Motherwell 0-1 Celtic: Daryl Murphy penalty gives Neil Lennon's side all three points
Hoops bounce back from Europa League defeat at Fir Park...
By Chris Medland
Celtic maintained their 100% record in the Scottish Premier League with a narrow win away at Motherwell.
Daryl Murphy was the match-winner, converting a second-half penalty after Steven Saunders had been sent off for bringing down Shaun Maloney.
Both sides came in to the match on the back of disappointing exits in the Europa League on Thursday night, and Motherwell made just one change from their beaten side: Steve Jennings replacing Nick Blackman in midfield.
There were a whole host of changes from the midweek line up for Celtic though, including two debutants: Fraser Forster in goal and Emilio Izaguirre at left back, while Glenn Loovens, Murphy and Maloney also came in to the side.
Celtic had the better of the first half and probably should have opened the scoring inside five minutes, when James Forest laid the ball across to Maloney, who was somehow thwarted by Darren Randolph in the ‘Well goal.
It was Maloney again who spurned a chance midway through the half, when the Scot headed James Forest’s cross wide, before Motherwell were forced in to a change with Jonathan Page coming on for the injured Steven Hammell.
Maloney almost gave Celtic the lead in stunning fashion just before half time, cutting in from the left flank and dancing his way past three defenders before firing in to the side netting on the angle.
The second half saw fewer opportunities for the away side, with Georgios Samaras and Daryl Murphy failing to really threaten the Motherwell goal with half chances.
Maloney continued to be the main danger, flashing a strike across the face of goal from the left, before he was involved in the game’s defining moment.
Saunders fouled Maloney in the Motherwell box to give away a penalty, and was given his marching orders as he was adjudged to be the last man.
Murphy stepped up to coolly dispatch the spot-kick and give Celtic all three points to go top of the SPL.
