Panathinaikos 0-0 Rubin Kazan: Chances few and far between in disappointing stalemate
Not one for the football purists
By Vasil Kotsev
The spoils were shared tonight at the Athens Olympic Stadium as Panathinaikos and Rubin Kazan failed to determine a winner. Both teams hardly created any clear-cut chances and the game ended in a disappointing stalemate.
After a short period of domination for the visitors, the hosts grew into the game and had two good chances near the eight-minute mark, but Rubin's defence did well to deny the Greek champions.
Sergei Kornilenko went close on two occasions in the next twenty minutes as he first put a header wide, following a corner kick on the left, and was later denied on the line by Loukas Vyntra. Alan Kasaev also had a chance to break the deadlock for Rubin Kazan in the 34th minute, but his shot from the left side of the box was blocked by Alexandros Tzorvas.
French striker Djibril Cisse was presented with a great chance just before half-time, but headed poorly from inside the box, wasting what was one of the very few opportunities for the Shamrock. This proved to be the final moment of interest of a very scrappy first half.
Rubin continued to dominate the game after the break, and despite not creating much in attacking sense, clearly looked like the better team.
The first opportunity for either team in the second half came as late as the 64th minute when Alan Kasaev missed to punish Panathinaikos for their sloppy defending. Two minutes later Cesar Navas had a chance to open the scoring, but flashed his header over the bar from the box after a cross from Christian Noboa.
Out of nowhere the Shamrock had the ball in the net in the 76th minute, but the goal was controversially ruled out for offside, although Djibril Cisse seemed onside in the build-up. This gave much needed boost to Panathinaikos, who were starting to grow in confidence.
After a brief period in which the hosts threatened to score Rubin regained control, but substitute Petr Bystrov and Aleksandr Ryazantsev failed to convert the chances that came their way and the game finished 0-0.
Following tonight's result, the visitors are third in group D, while Panathinaikos follow after. The two sides meet again on the second of November in Russia.
