Europa League Qualifier: FC Utrecht 4-0 Celtic (Agg: 4-2) - Hoops overturned over first leg lead
Embarrassing night for Lennon's men...
By Tony Alvarez
Celtic crashed out of the Europa League having taken a 2-0 lead into the tie with an embarrassing 4-0 defeat at the hands of Dutch side FC Utrecht.
Neil Lennon's men travelled to Utrecht who finished sixth in the Dutch Eredivisie last season, feeling very confident having controlled the previous fixture at Celtic Park.
Celtic went behind on the night from the penalty spot after Utrecht captain Michael Silberbauer was felled inside the box by Jos Hooiveld and Ricky van Wolfswinkel converted the following spot kick.
The Dutch side then levelled the tie overall with another penalty when keeper Lukasz Zaluska looked to take man and ball, sending Mertens flying. The Celtic keeper was booked for his troubles and van Wolfswinkel scored his second penalty of the match.
The match went into half time at 2-0 on the night and 2-2 overall, with everything to play for in the second half.
Things went from bad to worse for Celtic when after only a minute of the second period their defence was sliced apart and van Wolfswinkel fired home to completed his hat-trick.
Celtic then slipped even further behind when Utrecht substitute Barry Maguire scored from 20 yards to almost certainly eliminate the Scottish side from this seasons Europa League.
Things did not get any easier for The Hoops as van Wolfswinkel nearly grabbed his fourth of the game moments later after finding himself in acres of space, but he saw his low effort fizz just wide of the left hand post.
The match then finished without incident and without Celtic looking like they were going to get back into the game.
There are very few positives Lennon can take from this embarrassing defeat, only managing two shots on target in the entire 90 minutes.
