West Brom 2-0 Wolves: Chris Brunt & Peter Odemwingie strikes win derby to condemn rivals to fifth straight defeat
The home side proved clinical in a fiery, yet fairly-played, match with both sides having chances to score as Roy Hodgson's men secured their first home win of the season

Goals from Chris Brunt and Peter Odemwingie gave West Brom their first home win of the season as they defeated rivals Wolves 2-0 at The Hawthorns.
Brunt struck after just eight minutes, getting on the end of a cross from debutant Billy Jones to slam home in what was an encouraging performance from the Baggies, before Odemwingie sealed the win in the second half.
The hosts could have ran out more comfortable winners had Christophe Berra, who had already been booked, been shown a second yellow card or a straight red having fouled Shane Long as last man early into the second half.
However, Wolves also looked dangerous going forward and both Kevin Doyle and Roger Johnson will feel like they could have equalised for the away side.
As it is, the result condemns Wolves to a fifth straight defeat and leaves West Brom, for the time being, in 11th place.
Roy Hodgson rang the changes for the match, replacing Odemwingie, who had a foot injury, with Somen Tchoyi up front and bringing in Paul Scharner and Jerome Thomas for Graham Dorrans and James Morrison in midfield. Jones, meanwhile, made his debut at left-back in place of Nicky Shorey, after receiving words of praise from his manager during the week.
Mick McCarthy was forced to make a change with top scorer Steven Fletcher suffering a calf injury in training, and with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake having only played 77 minutes of reserve team football since August, he brought Nenad Milijas into midfield with Adam Hammill replacing Stephen Hunt on the right.
As expected, there was a ferocious tempo to the early stages of the match, with both sides attacking with plenty of verve.
The first effort on goal came from the visitors after hesitancy from Jones allowed Hammill to fire a shot across goal, but Ben Foster was alert enough to tip the ball wide of his post.
West Brom’s last four goals have come in the opening five minutes of matches and they only had to wait a few extra minutes in this match to take the lead.
Youssouf Mulumbu thread a lovely ball down the left for Jones to run on to and his cut-back was met by Brunt running in to slam past Wayne Hennessey, giving the keeper no chance.
The goal was the Baggies’ second at home all season and was a touch harsh on Wolves after their bright start to the game.
However, they so nearly equalised a few minutes later after a run down the left from Matt Jarvis. His cross was intercepted by Mulumbu running back, but the ball fell for Milijas to hit a shot at goal. And when Foster could only parry his shot straight to Doyle a few yards out it looked likely that he would level the scores, but Jonas Olsson made a great block to deny the Irishman.
At the other end it was the turn of Stephen Ward to make a great last ditch tackle, this time on Shane Long, who was moving on to the end of a Thomas cross and looking almost certain to score his fourth goal of the season.
Wolves felt that they should have had a penalty when Hammill’s shot from the right hit Jones nearby, but the clearance found Long down the left and he burst past Johnson before sending the ball back across goal, this time for Scharner, but he shot wide of the far post under pressure from Henry tracking back.
The away side went into the break 1-0 down, which was an improvement having been losing by two goals during their last three matches, whilst West Brom went into the match having not scored a second-half goal.
However, they were unfortunate not to be a man up soon after the break. Berra had been booked for a mis-timed lunge on Long in the first half and after he was beaten to a long ball by the Irishman he slid in and took out the man again.
But this time, referee Chris Foy, who in his last visit to the Hawthorns failed to send off Gary Neville, deemed Berra had played the ball, much to the annoyance of Long who would have been through on goal.
Mulumbu then had another chance to double West Brom’s lead, but he shot wildly over from 20 yards after Tchoyi’s shot had rebounded to him.
Having seen his side start the second half the worse, McCarthy brought on Ebanks-Blake for Milijas with 55 minutes on the clock, and the change nearly paid dividends immediately when he set up Doyle but his shot crept wide of Foster’s right-hand post.
The best chance of the second half then fell for Johnson, who had gotten himself forward to meet a Jarvis cross, but he headed wide having out-jumped Jones at the far post.
In an increasingly end-to-end game, Thomas had the next chance to score, but having weaved himself into the box he could only shoot straight at Hennessey.
Odemwingie was introduced for Tchoyi to a great reception from the home crowd after a difficult week and he repaid the thanks almost immediately. Scharner cut in from the left and back-heeled the ball to the Nigerian, who curled his effort past Hennessey and into the far corner of the net.
Odemwingie then had another chance from a similar position but this time he blasted his shot over as the hosts looked to kill the contest.
Wolves never looked like coming back into the match and with the crowd in a boisterous mood, they played out the final 10 minutes in relative comfort to give Hodgson his first ever win over Mick McCarthy and overtake their rivals for the first time this season.
