Live Commentary

  • All over at Anfield. The home side doing the damage before half-time to cruise to three points. Carroll opened the scoring with a stunning strike before adding a trademark header after Kuyt had doubled the home lead. City well beaten and what looked like a serious injury to Tevez could result in them facing Manchester United in next week’s FA Cup Semi-Final without their talismanic front man. Tonight though, they travel home well beaten, Liverpool 3 Manchester City 0.
  • 90' + 1'
    SubstitutionAndy Carroll David N'Gog
  • 90'
Carroll leaves the field to a handsome reception. His goals pivotal in crushing City’s hopes before half-time.
  • 89'
Tireless work from Kuyt down the left flank allows him to feed Suarez who hangs a ball up at the back post for Carroll. The two goal hero almost adds a third as his header lands on the roof of the night. He was stretching and the cross didn’t have great pace on it.
  • 87'
Liverpool playing with pomp, just keeping the ball and making it an even longer night for City.
  • 83'
    SubstitutionMario Balotelli Nigel De Jong
  • 83'
Yaya Toure hits an absolute rocket from 35 yards and stings the hands of Reina. City have a corner and Reina undoubtedly has a stinging pair of hands. What a striker by Toure.
  • 81'
Kuyt hound the ball back on the touch line and a bursting run by the opening scorer ends when he slides the ball to Meireles who cuts inside to test Hart with a low drive. Good hands by England’s keeper.
  • 79'
Quick distribution form Reina lands at the feet of Suarez and he makes the most of Liverpool’s 2 v 1 advantage to slip Kuyt in on goal. The angle is tight and on his weaker foot, Kuyt drags his shot wide of the post.
  • 77'
Spearing encapsulates the evening. The young midfielder snoffs a loose ball in midfield and clatters into Yaya Toure to win the ball and get Liverpool moving again. He has been excellent alongside Lucas for Liverpool.
  • 75'
A midfield burst from Yaya Toure gets away fans momentarily excited but his shot is tame and wide of goal. Good play by the former Barcelona man but in keeping with his sides performance, not good enough.
  • 71'
Greg Stobart, our correspondent at Anfield says: Roberto Mancini looks like a broken man on the touchline, perhaps regretting his decision to leave David Silva, Nigel de Jong and Mario Balotelli out of his starting line-up. The City fans certainly aren't happy with the contribution of Edin Dzeko tonight and the Bosnian's failure to chase a ball into the corner was greeted with howls of derision in the away end.
  • 70'
Twenty minutes remain at Anfield and the only uncertain element is the margin of victory. Three minutes of first-half damage have taken the game beyond the visitors.
  • 69'
Another Liverpool attack ends in a wild shot from Suarez. The Uruguayan slices wide from a tight angle after Kuyt smashes a shot at goal which is well blocked.
  • 67'
Balotelli draws more cheers from home fans. An attempt from 30-yards sails over the bar. City look drained of belief.
  • 66'
With 25 minutes to go, the result looks in no doubt at all. Liverpool have been quicker to every ball, hungrier and more adventurous in their play.
  • 65'
More chaos in the City area. Hart palms a cross by Meireles away and Suarez lobs it back at goal but isn’t near the target.
  • 62'
Balotelli feels the wrath of the Anfield faithful. The Italian takes treatment but home fans think he isn’t really hurt. Dalglish won’t mind seeing the minutes tick by.
  • 59'
    SubstitutionJames Milner David Silva
  • 59'
Milner makes his way off for Silva. The England man shakes his head.
  • 57'
Ten minutes in and no sign of City launching an attempt for the points. David Silva is being readied on the touchline. All he has to do is mastermind a three goal revival. Easy nights work for the Spaniard?
  • 55'
Suarez again shows great feet in the middle of the field. A cleverly slipped ball into Carroll should have been returned if the giant striker had taken more care.
  • 53'
The home side take the initiative once again. Another corner drops to Spearing but he almost clears the Kop. So far, the Reds look intent on getting another.
  • 51'
Golden chance for number four for Liverpool. In-swinging corner reaches Kuyt six yards out but his glancing header is wide of the post. He looked to be stretching but from so close, he should have tested Hart.
  • 49'
Suarez feeds Carroll twenty yards out and he has one thing in mind. He takes aim but Barry blocks well. The effort looked to be heading on target.
