Panama earned a surprise 2-1 victory over the USA in Saturday's Gold Cup Group C match. Unintimidated by the atmosphere in Tampa, La Marea Roja came out strong and held off a late surge from the USA as they earned three points.
Panama had a dream opening half and took a two-goal lead into the interval. In the 19th minute, Luis Tejada was first to a loose ball inside the six-yard box, and tapped home from close range. Later in the half, Blas Perez won a penalty from Tim Ream, and Gabriel Gomez fired home Panama's second goal from the penalty spot.
The United States looked better in the second half, and were rewarded for their better play in the 68th minute. Following a free kick Michael Bradley nodded the ball into the path of Clarence Goodson, who emphaticaly headed home to pull a goal back for the USA.
The Stars and Stripes pushed for a late equaliser, but La Marea Roja were firm in their defence around the penalty area, and benefited from a bit of luck as Chris Wondolowski missed a sitter and Michael Bradley had a late effort sail narrowly wide of the right post.
The result sees Panama go three points clear of the USA and Canada in Group C, ahead of the final round of the group stage. La Marea Roja next face Canada, while the Stars and Stripes wil take on Guadeloupe.
