Old Trafford — Manchester
Referee: P. Dowd
Attendance: 75455
Player Ratings: Manchester United 3-1 Chelsea
Goals from Chris Smalling, Nani and Wayne Rooney sealed the win for Sir Alex Ferguson's side, with Fernando Torres grabbing a consolation before missing an open goal late on
By Greg Stobart at Old Trafford
The under pressure Spaniard looked shaky at times but made a superb stop in the first half to deny Ramires from close range.
The Frenchman linked up well with Young as he joined the attack at every opportunity. Defended strongly and skilfully against Sturridge.
Superb run forward in the build-up to United's third goal and generally excellent in his anticipation and tackling. Caught out by Torres' movement for Chelsea's goal.
Calm and composed, he mopped up at the back and used the ball well.
Broke the deadlock in the eighth minute with a superb leap and header to divert in Young's free kick. Dominant in the air until being replaced in the 62nd minute due to injury.
Boisterous and energetic in midfield as he demanded the ball and tried to get the hosts' quick passing game going. Passing lacked some of his usual penetration and he had a couple of sloppy moments, not least when he gifted the ball to Torres.
The Portuguese winger was in fine form and it was reflected by his superb strike from 25 yards after he cut in from the right side. Beat Cole all afternoon with his trickery and passing and also won United's penalty moments after hitting the bar from the edge of the box.
Produced an excellent delivery for Smalling to head home the opener and stretched the play by hugging the left touchline.
The Scot was handed his first start of the season in the Premier League and he produced a capable display. Not back to his best but full of running and used the ball efficiently.
Continued his incredible start to the season by slotting home his ninth goal of the campaign on the stroke of half-time but a bizarre slip meant he didn't add to it from the penalty spot after the break. Linked up United's play on the counter-attack and played some delightful passes to the wide men.
The Mexican's movement up front was always a threat and stretched the game but he wasn't at his sharpest in the penalty box. Afternoon ended in the 79th minute after a dangerous challenge by Cole.
Replaced Anderson in the 62nd minute. Tidy on the ball but lacked imagination with his passing.
Composed performance at right-back after replacing Smalling in the 62nd minute.
Played the final 11 minutes as a replacement for Hernandez and missed a glorious late chance, underhitting his shot and seeing it cleared off the line by Cole.
The Chelsea goalkeeper picked the ball out of the net three times but had surprisingly little else to do. Competent when needed and could do nothing about the goals.
Strong up against Hernandez but perhaps could have got tighter to Rooney when the United striker dropped deep.
The England left-back had a torrid time as he was continually beaten by Nani and had no answer for the United winger. Booked for a reckless late lunge on Hernandez which should have been a red card and a penalty. Cleared Berbatov's effort off the line in added time.
Had a difficult time defending against Young and conceded a penalty with a reckless lunge through the back of Nani. Made a couple of good runs forward and slipped in a lovely pass to Torres - but the Spaniard couldn't turn the ball into an empty net.
The Chelsea captain was generally alert at the heart of the Blues defence but lost Smalling and misjudged the ball ahead of Smalling's opener.
Dreadful miss on the stretch from close range when Chelsea were 1-0 down could have been the turning point of the game. Kept going and his athleticism was superb when he drove Chelsea forward.
Played some neat passes in the first half but was ponderous and seemed well off the pace of the game. Will not be pleased that he was substituted at half-time.
Sat as a deep-lying playmaker but hardly offered any protection for the back four. Would be better off playing in a more advanced role, as he proved with an improvised pass to Lampard in the first half.
What a strange afternoon for the £50 million striker. All the talk will be about his horrendous miss of an open goal in the second half. It was quite incredible that he failed to score after he ghosted past the goalkeeper in a manner reminiscent of his best days at Liverpool. Scored within a minute of the second half with an excellent run and finish but will he be able to live down that miss?
Impressive performance from the Spaniard as he drifted into space and played clever passes in the final third. Drifted out of the game in the second half.
The young forward looked almost too eager to impress as he snatched at early chances and lacked composure when under pressure. Replaced by Lukaku in the 68th minute.
Came on for Meireles 11 minutes from time but had little impact.
Replaced Sturridge in the 68th minute and first involvement was a sharp run across the near post. The Belgian teenager is physically impressive but didn't have much of an impact.
Replaced Lampard at the break and made an immediate impact with a superb pass to create Torres' goal. Never had a real sight on the United goal.
