Euro 2012 Qualifier: Netherlands 2-1 Finland - Klaas-Jan Huntelaar the hero for disappointing Dutch
Early goal enough to see off Scandinavians
By Stefan Coerts
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar helped Netherlands to a 2-1 win against Finland by netting a brace in the first 20 minutes of the game.
Mikael Forssell pegged a goal back for Finland, but the visitors were unable to restore parity in the Group E encounter.
The Dutch started the match brilliantly and needed only seven minutes to break the deadlock. Wesley Sneijder sent in a perfect cross after a corner kick and Huntelaar beat his man to the ball before heading home.
The new Schalke signing made it five goals in two Euro 2012 qualifiers only 10 minutes later. Mark van Bommel went down in the area after a foul from a Finnish defender, leaving the referee no other choice but to award a spot kick. Huntelaar stepped up and slotted home with ease.
Finland weren't impressed too much though and pulled one back in the 18th minute. Nigel de Jong lost sight of his man after a corner kick and Forssell took advantage by heading the ball into the back of the net.
The away side then got several chances to restore parity, but the Scandinavians failed to beat Holland goalie Maarten Stekelenburg. The Ajax glovesman pulled off superb saves to deny Mika Vayrynen on two occasions, while he saved Forssell's volleyed shot as well.
Rafael van der Vaart had a good chance to restore Holland's two-goal lead, but his shot was deflected out for a corner kick by Finland goalkeeper Otto Fredrikson.
Oranje took over the initiative again in the second half, but they were unable to create any serious chances. Sneijder tried his luck from long range once, but the Inter star aimed high and wide.
Daniel Sjolund and Forssell caused some dangerous situations for the Scandinavians, but they were no longer able to cut through the Dutch defence like they did before the break.
Netherlands sit joint first in the table in Group E with six points from two matches. Finland on the other hand have yet to collect any points and share last spot with minnows San Marino.
Oranje's next match is the away game against Moldova on October 8, while Finland host Hungary on October 12.
