Ivan Klasnic struck his second FA Cup winner in a week as Bolton beat Fulham 1-0 at Craven Cottage to advance to the quarter-finals of the competition where they will play Birmingham City.

Fulham came out of the blocks quickest and had the first opening of the game when Clint Dempsey flicked on a long ball which Moussa Dembele chased onto before firing a left footed shot at goal which was well saved by Adam Bogdan.

The visitors responded to the early pressure exerted on them and Stuart Holden should have done better when he struck the ball wide of Mark Schwarzer’s goal after receiving the ball from a Klasnic knockdown just outside the area.

Bolton took the lead in the 19th minute through Klasnic when he capitalised on a miscued clearance from Hangeland and volleyed past Schwarzer with his left foot into the bottom corner of the net, giving the Fulham keeper no chance.

The home side tried to react to going behind and went close from a Danny Murphy corner but Hangeland could not beat Bogdan with his header, and the Hungarina U21 international made a good save from the big Norwegian.

It could have got worse for Fulham when Martin Petrov received the ball on the left and ran at the defence; he then fizzed a left footed cross into the six yard box and Schwarzer did well to get the ball before the lurking Davies, who was looking to pounce on anything loose in the area.

Fulham were struggling to break a resolute Wanderers defence but Dempsey managed to get free 20 yards outside the area. His effort, however, flew just wide of the post although it was never troubling Bogdan, who looked comfortable in between the sticks replacing usual Wanderers keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.

The hosts started the second half as they had started the first with a quick tempo. Dembele brought the crowd to life with a jinking run through the Bolton defence but his effort flew way off target.

The Belgian repeated the feat moments later and this time he tested the Trotters keeper from just outside the box but Bogdan got down well to his right to make a comfortable save.

Fulham continued to exert pressure on the away side and could have got an equaliser had anyone got on the end of Zoltan Gera’s pinpoint cross which flew across the face of the goal, but Paul Robinson was able to clear the ball unchallenged.

The game became more open as Mark Hughes’ side pushed for a leveller but this left them open at the back and they were fortunate that Fabrice Muamba’s effort went the wrong the side of the post after the England U21 International unleashed a rocket at the Fulham goal.

Bolton should have got a second after a break away from a Fulham free kick when Klasnic found Petrov. The former Manchester City player raced down the left and crossed for Davies, but the striker's first touch let him down six yards from goal, allowing Baird to nip in and clear the ball out for a corner.

Coyle’s side were getting closer and closer to another goal. Schwarzer produced a magnificent save to deny Klasnic his second goal of the afternoon diving to his right to parry away the striker’s volley which looked to be creeping in the bottom corner.

Schwarzer had to be at his best again just minutes later to deny Petrov, after the winger came in from the flank unmarked and rifled a stinging effort towards goal which the Australian beat behind for a corner.

Fulham turned up the heat on the Trotters but were unable to carve out any clear openings due to the brilliance of the defending by the visitors, particularly from Gary Cahill and David Wheater, who snuffed out any danger that threatened Bogdan’s goal.

The hosts came ever nearer to getting an equaliser with Bobby Zamora coming close to getting his side level on two occasions, but the home side still could not find the net on one of those days for Mark Hughes’ side.
