Champions League Qualifier: Ajax 2-1 Dynamo Kiev (Agg 3-2) - Luis Suarez strike helps Dutch side finally make group stages again
Martin Jol's men did enough to eliminate the Ukrainians...
By Stefan Coerts
Ajax struggled for the full 90 minutes against Dynamo Kiev, but did enough to record a crucial 2-1 home win to reach the group stages of the Champions League.
Goals from Luis Suarez and Mounir el Hamdaoui were enough for the Amsterdam side to make it to the group phase for the first time since 2005 and although Andriy Shevchenko pegged one back for Kiev, it was not enough for the Ukrainians.
Kiev started the match the better side of the two and came close to breaking the deadlock more than once before the break. Roman Eremenko tested the Ajax goalkeeper with an early shot, but Maarten Stekelenburg wasn't troubled and picked up the ball with ease.
Dynamo continued to dominate play and should have opened the scoring after one of their dangerous attacks via the wings. Oleg Gusev beat his marker to the ball after a cross from the left, but headed just over, while again Gusev failed to beat Stekelenburg from close range after a through pass from Artem Milevskiy.
Andriy Yarmolenko won't be too happy with his goal attempt halfway through the first half, as he failed to find the net from five yards out after a cross from Danilo Silva but credit to the Ajax shot stopper who made a brilliant save.
For Ajax, star player Luis Suarez was his side's main threat. The Uruguay international came close to breaking the deadlock with a low shot before opening the scoring after 43 minutes of play. A free-kick bounced off the wall into the path of Suarez and the Ajax captain rounded the goalkeeper before slotting home.
Dynamo Kiev tried to bounce back after the interval, but they failed to seriously trouble the Dutch defence. Ajax, on the other hand, created several chances to double their lead and Kiev goalkeeper Maxim Koval saved his side well with a superb save after a free-kick from Suarez.
Koval never stood a chance against Mounir El Hamdaoui in the 76th minute, though. Miralem Sulejmani set up the Morocco international with a low cross from the left and El Hamdaoui slotted home with ease to make it two for the Godenzonen.
The Ukrainian titans didn't give up, however, and pegged one back via Andriy Shevchenko, who converted a spot-kick in the last 10 minutes of the game. However, it was too little too late as Ajax narrowly held on to their lead.
Wednesday's result means that Ajax have made it to the group stage of the Champions League for the first time since 2005, while Dynamo Kiev will have to settle for a spot in the group stage of the Europa League.
