Victor Moses was sublime for the hosts while Ali Al-Habsi's costly error left Roberto Martinez's men reeling and the Canaries singing

    Ali Al Habsi

The Oman international deservedly won Wigan’s Player of the Season Award and having signed from Bolton on a permanent deal over summer is expected to make the spot his own but won't have helped his chances with a terrible spill to concede the lead just before half-time.

    Emmerson Boyce

Worked hard to suppress the dangerous Andrew Surman down the Norwich left and was powerful in the air. A no-nonsense opening day performance.

    Gary Caldwell

The Latics skipper took charge at the back and dealt well with the physically imposing Grant Holt and was rarely on the back foot. Read the game superbly for the Latics.

    Adrain Lopez

Received a nasty blow to the head on early on and missed 10 minutes of the first-half to receive strapping but the experienced Spaniard returned and was solid as a rock alongside Caldwell. A fine performance.

    Maynor Figueroa

Showed remarkable pace down the left flank, supporting Victor Moses with overlaps on a number of occasions. Was never caught out of position.

    Jordi Gómez

Moved inside from the right to bolster the Latics attack and looked a class above many of those around him on the ball. Grew frustrated with a lack of mobility from those around him and was substituted for Rodallega.

  • James McCarthy

    James McCarthy

Worked very well alongside Ben Watson, holding the ball up as the hosts broke rapidly. Tired a little as the game progressed but kept up with play to help his side.

  • Mohamed Diame

    Mohamed Diame

Tenacious as ever in midfield, the French-born Senegal international started well, getting in the faces of the Canaries players and proving difficult to knock off the ball. Gave the visitors no space at all. Superb.

  • Ben Watson

    Ben Watson

Oozed class in the middle of the park, retaining possession superbly and never looking flustered on the ball. Took his penalty superbly to give Wigan the lead and nearly secured a late winner with a superb effort against the post.

Victor Moses Top of the Match

Will be expected to step up and provide an attacking threat following the departure of Charles N’Zogbia and looked like a more than able replacement on this showing. Absolutely terrorised Martin down the left channel, cutting in dangerously.

  • Franco Di Santo

    3.50

    Franco Di Santo

Was brought down by a nasty David Fox challenge after only 30 seconds but returned to the pitch full of vigour. Was a menace to the Norwich defence throughout and was eventually brought down in the box having dispossessed Ritchie De Laet to earn his side their opening penalty. Unlucky not to see his 49th minute header go wide. Replaced shortly after.

    Conor Sammon

Came on for the impressive Di Santo and stretched the play well as Wigan chased the game, opening up space for Rodallega to run into from the left.

  • Hugo Rodallega

    Hugo Rodallega

Brought on shortly after half-time and took control of the left. Was a little rusty on the ball and struggled to get the ball to feet with any consistency. Could have given his side the lead from 20 yards out but saw his effort saved well by Ruddy.

  • John Ruddy

    John Ruddy

The former Everton man will be expecting a busy season in the Premier League over the next 10 months but he performed valiantly under pressure at the DW Stadium. Could do nothing about Ben Watson's penalty and pulled out a couple of fine stops.

  • Zak Whitbread

    Zak Whitbread

Was very solid at the back, suppressing the forward runs of the advancing Wigan midfield. Came unstuck in the second half as Moses moved to the left-hand side to trouble Marc Tierney but still an impressive opening day effort.

  • Russell Martin

    Russell Martin

Was a threat down the right-hand side from the off, delivering a number of good balls into the path of Grant Holt but struggled to contain the vibrant Moses at the back.

  • Ritchie De Laet

Ritchie De Laet Flop of the Match

The Belgian’s career has stalled somewhat since he moved to Manchester United in 2009 but now on a fourth loan-spell since he moved to Old Trafford, he’ll be hoping that this is the year that he truly kicks on. However, this was a performance full of nerves and he gave away the penalty that led to the Latics' opener after dwelling on the ball.

  • Marc Tierney

    Marc Tierney

Stuck to his task and rarely ventured forward to support the isolated Surman. Cool as you like at the back but could have shown a little more willing going forward.

    Andrew Surman

Never really got a chance to impress down the left for Lambert's side and was forced in-field for the visitors as his took control of the ball in the middle of the park

  • Wesley Hoolahan

    Wesley Hoolahan

The creative fulcrum of this Norwich side, Hoolahan was constantly pestered by Diame throughout the clash but broke through at the perfect moment to equalise for the visitors having wasted an earlier chance.

Worked hard in an attempt to help out the struggling Russell Martin but had trouble in containing the sublime Victor Moses down the channel.

    David Fox

Was booked after only 30 seconds for a poor challenge on Franco Di Santo. However, he didn't let the early caution affect his commitment to the cause and he delivered a superb sliding tackle only minutes later to quell a Wigan break.

  • Grant Holt

    Grant Holt

The Norwich skipper struggled to escape the breaches of Gary Caldwell and Adrian Lopez for much of the clash but was a good target for the likes of Russell Martin and Andrew Surman.

    Steve Morison

The summer signing from Millwall displaced Simeon Jackson as partner to skipper Grant Holt up front and didn’t look out of place in his first Premier League game, working the lines and looking to make gaps in the hosts' back-line.

Replaced Whitbread with 20 minutes remaining and dealt well with the powerful Rodallega, meeting a number of high balls with consummate ease.

Came on with a quarter of an hour to go but had little impact, looking isolated down the right-wing. Attempted a couple of crosses but they were both over-hit .
