• Anfield, Liverpool
Referee: P. Walton
• Attendance: 44923
M. Rodríguez 10'
D. Kuijt 59'
L. Suárez 65'
That's full time at Anfield, with Liverpool taking fifth place after emerging triumphant following goals from Rodriguez, Kuyt and Suarez. The visitors had plenty of possession and lots of opportunities form set-pieces but were unable to make them count
90' + 3'
Four minutes of added time at Anfield
With only a few minutes left, it is Newcastle doing all the pressing as they look for a consolation goal, without looking like scoring
A standing ovation for Suarez as he comes off to be replaced by Joe Cole. Another brilliant performance by the striker
Ranger holds the ball up just outside the penalty area, before laying it off to Nolan to strike it just over the bar
Liverpool are playing at a much slower tempo now. The match has been fairly even, with the difference being seen in the final third
Credit to Newcastle for keeping up their pressure and they probably should have had a penalty. Ameobi is kicked by Skrtel but nothing is given despite the striker's claims
Once again the set-piece comes to nothing
Ameobi has a chance to slip substitue Ranger in, but he delays, before Johnson brings him down on the edge of the penalty area.
The visitors send a number of crosses into the penalty area, but there is nobody there to attack the ball. Not the first time this has happened today
Johnson crossed from the left but Meireles can only send it wide of the near post
Newcastle continue to push forward, but since the penalty they have lost their edge and haven't offered a threat. Liverpool are coasting towards fifth place in the league
With 20 minutes left, Kenny Dalglish brings on Carroll for goalscorer Rodriguez, with the game as good as over
Flanagan is penalised for a hand-ball, but referee Walton lets him off with another warning. Big cheers from the home crowd as Carroll prepares to come on
The talk has been all about the partnership between Suarez and Carroll, but the link-up between Suarez and Kuyt has been extremely effective today and the home side will have their eye set on more goals
Assist Dirk Kuyt
Goal Luis Suárez
GOAL! Suarez has been brilliant this half and he gets the goal he deserves. His ball to Kuyt in the box is blocked, but it falls to the Dutchman anyway and he poked it back to his strike partner who could not miss from a few yards out
Liverpool have stepped it up this half and Suarez works another shooting opportunity after being fed by Meireles on the edge of the Newcastle box, but he shot wide
And it should have been nine. Kuyt has a free header seven yards out from a free-kick, but he puts it wide under no pressure
That was Kuyt's eighth goal in seven matches. Williamson was booked for his foul on Suarez
Yellow Card Mike Williamson
Assist Luis Suárez
Penalty Goal Dirk Kuyt
GOAL! Williamson tries to shield the ball out for a goal-kick, but Suarez knicks the ball away from him, before the Newcastle defender brings him down. Kuyt hits the penalty to the bottom right, sending Krul the wrong way
The home side almost score a fortunate second, as Rodriguez's cross from the left hits the top of the bar
Suarez has seen more of the ball already this half and he is allowed to cut in from the left by Simpson, before winning a corner which comes to nothing
After the early chances the game had died down a bit as both sides start committing fouls in the middle of the pitch
Yellow Card Cheikh Tiote
Cheikh Tiote bodychecks Rodriguez, who rolls around slightly theatrically on the ground. The Newcastle man is booked for the foul
Now it's Liverpool who nearly score. Suarez brushes Enrique off the ball, before racing into the box where he is tripped by Coloccini. The Uruguyuan decided to stay on his feet, before his shot hits Williamson and spins away. Great start to the second half, but Coloccini is lucky that Suarez did not go down
And they have an unbelievable chance straight away. Nolan chips it into the box and Barton running in at the back post hits it wide
Newcaslte begin the second half
More from Jonathan Birchall at Anfield: 'Half time here at Anfield and neither side have too much to shout about in truth, with Peter Walton's whistle having been met with a collective sigh of relief from the Kop. A little dull in the sun on Merseyside.'
Half-time at Anfield. Maxi Rodriguez's deflected strike after 10 minutes is the difference between the two sides, but the visitors will be bouyed with how they responded to that early setback. Bizarrely, Suarez and Coloccini have already swapped shirts!