  • 48'
Kuyt presses Kolarov and shows Liverpool have no intention of dropping the intensity of their pressing.
  • 47'
Steady start to the second period by both sides. Will City go for it or just limit the damage?
  • 45'
Second-half underway. No subs as of yet.
  • The players make their way out at Anfield and Liverpool will attack the Kop in the second-half. We will keep you posted with any substitutions.
  • Half-time analysis from Greg Stobart, our reporter at the ground: A perfect half of football for Liverpool as much as it was a disaster for Manchester City. Roberto Mancini's visitors have simply been unable to cope with the intensity of Liverpool's play and the potent attacking threat of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll. This game is already out of sight for City and Mancini will be thinking about how he can pick his side up for Saturday's FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United. Carlos Tevez's injury will also be a massive worry as City supporters watch Liverpool put a huge dent in their top four hopes.
  • Half-time at Anfield. Liverpool bounce down the tunnel with a huge advantage thanks to a goal from Kuyt and two for Carroll. Can the new-boy grab his hat-trick in the second-half when City, without the injured Tevez will surely have to go for broke.
  • 45'
Applause for debutant Flanagan as he goes stride for stride with Balotelli and Sheppard’s the ball back to Reina. Intelligent defending by the 18-year-old.
  • 45'
A whipped in free-kick from Kolarov gives Lescott a half chance but his header is wide. Reina still largely a spectator as any effort fails to hit the target.
  • 44'
Approaching the interval, will Mancini opt for harsh words? His troops have been second best but surely he needs to throw caution to the wind in the second period. They could do with a goal before half-time.
  • 42'
City launch a well worked attack but Johnson’s fizzed cross is hacked away by the well positioned Spearing.
  • 40'
Greg Stobart,’s reporter at Anfield has caught his breath. He says: Astonishing couple of minutes for Liverpool and Anfield is rocking more than I have seen in any other match here this season. In front of the watching Fabio Capello, Andy Carroll has eased some of the easiness about the start of his Liverpool career with two wonderfully taken goals. But it was amateur defending from City just when they were starting to grow into the game and Roberto Mancini is cutting a lonely figure on the touchline as the rain lashes down. Perhaps someone should offer him a brolly.
  • 39'
Dalglish is rolling back the years at Anfield. His side exude confidence as the heavens open at Anfield.
  • 36'
THIS IS INSANE. 3-0 TO LIVERPOOL. No sooner have the celebrations died down from the second do Liverpool have a second. AND ANDY CARROLL HAS A SECOND. Meireles with an in-swinging cross from the left flank, Carroll with a big leap, Hart with no chance as the ball flies into the top corner. Epic from Liverpool, Nightmare for City.
  • 35'
    Assist Raúl Meireles
  • 35'
    Goal Andy Carroll
  • 34'
    Goal Dirk Kuyt
  • 33'
SCRAMBLE, SCRAMBLE, SCRAMBLE.......GOAL. Liverpool double their lead through Dirk Kuyt. Shot after Shot rained in at Hart’s goal and with every break down in play, Liverpool recycle the ball and shoot again. Aurelio eventually finds space and shoots, his effort is blocked but rolls across the box to Kuyt who slides the ball across Hart into the corner of the net. 2-0 to Liverpool.
  • 31' correspondent Greg Stobart at the ground says: City have finally settled down and are stroking the ball around nicely without particularly threatening the Liverpool goal. Fabio Aurelio's lunge on Adam Johnson drew a few gasps from the press box. It must have been bad if Mark Halsey – one of the most lenient referees in the Premier League – decided to book the Brazilian.
  • 30'
Approaching the half hour and City seem to have finally settled. Reina is yet to be worked but the balance of play seems to slowly be tipping as Liverpool look to consolidate.
  • 29'
Back on his feet Dzeko punces on a loose ball 25-yards out and jinks himself shooting space but pulls the ball wide of Reina’s right hand post. A decent effort but not really enough to cause the home fans concern.
  • 27'
    Yellow Card Fabio Aurelio
  • 27'
Aurelio enters the notebook for a rash challenge on Dzeko. The Brazilian thought he could win a loose ball but only managed to slide through the former Wolfsburg man.
