Wigan Athletic were denied a deserved win after a terrible refereeing decision from Andre Mariner gifted Blackburn their second goal, but it was a last minute Yakubu penalty that earned the visitors a 3-3 draw.
The visitors took the lead through Yakubu in the opening minute but goals from Jordi Gomez and Gary Caldwell had Wigan in the ascendancy, before a misjudgement by Mariner allowed Blackburn to take a quick corner with Junior Hoilett heading in the Rovers' equaliser.
Albert Crusat looked to have won the game for the home side with a late strike but a last minute Yakubu penalty snatched Rovers a point.
After recent struggles Roberto Martinez made five changes to his starting line-up with Emmerson Boyce, Antolin Alcaraz, Ben Watson, Franco Di Santo and Hugo Rodallega all left out of the side with only Rodallega and Watson making the bench.
Ronnie Stam replaced Boyce at full back, captain Caldwell returned to the centre of defence in place of Alcaraz, James McCarthy was recalled in midfield with Gomez and Conor Sammon charged with supporting Victor Moses in attack.
Despite an impressive performance against Chelsea there were four changes to Blackburn’s starting line-up with Martin Olsson, Christopher Samba, Mauro Formica and Jason Lowe all out of the side and Michel Salgado, Scott Dann, Grant Hanley and David Dunn being brought back into the starting XI.
The visitors had the perfect start to the match with a goal inside the first minute after some terrible Wigan defending. A Paul Robinson goal kick was flicked on by Dunn and then Steven Nzonzi for Yakubu to latch onto.
The ball should have been easily cut out by Caldwell but the Scottish international misjudged its flight which allowed the Nigerian to race on and lob over goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi.
The home side couldn’t quite believe what had just happened but they settled down and began to get back into the game. Wigan thought they should have had a penalty in the sixth minute when Moses met a blocked Diame shot before being bundled over by Morten Gamst Pedersen, however referee Mariner thought otherwise.
Two minutes later all was forgotten as the Latics got themselves back onto level terms through Gomez. Dann failed to get power in his headed clearance and the loose ball fell to Gomez on the edge of the penalty area and the Spaniard fired the ball past Robinson at his near post.

The home side continued to dominate possession but it was Blackburn who had the next opportunity in the game as Pedersen crashed a free kick against the post in the 19th minute. The Dane whipped a low shot from 35 yards past the Wigan wall, and although it beat Al Habsi the woodwork denied him.
After half an hour the game was totally turned on its head as Wigan took the lead through Caldwell. The defender atoned for his error in the opening minute by putting his side into the lead but he was helped by some awful Blackburn defending. The Wigan captain was all alone 12 yards out from goal to head home a David Jones corner and send the DW crazy.
Blackburn’s troubles continued as the half came to an end but they were fortunate that Wigan, and particularly Moses were unable to punish them. The winger missed his first chance from a Stam pull-back as he lashed the ball over the bar from six yards. Five minutes later a good run and cross from Sammon found the winger but he headed over from three yards.
In the final minute of the half the home side came within inches of extending their lead through the lively Gomez. The forward picked the ball up 35 yards from goal and, with no defender closing him down, he unleashed a low drive that was just wide of Robinson’s left hand post.
The Latics went close to extending their lead two minutes into the second half as a Stam cross was headed to Jones but his left-foot volley from the edge of the area was just inches wide.
On the hour the game had its controversial moment as the visitors equalised through Hoilett. Rovers were awarded a corner and Yakubu went to touch the ball in the quadrant for a corner but didn't actually make contact. However Pedersen thought he had and dribbled into the area and fired a low cross that beat Al Habsi allowing Hoilett to head in from a yard.
Wigan resumed their dominance of possession following the equaliser but they were nearly caught on the break by Yakubu in the 72nd minute. After being played in behind the defence, he took the ball around Al Habsi but a last ditch tackle from Steve Gohouri denied him.
Five minutes later substitute Rodallega had a fantastic chance to put Wigan back in front but he was denied by Robinson. A low left wing cross from Jones was met by Rodallega but his close range volley was brilliantly saved by the opposition stopper.
After the earlier controversy Wigan got the goal they deserved through substitute Crusat in the 87th minute. Rodallega beat Dann in the air and headed the ball down to Crusat and his low shot crept underneath Robinson.
With the game in the sixth minute of injury time Blackburn were awarded a penalty as Jones collided with Robinson from a Rovers corner. Yakubu stepped up and scored for the visitors to earn them a point.
