Player Ratings: Germany 1-1 Italy

By Clark Whitney

  • Manuel Neuer

    Manuel Neuer

Hardly tested for most of the match, but was typically brilliant when called upon. Distributed the ball with class, and made excellent saves from De Rossi and Borriello. Also stopped Rossi's shot, but the striker took the rebound and netted the equaliser. Neuer made only one mistake as he weakly punched a cross, but he also managed to save his team from what would have been a humiliating defeat.

  • Holger Badstuber

    3.00

    Holger Badstuber

Controversially granted a start after his poor performance against Koeln, and his display left something to be desired. Was a bit too aggressive at times, and conceded three free kicks. In his defence, the Bayern man did read the game well and kept in position.

  • Per Mertesacker
    4
    5
    3.00

    Per Mertesacker

Cleaner and just as sturdy as his partner in defence, but the Bremen man allowed Rossi a bit too much space as the Italian equalised. Cannot be fully at fault for the equaliser, however; Rossi would have been offside had the entire German defence held its line.

  • Philipp Lahm
    12
    5
    3.00

    Philipp Lahm

Beaten once by Chiellini, but was otherwise very impressive. In just 64 minutes, the captain had an amazing 80 touches. In defence, he was rarely troubled, and going forward, Lahm had all the technique and creativity of an attacking midfielder. His ball to Mueller set events in motion for a rather spectacular goal.

  • Dennis Aogo
    4
    5
    3.00

    Dennis Aogo

The Hamburg man justified his inclusion in Loew's squad ahead of Marcel Schmelzer. Aogo tirelessly ran up and down the left flank, took care of the ball, and was strong at the back as well. His one mistake was being caught out of position late in the first half, but in that instance he recovered and made a good block, albeit with suspicion of hand ball.

  • Lukas Podolski
    6
    10
    2.50

    Lukas Podolski

Started the game well, but faded when it seemed that Germany were content to hold onto their lead. Was conspicuously missing as his team pushed for a late winner. His only contribution late in the game was to take the ball away from Oezil when the playmaker was lining up a shot.

  • Bastian Schweinsteiger
    7
    7
    2.50

    Bastian Schweinsteiger

Statistically brilliant: back in his favoured defensive role, he made 126 touches and completed 86 of 94 attempted passes. Schweinsteiger was like a terrier to the ball in the first half...and then faded away. After the break, he didn't have the same drive as he had before, and Germany struggled. The DFB-Elf clearly needed more in the engine room in order to hold onto their narrow lead.

  • Mesut Özil
    25
    10
    3.50

Mesut Özil Top of the Match

Ran and ran and ran, and accordingly, was always involved. Though he was in an attacking midfield role, the Real Madrid man somehow managed 114 touches and 82 completed passes. He also set up seven shots - one was the gorgeous back heel that catalysed the opener, and at least one or two more should have resulted in goals.

  • Sami Khedira
    5
    6
    3.00

    Sami Khedira

Like Schweinsteiger, the Real Madrid man ran tirelessly in the first half, and chased down his opponents whenever they looked like breaking forward. And then, he stopped trying so hard. He earns extra points for getting forward late; the former Stuttgart midfielder nearly netted the winner, but had his effort denied by a good save.

  • Thomas Müller
    9
    6
    3.00

    Thomas Müller

When he plays, Germany look so much better. Mueller covered a tremendous amount of ground in the first half, and his interplay with Oezil created Klose's goal. Had he stayed on for the final 45 minutes, Germany probably would have won.

  • Miroslav Klose
    9
    5
    3.00

    Miroslav Klose

Took his goal well and deserved another, but had his shot saved by Buffon. As usual, the 'semi-retired' Bayern man put on a good performance for country. He worked hard, and made all the runs necessary to confuse the Italian defence.

Substitutions

  • Mats Hummels
    3
    5
    0.00

    Mats Hummels

Replaced Badstuber for the final 26 minutes and was rather unfortunate to be involved in playing Rossi onside ahead of the equaliser. The Dortmund man surely deserves a bit more time to prove himself on the international level.

  • Jerome Boateng
    4
    8
    2.50

    Jerome Boateng

The Manchester City man replaced Lahm for the final 26 minutes and played well without doing anything spectacular. Boateng is good as a secondary option on the flank, but his inability to replicate Lahm's attacking quality showed, especially when Germany started pushing for a winner.

  • Mario Götze
    2
    6
    2.50

    Mario Götze

Replaced Mueller at half-time, but really had no place in the team that played. Goetze is a #10, and cannot take on the wide role that Mueller and Podolski play in Loew's set-up. He linked well with Oezil, but was not the primary ball-player in the attacking third, and had no striker to set up.