  • 25'
Debutant John Flanagan has so far had a solid start for the Reds at right-back – seeing snippets of the ball but relatively un-tested defensively as City look to use Johnson on the other wing.
  • 23'
A quarter of the way into the match and there’s no doubt who the better side are. Liverpool have looked hungrier and Dalglish will be thrilled with some of the link up play between Suarez, Carroll and Kuyt. Carroll’s goal the icing on the cake during a superb opening quarter from the home side.
  • 21'
Better from City, neat possession of the play allows Boyata to swing in a cross fro the right and substitute Balotelli rises at the back post but heads high into the Kop.
  • 20'
Liverpool look hungry. Every time the ball breaks down they look intent on making it difficult for City to build any sort of move – hounding the ball down quickly seems to be the order of the day for the home side.
  • 18'’s match reporter at Anfield Greg Stobart says: You sensed that goal was coming after a super start from Liverpool, roared on by the Kop in full voice. Roberto Mancini has been on the touchline since almost the opening kick, desperately trying to chivvy his side into action as he watched Luis Suarez pick the ball up in space no less than three times. The worst possible start for City was confirmed as Carlos Tevez hobbled off with a dead leg to be replaced by Mario Balotelli, who has slotted in up front alongside Edin Dzeko.
  • 16'
    SubstitutionCarlos Tévez Mario Balotelli
  • 16'
Tevez can’t continue so Balotelli enters the fray.
  • 15'
Major blow for City. Recovering from the goal, their hopes dealt a hammer blow as Tevez departs the play with an injury. It doesn’t look good for the Argentinian.
  • 13'
    Goal Andy Carroll
  • 13'
    Injury Carlos Tévez
  • 12'
GOAL. ABSOLUTLEY STUNNING BY ANDY CARROLL. Liverpool scrap for loose balls in midfield and when Meireless has a shot blocked by Kompany, Carroll pounces on the rebound and slams it home from all of 20-yards. He blasted it low and hard, Joe Hart got something on it but the power was too much to handle. FIRST GOAL for the £30 million man.
  • 10'
Suarez does well down the left and a firm cross wins a corner from Kolarov.
  • 8'
Suarez again shoots at goal but this time he smashes high into the stands. He looks up for this. Hart’s save to deny him moments ago was top draw.
  • 6'
SUAREZ IS IN BEHIND. The Uruguayan slipped in by Carroll and hits a shot low with his left foot but JOE HART BRILLIANTLY DENIES HIM THE OPENER BY TIPPING ONTO THE POST. Could and quite possibly should have been 1-0.
  • 5'
First mini opening of the game. Direct play by Liverpool allows Carrol to knock down for Suarez who finds Kuyt 18-yards out. The Dutchman smashes over from the edge of the 18-yard box. A decent opening, Kuyt will be annoyed he didn’t hit the target.
  • 4'
City look intent on getting the ball out left to Adam Johnson. His latest Foray almost causes a problem but a heavy touch affords Liverpool a goal kick.
  • 3'
The Reds look like they’ve lined up with a 4-4-2. Lucas and Spearing through the middle of midfield, Kuyt and Meireless lining up wide.
  • 2'
A bright start by the hosts as a cross from the left is well cleared by Kompany. City respond by settling the play by winning a series of throw-ins down the left through Adam Johnson.
  • Applause for debutant Flanagan as he goes stride for stride with Balotelli and Sheppard’s the ball back to Reina. Intelligent defending by the 18-year-old.
  • The Reds have a perfectly balanced record without Captain Steven Gerrard this season. Winning four, losing four and drawing two. Which way will the balance tip after 90 minutes against Roberto Mancini’s men?
  • Mancini opts for Dzeko over Balotelli and Boyata makes another appearance in the defensive line.
  • The home side turn to 18-year-old John Flanagan to fill in the defensive gaps left by the crocked Agger, Kelly and Johnson and Dalglish will be thankful for the return of Brazilian Fabio Aureilio. Carroll and Suarez spearhead the front-line.
  • Manchester City: Hart; Boyata, Kompany, Lescott, Kolarov; Johnson, Barry, Toure, Milner; Tevez, Dzeko
  • Liverpool: Reina, Flanagan, Carragher, Skrtel, Aurelio, Lucas, Spearing, Meireles, Kuyt, Suarez, Carroll.
