Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers played out a goalless draw in the Midlands derby as both sides continued their unbeaten starts in the Premier League.
The home side's boss Alex McLeish received a boost ahead of this game as both Gabriel Agbonlahor and Emile Heskey were fit for this encounter, after having suffered injuries in the previous game against Blackburn Rovers. But the former Birmingham City boss made one change to his line-up by bringing in Chris Herd in place of Luke Young, as the latter has left the club to join Queens Park Rangers.
After having beaten Fulham, Mick McCarthy fielded the same line-up for the third consecutive league game. But Sam Vokes replaced Sylvan Ebanks-Blake on the bench, as the former Plymouth Argyle striker was out due to a knee injury sustained against Northampton Town in the League Cup.
The match began with striker Emile Heskey giving away a free-kick in under two minutes due to handball. It slowly set the tone for the visitors as it was only minutes later that some excellent play by winger Stephen Hunt beat Stiliyan Petrov to spread it to Kevin Doyle, who eventually earned a corner. But unfortunately for the travellers, nothing came of it.
Amid some good pressure from McCarthy's men, Fabian Delph got himself booked for a strong challenge on Matt Jarvis. The 25-year-old winger took the free kick and sent it towards the back post, but goalkeeper Shay Given tipped it over the bar to give away a corner. But yet again, nothing came of the set play.
Villa finally got a chance when Darren Bent fed the ball to Petrov, who managed to take a shot. But his strike went well wide of the target. A little later, Herd effectively ran into the goalpost, a nasty collision, leaving the player in need of some treatment but he was eventually able to continue.
Charles N'Zogbia was impressing at times but his rare shot on goal was effectively the story of the first half as it lacked direction and went well wide.
About 30 minutes in, Delph and Bent produced some good link-up play that saw the hosts look threatening, but that was put to an end as Heskey produced a bad first touch. But it set the tempo as the visiting side were subject to a small period of pressure. Even so, no goals were scored as the man in charge brought the first period of play to an end.
Villa began the second-half brightly, with Agbonlahor managing to get in a shot that produced a good save from Wayne Hennessey. No one from the home team was able to get to the ball quickly enough to put it into the back of the net, however, and Wolves managed to clear.

The fans at Villa Park found their voice after what was a dreary first half and the team responded by pushing hard to break the deadlock.
In the meantime, Wolves were trying to play some possession football to slow down the tempo and give themselves a brief respite from the pressure. It did not work initially, as Agbonlahor and Co. continued to work away in search of the opener.
But in due course, the visitors saw off the difficult period and managed to get themselves back into the game. Kevin Doyle and Jamie O'Hara were well on their way to creating a scoring chance, when Stephen Warnock stepped in and put an end to a potentially dangerous situation. He then proceeded to find Agbonlahor, but the hitman was denied moving further ahead by Richard Stearman, who was having a good day.
With around than 20 minutes to go, N'Zogbia had a chance to give his side the lead as he was left unmarked in the area, but his shot went wide and the game remained level.
Bent was looking threatening as he tried to send a ball across goal, but Hennessey was quick to parry with Agbonlahor waiting to pounce.
With time ticking away, McLeish brought on Marc Albrighton in place of Delph, but it made no difference to the scoreline as the game eventually ended in a draw. Villa and Wolves walked away with a point apiece, their unbeaten records intact, and with the visitors, for a few hours at least, top of the Premier League table.