  • Kevin Großkreutz
    2
    4
    0.00

    Kevin Großkreutz

Featured as a late substitute and made no mistakes, but was unable to find his way into a dangerous position. Took good shot from distance, but was unable to get his foot around the ball to curl it in.

  • Gianluigi Buffon
    12
    2
    3.00

    Gianluigi Buffon

Gave Italy a chance to take something from the match, and Rossi took it. Nearly kept out Klose's goal, and saved the German moments later when he was through on goal. Also denied Khedira late in the match with a well-placed leg.

  • Giorgio Chiellini
    8
    2
    3.00

    Giorgio Chiellini

His physicality caused trouble for Mueller, but the Juve man also managed to get forward quite well. As a left-back, he got behind Lahm once and nearly earned an assist following a good cross to De Rossi.

  • Leonardo Bonucci
    3
    6
    2.50

    Leonardo Bonucci

Cannot be blamed for the opener, which was well taken. Occasionally looked suspect, but made no mistakes in the second half, albeit under minimal pressure.

  • Andrea Ranocchia
    3
    5
    2.00

    Andrea Ranocchia

Won eight of his 11 challenges, and was quite neat at the back for the vast majority of the match. However, the Inter man made a woeful mistake and nearly cost his team the match shortly after the opener when he allowed Klose to peel away far too easily.

  • Mattia Cassani
    1
    6
    2.00

    Mattia Cassani

Not quite up to par with Chiellini during his time on the pitch, and it was his side that was most aggressively attacked by the Germans. Might have done better as the rest of his team improved in the second half, but replaced in the 53rd minute after picking up a knock.

  • Daniele De Rossi
    11
    3
    3.00

    Daniele De Rossi

Struggled in the opening half hour as Italy were overrun in midfield, but improved thereafter. Fired a blistering volley that forced a fine save on 37 minutes, and his forward movement in the second half caused trouble for the German midfield. Statistically the best Italian midfielder, with 79 touches at 48 completed passes out of 61 attempts.

  • Thiago Motta
    2
    9
    0.00

Thiago Motta Flop of the Match

Miles behind the German midfielders, especially in the first 30 minutes. Allowed Mueller in for the opener, booked for a clumsy challenge, and conceded possession far too easily. Hooked on 63 minutes.

  • Riccardo Montolivo
    3
    6
    2.00

    Riccardo Montolivo

Improved in the second half, but the Fiorentina man brought his club form with him to tonight's match. His passing was accurate, if unimaginative, but the 26-year old was far too slow to the ball.

  • Stefano Mauri
    2
    7
    2.50

    Stefano Mauri

Made a couple good one-on-one moves, and runs, but struggled to produce anything decisive. Took far too long to play the ball when he was free from Aogo, and only had himself to blame when a penalty was not given for hand ball. Failed to set up or take a single shot.

  • Antonio Cassano
    11
    4
    3.50

    Antonio Cassano

Quite comfortably his team's most dangerous attacker in the first half. Played a couple excellent balls within the first ten minutes, and came close to drawing a penalty as he chased down the ball late in the first half. His performance did not deserve a substitution at half-time.

  • Giampaolo Pazzini
    1
    6
    2.50

    Giampaolo Pazzini

Only minimally involved in the first half, but was largely starved of service from an underachieving midfield. Combined well once with Cassano, but was rather anonymous otherwise, and was replaced at half-time.

Substitutions

  • Domenico Criscito

    Domenico Criscito

Came on as a late substitute, but got heavily involved and played a fine ball to Rossi ahead of the equaliser.

  • Christian Maggio
    3
    1
    2.50

    Christian Maggio

Replaced Cassani and was immediately put under pressure by Aogo, but made a fine challenge to concede a corner. The right-back played well in defence, and won seven of his ten challenges.

  • Sebastian Giovinco
    7
    3
    0.00

    Sebastian Giovinco

Did nothing decisive, but provided glimpses of his potential over the final 16 minutes. His movement offered new options for Italy in attack.

  • Alberto Aquilani
    9
    2
    2.50

    Alberto Aquilani

In his half hour of play, the Juve midfielder was a major improvement over Motta. Aquilani was very active in midfield and despite his minimal playing time added some much-needed stability to the Italian midfield as a ball player.

  • Marco Borriello
    4
    2
    2.00

    Marco Borriello

Came in at the break and was quiet for the most part, but had a couple moments that were nearly decisive. The Roma man cleverly set up Rossi in the 54th minute, and was unlucky to have his effort saved on 66 minutes after he was through on goal.

  • Giuseppe Rossi
    12
    2
    3.00

    Giuseppe Rossi

The in-form Villarreal man had little to work with in support, but persevered, and was rewarded with a goal. Rossi had a chance saved early in the second half, and sprung the offside trap to equalise. The quality of his movement surprised the German defence.