There will be one minute of stoppage time
As half-time approaches, it is all Newcastle who have penned Liverpool into their own half, but they are yet to seriously threaten Reina's goal
Gutierrez teases Flanagan again and sends in a cross which Ameobi ambitiously tries to volley with his left-foot. The balls spins off to safety, but the away side definitely look the more likely to score at the minute
Barton goes for a bouncing ball on the edge of the Liverpool area and he gets a kick from Meireles. This time Enrique takes the free-kick but it is blocked by the wall and spins out for a corner
Spearing chips in a lovely cross from around 30 yards out in the middle of the pitch straight on to the head of Lucas, but he heads straight at Krul
A corner this time from the right is laid off to Kevin Nolan in the opponent's box, but he can't wrap his foot around it and it goes harmlessly over the bar
The Newcastle winger is having a fine game and he draws another foul from the already booked Flanagan. This time Barton's delivery is better, but nobody can get on the end of it
Andy Carroll starts warming up, prompting the Kop to sing 'one Andy Carroll'. Gutierrez wins another corner and twice Barton hits it straight at Meireles who is standing just a few yards in front of him. Another wasted set piece
A corner this time for the visitors which Ameobi gets his head to and Liverpool can clear. Better from Newcastle, but the home side still look threatening on the break
From Jonathan Birchall at Anfield: 'Both managers are prowling the technical area as both side's struggle break the other down. The travelling Toon fans are still in fine voice despite a pretty lacklustre display from their team so far. In contrast, the Kop is unusually quiet at the moment. Maybe the sun has taken it out of them?'
Yellow Card Jon Flanagan
Flanagan has had problems dealing with Gutierrez, who he trips again before being shown a yellow card. Another good position for Newcastle from a set piece, but Liverpool clear it easily
Newcastle keeping the ball better now, but they are not going anywhere and after being harrassed by red shirts they give the ball away. This game has yet to really spark into life despite Maxi's early goal
Jay Spearing hits a shot form just outside the area which bounces just in front of Krul, who spills it before gathering it at the second attempt
Another bright move, but Peter Lovenkrands plays a poor pass in the penalty area, allowing Jamie Carragher to clear
The away side have had their first real spell of possession, but Simpson's cross from the right is a waste
Luis Enrique and Simpson both give the ball away in their own half, but both times they get away with it. Jonas Gutierrez then makes a break down the left and is tripped in a good position for Newcastle, but Joey Barton hits it straight out for a goal-kick. The Argentinian has been the visitors' brightest player so far
The home side are doing all the pressing, but have yet to create another scoring opportunity. Newcastle, by contrast, have yet to get hold of the ball since their early corner
Goal Maxi Rodríguez
GOAL!!! Liverpool take the lead and Maxi Rodriguez will claim it. The home side have played with a lot of width early on and John Flanagan's cross falls to Rodriguez in the box after a poor clearing header by Mike Williamson. His shot is deflected by Danny Simpson into the net, leaving Tim Krul wrong-footed
First effort on goal comes from Liverpool. Glen Johnson gets down the left and sends in a cross which Coloccini and Nolan fail to clear. It comes to Meireles on the edge of the box but he scuffs his shot wide
Newcastle win the first corner, which Pepe Reina gets hold off before dropping the ball. His blushes are spared when referee Peter Walton gives a free-kick against Kevin Nolan
News coming in that Newcastle sub James Perch has had to pull out after picking up an injury in the warm-up. He is replaced by 19-year-old defender James Tavernier
The game kicks off, with Liverpool in their tradition red kit, whilst Newcastle are in all white
Our man Jonathan Birchall at Anfield: 'Football fans love a pantomime villain don’t they? The PA announcing the Liverpool bench left it until the very end to read out the name of Andy Carroll, as both sets of fans booed and cheered vociferously. It’s certainly given the game a nice edge on what is a gorgeous day here on Merseyside. Only a couple of minutes until kick off now...'
There is just one change for Liverpool, with Glen Johnson coming in for Jack Robinson at full-back, whilst Andy Carroll has made the bench. Newcastle are unchanged from last weekend's 1-1 draw at Blackpool and are looking for their first win at Anfield since 1994.
Newcastle: Krul; Simpson, Coloccini, Williamson, Enrique; Barton, Nolan, Tiote, Gutierrez, Ameobi, Lovenkrands. Subs: Harper, Perch, R. Taylor, S. Taylor, Ranger, Ferguson, Kuqi
And here are today's teams, starting with Liverpool: Reina; Johnson, Carragher, Skrtel, Flanagan; Maxi, Lucas, Spearing Meireles; Kuyt, Suarez. Subs: Gulacsi, Kyrgiakos, Robinson, Shelvey, Cole, Ngog, Carroll.
Hello and welcome to Goal.com UK's live coverage of the Premier League match between Liverpool and Newcastle United. The hosts are enjoying a great run of form under Kenny Dalglish and a win today would see them leapfrog Tottenham into the fifth place, albeit having played a game more. Newcastle, on the other hand, are all but safe from relegation, but will be looking to prove a point with former player Andy Carroll sitting on the Liverpool bench.
