USA 0-4 Spain: Goals from Cazorla, Negredo and Torres provide easy win for World Champions

Del Bosque’s side continue their fine form with a comprehensive victory over the USA thanks to three first half strikes

By Daniel Quinton-Navarro

Spain recorded an emphatic 4-0 victory over the USA thanks to a blistering first half appearance.

A Santiago Cazorla brace, either side of Alvaro Negredo’s fine strike in the opening 45 minutes dispelled any repeat of the American’s heroics in the semi-finals for the Confederations Cup.

Fernando Torres completed the scoring in the second half, leaving the USA in turmoil ahead of the Gold Cup tournament.

Spain had the better of the opening exchanges and they nearly opened the scoring when Alvaro Negredo clipped the underside of the bar with a delightful lob.

The woodwork was rattled soon after when David Villa curled a shot against the upright following a devastating counter attack.

Spain took a deserved led after 28 minutes following a wonderful passing move climaxing in David Silva squaring the ball to Santiago Cazorla who tucked the ball inside the near post.

Negredo doubled the Spaniard’s lead with a fine finish after Xabi Alonso’s chipped pass put the Sevilla man clean through.

Spain launched another counter as David Silva delivered a low cross which found Cazorla coming in from deep to slide the ball beyond Tim Howard.

In contrast to Spain’s supremacy, America’s only chance came from Gerard Pique’s mistake allowing Robbie Rogers a site of goal but the Columbus Crew player couldn’t hit the target.

Half-time brought about the numerous substitutions as the USA replaced five players in preparation for their Gold Cup tie against Canada, to Spain’s three.

America began to threaten Jose Reina’s goal in the second half; but Chris Wondolowski was unable to reach a high cross into the area and Clint Dempsey dragged a shot wide of the target ten minutes into the second half.

Spain were celebrating a fourth goal as substitutes Borja Valero and Torres combined with the Chelsea man taking the ball in his stride and poking it beyond Tim Howard.

The remainder of the game closed out with neither side pushing forward with the USA retaining energy for the Gold Cup.

The Americans face Canada in their opening match on Wednesday, whilst Spain return to the friendly format against Venezuela.
