Europa League Qualifier: Motherwell 0-1 OB Odense (Agg: 1-3) - Nine-man Danes hold on to advance
Fir Park side miss penalty to add to night of misery
By Tony Alvarez
Motherwell bowed out of the Europa League following a 1-0 home defeat to Danish side Odense.
The Scottish side went into the game knowing that a single goal and a clean sheet would take them through on the away goals ruling following a 2-1 defeat in Denmark.
Motherwell were on top in the early exchanges without ever creating any real goalscoring opportunities.
There was heartbreak for Motherwell fans when in the 28th minute Odense striker Peter Utaka scored with his side’s first real chance of the game, smashing the ball into the back of the net following a corner.
The match seemed to race through to half time without incident and Motherwell knew they needed to score twice in the second half to have any chance of staying in the competition.
Motherwell were again on top in the early stages of the second half and were piling on the pressure but efforts by Tom Hateley and Steven Saunders were blocked by the Odense defence.
Another chance was squandered by Nick Blackman as his downward header was gathered by Roy Carroll, the former Manchester United goalkeeper.
Moments later Carroll made a top-class save to yet again to deny Blackman and Motherwell a route back into this tie.
Odense were reduced to 10 men when Espen Ruud was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Motherwell pushed forward frantically but to no real avail before Odense were reduced to nine men on 85 minutes as Anders Moller Christensen was given his second yellow card for handling in the area. Gifted an avenue back into the game, Jamie Murphy saw his penalty come back off the post, and Motherwell's hopes went with it.
