Inter 3-1 Catania: Pazzini brace sees Leonardo's men end league campaign in style ahead of Coppa Italia final

The home side cruised to a comfortable victory at San Siro ahead of their Cup final clash against Palermo to round their league campaign off with three points

By Seán Timbs

Giampaolo Pazzini bagged a brace as Inter dominated Catania for 90 minutes en route to a 3-1 win at San Siro on Sunday.

There was really nothing to play for due to Inter’s failure to take the Serie A title race to the final day, and Catania’s safety from the relegation battle.

As a result, Leonardo played something of an understrength team with an eye on the upcoming Coppa Italia final against Palermo.

Despite the stakes being low however, from the outset, both teams seemed desperate to prove a point on the last day of the season, with Inter seeing lots of the ball.

The hosts were determined to give a good account of themselves and it was they who drew first blood after 17 minutes when good work from Houssine Kharja allowed him to poke the ball to Pazzini, who made no mistake with a firm sweeping finish.

The home side were now looking to dominate proceedings and that’s exactly what they did for the remainder of the first half with most of their chances being created by Kharja.

The visitors held out until the half time whistle, but the team talk seemed to have no effect as Diego Simeone’s men immediately found themselves two down after the break as Pazzini doubled his tally, tapping in a precision cross from substitute Diego Milito to make it 2-0.

Two easy | Pazzini's brace gave his side a routine home victory

Things went from bad to worse for Catania and it was soon 3-0 when Japan defender Yuto Nagatomo picked up the ball on the right and unleashed a fabulous strike, leaving the keeper with no chance.

The visitors replied three minutes later however, when Pablo Ledesma used space in the box efficiently to fire into the bottom corner and give his team a lifeline.

But it was to prove little more than a consolation in the end as Inter soon regained their dominant form with Kharja and Nagatomo in particular consistently causing problems down the flanks.

Leonardo's team comfortably saw out the victory and the final whistle was greeted by a warm reception from the San Siro crowd, who applauded the team's efforts in Serie A, where they finish second behind rivals AC Milan but ahead of Napoli.
