Aston Villa - Norwich City Preview: Canaries look for fourth ever win at home of the Midlands side

The visitors will want to keep their first clean sheet of the season whilst Alex McLeish's men will hope to change their reputation as draw specialists having tied six matches

Hutton, Collins, Dunne, Warnock
Herd, Petrov
N'Zogbia, Heskey, Agbonlahor

Naughton, Martin, Barnett, Tierney
Bennett, Fox, Johnson, Pilkington
Jermaine Jenas may finally make his way into the Villa squad for the first time this season, but his inclusion would almost certainly be on the bench with several midfielders with much more first-team action under their belts waiting on the sidelines for a place in the starting XI.

Norwich could put club captain Grant Holt back in to the side after his heroics coming on from the bench in their recent matches, but it is unlikely Paul Lambert will make any other changes to his side.

  • Norwich have won just one of their five away matches this season – a 2-1 win at Bolton Wanderers
  • The Canaries have to go back to May 2005 for their last Premier League clean sheet – a 1-0 win over Birmingham City in their penultimate game of the season
  • The last meeting between these two sides was in 2005 at Villa Park, with Aston Villa triumphing 3-0 thanks to goals from Liam Ridgewell, Lee Hendrie and Nolberto Solano
  • Both teams have played 24 league matches at each other’s grounds: Norwich have 12 wins to Villa’s four at home and the Villans have 15 wins to the Canaries have three at Villa Park
  • Norwich’s last away win at Villa came in November 1992 and cemented their position at the top of the Premier League, a place where they stayed until January the year after. They finished third that season, two points behind second-placed Villa despite having a goal difference of -4
  • Norwich have conceded five penalties which is most in the league with Grant Holt’s goal last week the only one they have received
  • Before their comeback against Blackburn Rovers, Norwich’s latest goal in the league this season had come in the 63rd minute. They have conceded five goals in the last 10 minutes of matches. Last season they scored 12 goals in the 90th minute or later
  • Villa have had the fewest shots on goal (97) and the second fewest on target (44) which is just one less than Stoke City
  • Norwich have received just 11 yellow cards, the fewest in the league, but have had two players sent off

The England striker has missed some glorious chances in front of goal in recent weeks. The first against West Brom mattered little as he scored from the penalty spot soon after, but his profligacy against Sunderland came back to haunt him against his former side.

His manager defended him after the match, but a tally of three goals by November is less than he is used to.

S. Morison

Consigned to the substitute’s bench, Holt has come on to rescue his side two weeks running. Steve Morison has done well as a lone striker, but Paul Lambert must be tempted to give his captain a start.

Regardless, Holt is almost certain to spend some time on the pitch and after his previous cameos, and even if he doesn't start, all eyes will be on the former Nottingham Forest man, especially those of Villa’s defenders.

Editor's Prediction

Norwich have shown themselves to be an unpredictable team, capable of scoring and conceding at any time. They will find it harder to break down a Villa side who can boast Dunne and Collins at the back than Blackburn last week, and their inability to keep a clean sheet so far makes them too suspect at the defensively.
