Two goals from Rafael van der Vaart condemned Blackburn to another home defeat as Tottenham recorded a 2-1 victory at Ewood Park on Sunday, which leaves the pressure mounting on Rovers boss Steve Kean.
Despite a strong performance from the home side, they lacked quality in front of goal and were punished by two excellent strikes from Spurs’ Dutch forward. Mauro Formica had got his side back into the game before Van der Vaart struck to seal the points for the visitors.
Under pressure Blackburn boss Kean made three changes to the side that drew with QPR, with Michel Salgado, Radosav Petrovic and Scott Dann all dropping out of the team and Simon Vuckevic, Mauro Formica and Morten Gamst Pedersen coming into the side.
Aaron Lennon made his return in the league in place of Jake Livermore after coming through the midweek win over Rubin Kazan, and Sebastien Bassong came in for Ledley King, who was ruled out with his troublesome knees.
On a cold and blustery day in Lancashire, in the fifth minute Givet mistimed a jump allowing Emmanuel Adebayor to chest the ball down and charge at the Rovers goal. Confronted by Christopher Samba, he rolled a low cross towards Bale on the far side of the penalty area but a last ditch sliding tackle from Jason Lowe cleared the danger. Rovers broke quickly on the counterattack with Hoilett, and his mazy run got him into a great position but he chose to pass when a shot looked the better option.
Two minutes later Blackburn had another excellent chance, and again it was Hoilett causing trouble for the Spurs defence. From a more central position the winger danced past Parker but fired over from the edge of the penalty area under pressure from Younes Kaboul.
Despite Blackburn creating some good chances, it was the visitors who opened the scoring in the 14th minute through Van der Vaart. Adebayor held possession up on the right wing and waited for Kyle Walker to surge passed him on the overlap. The young full-back received the pass and flew past Givet before rolling the ball back to Van der Vaart, who calmly side-footed the ball into the back of the net from 10 yards.
Minutes later they could have doubled their lead, this time breaking down the left wing with Bale, who rolled a low cross into the penalty area for Adebayor, but Olsson got in front of the striker and very nearly caught Robinson off guard as he deflected the cross goalwards, but the keeper was able to tip it over the bar.
Bale was starting to become a real influence in the game and eight minutes later another low cross found Adebayor, but the striker's shot was well saved by Robinson.
Spurs had been dominating the game but in the 27th minute the hosts got themselves back into it through Formica. Pedersen sent a free kick into the penalty area where Samba beat Parker and Kaboul in the air and the loose ball dropped to the Argentine, who blasted it into the net from 10 yards.
That goal ignited the crowd at Ewood Park but the team were still struggling to contain the impressive Spurs midfield, and eight minutes later Luka Modric showed just why he is so highly thought of in the game. The Croatian picked the ball up inside the Blackburn half and effortlessly ran away from Pedersen and Formica, but his powerful shot was turned behind by Robinson.
However, the confidence was slowly returning to the Blackburn side and a wonderful cross-field pass from Pedersen found the unmarked Hoilett on the left wing. He ran at Walker before cutting inside him and firing at goal but his shot was parried away by Friedel.
The final chance of the half fell to the hosts, with another free kick from Pedersen finding Samba, who then beat Kaboul in the air but his header dropped just wide of the goal.
Spurs began the second half in confident mood and were twice very close to going ahead in the 52nd minute through Modric and Bale. The Croatian received a pass on the edge of the penalty area but his powerful shot was pushed away by Robinson. The loose ball was collected by Lennon but Bale missed the ball from the winger's cut-back.
Seconds later, Van der Vaart doubled his tally and gave his side the lead again with a sublime finish from the edge of the area. Benoit Assou-Ekotto attacked Lowe down the left wing before getting a little bit of luck as the ball bounced to Van der Vaart, and the Dutchman managed to side-foot the ball into the net without even breaking his stride.
The introduction of Yakubu in the 69th minute seemed to really awaken Blackburn, and the Nigerian had three good chances to get his side back into the game. The first came from a low cross but he managed to put his shot wide of the post, before then having two good headed opportunities, but he was unable to test Friedel in the Spurs goal as the visitors sealed the three points.
