Player Ratings: West Brom 1-0 Everton

Any minor hopes there were of the Toffees getting into Europe were washed away with a disappointing defeat at the Hawthorns as they failed to break down the Baggies.

A decent performance from a potential Ben Foster-replacement in the England set-up. His hands were safe throughout, confidently coming to the ball at corners and free-kicks

Will be delighted with a first clean sheet since the very first home game of the season. Looked pretty comfortable for most of the match with Anichebe troubling Tamas.

Struggled to deal with Anichebe in the first half, but the big Nigerian didn't do much in second half, therefore making his game much easier after half-time.

A strange afternoon for the former Reading man as he didn't look under threat too often when Coleman or Osman ran at him, but looked uncomfortable is possession and his mistake in giving the ball to Osman in the first half very nearly led to an Everton goal.

  • Steven Reid

    Steven Reid

Looked shaky at times when Baines or Anichebe ran at him with the ball, whilst he offered very little in attack. Nothing disastrous, but not particularly inspiring.

Always willing to take the ball and it was his lofted pass that played Odemwingie through for Mulumbu's goal. However, the Northern Ireland international often looked like a passenger when Everton were on the attack as he didn't offer much in a defensive sense.

  • Youssouf Mulumbu

    Youssouf Mulumbu

Scored the opener by appearing in the Everton box late after starting the move himself back on the halfway line. But following an impressive opening in which his long-balls over the Everton defence were causing headaches, his passing turned sloppy, but was still a good destructive force in the midfield.

Good all-action display from the big Austrian who was sporting a new blue and white haircut. The former Wigan man was very effective at keeping Mikel Arteta out of the game in the first half and his passing wasn't bad either.

A quiet afternoon from the usually dangerous wideman. Looked threatening the few times he looked to take on Hibbert, but after the first half an hour, the home side sat back and offered little as an attacking threat. Almost found the net in the first half after he got loose from Hibbert, nutmegged Distin, rounded Howard, but couldn't find the net as Hibbert heroically cleared on the line.

A fairly anonymous performance from the Irishman. Attempted to link-up with Odemwingie at times, but whenever the hosts looked to attack everything was aimed at the Nigerian, therefore service to him was at a minimal. Almost grabbed West Brom's second after a tantalising cross from Odemwingie, but his left leg wasn't quite long enough.

Peter Odemwingie Top of the Match

The man who has been grabbing all the headlines due to his goals this time turned provider after his brilliant strength held off Distin and then cut the ball back Mulumbu. Always looked a threat and caused the Everton backline infinite problems.

A decent cameo, causing problems down the left when he came on. Couldn't add any more goals though.

Only feature of note after coming on in the 67th minute was being the recipient of Bilyaletdinov's wild tackle. Didn't do too much attacking as West Brom looked to sit back.

Wasn't on the pitch long enough to make any impact.

Couldn't have done anything for the goal as Mulumbu buried his shot from point-blank range. Did make some good saves, particuarly one from an Odemwingie header in which he was already falling the other way. Thought he was going to have to come off, but battled on.

  • Tony Hibbert

    Tony Hibbert

A very good performance from the man who still hasn't scored a senior goal. Thomas did cause him problems when he rarely attacked, but aside from a few instances, Hibbert had an easy afternoon and was a decent outlet in the second half, whipping in a number of good crosses.

    Phil Jagielka

Like Distin, his performance got better as the match went on. Started off shakily with Odemwingie's movement getting the best of the Everton defence, but was very solid in the second half when called upon.

  • Sylvain Distin

    Sylvain Distin

Started the match in highly unconvincing fashion as he was out-battled by Odemwingie for Mulumbu's goal, although the former Manchester City man will argue he was fouled. Mulumbu's passes over the top caused him problems at the start, but as the match progressed he was more and more comfortable with West Brom posing little attacking threat in the second half.

  • Leighton Baines

    Leighton Baines

Nothing spectacular from the England international, but solid nevertheless. Very little came down West Brom's right in an attacking sense, and even when anything did, it was invariably nullified by Baines. A decent attacking outlet in the second half too as Everton piled on the pressure.

  • John Heitinga

    John Heitinga

A good performance in the midfield, completely nullifying Mulumbu and Brunt in the second half and also provided a decent threat from set-pieces. Tenacious display from the Dutchman.

  • Seamus Coleman

Seamus Coleman Flop of the Match

Fairly poor performance from the young Ireland international. At times he was almost invited to attack Shorey at left-back, but more often than not he would cut back and pass, therefore making him highly ineffective. Withdrawn on the hour mark for Jermaine Beckford.

  • Phil Neville

    Phil Neville

Decent performance from the captain as he helped Hibbert out against the oft-dangerous Thomas. Didn't do much from an attacking sense, but acted well as a defensive shield. Picked up a yellow card for a silly tackle on Mulumbu. Replaced by Bilyaletdinov.

  • Mikel Arteta

    Mikel Arteta

Not his best match by any stretch of the imagination as he went missing for long periods of the match, but always looked assured in possession and his passing ability never let him down, but never looked like he really wanted to get fully involved, whilst his decision making was also questionable.

  • Leon Osman

    Leon Osman

Decent showing from Everton's Mr Reliable. Always gave his colleagues an option and was willing to attack the West Brom defence when in possession.

  • Victor Anichebe

    Victor Anichebe

Looked very dangerous and quite impressive in the first half as his strength, hold-up play and even his ball control caused Tamas and Reid several problems, but in his moment of truth, the Nigerian international couldn't produce a good enough finish to beat Carson. Withdrawn for Rodwell with 10 minutes to go after not doing anything in the second half.

    Diniyar Bilyaletdinov

One of the shortest substitute performances you are ever likely to see. Replaced Phil Neville after 72 minutes, but was sent off for a wild lunge on Morrison. Admittedly, the Russian didn't go in two-footed, but his studs were showing and he was almost asking for a dismissal.

  • Jack Rodwell

Replaced Anichebe with 10 minutes to go. Assured in possession, but didn't really add anything to the Everton team when they were looking to get an equaliser.

Fairly anonymous after coming on for the disappointing Seamus Coleman. Didn't do anything of note.
