Live Commentary

  • Chelsea claim all three points and now sit third in the table, two points above Manchester City who play Liverpool on Monday night. It still won't happen for Fernando Torres though. Wigan can sympathise with that too - they put a lot into today's game but were simply outclassed in the end and remain rooted to the foot of the table. That's all from our LIVE coverage of today's game - stick around for match reports, player ratings and reaction from all of today's action on Goal.com!!! Enjoy your afternoon.
  • 90' + 4'
GOAL!!! But no, wait, referee Webb has blown for a foul by Torres in the build-up. Malouda tucked the ball home, but it was clearly a foul. AND THAT'S THE FULL-TIME WHISTLE!!!
  • 90' + 4'
Late concern here for Chelsea - Drogba is down and looks to have taken a sore one in challenging for a high ball. Wigan pile forward regardless and CLEVERLEY SHOOTS... saved by Cech. Comfortable save. Drogba only now getting to his feet, and he looks ok.
  • 90' + 2'
Figueroa gets down the left, fires in a low cross... GREAT CHANCE!!! But no, Alex makes a fine block in the six-yard box. Figueroa then fouls in the follow up, is booked, and will miss Wigan's next two games. How crucial might that prove for Wigan in their survival fight?

    Yellow Card Maynor Figueroa
  • 90' + 1'
Four minutes of added time to come...
  • 90'
Chelsea are really beginning to click now, Drogba setting up Ivanovic just six yards from goal, but the defender proves why he's not meant to be in the opposing box by stabbing wide.
  • 89'
OH MY WORD!!!! WHEN WILL TORRES EVER SCORE FOR CHELSEA!!! Wonderful pass from Yossi Benayoun lays it on a plate for Torres, and while it's an exceptionally good stop from Al-Habsi, Torres in his prime would have buried that. Buried it.
  • 88'
Good break from Chelsea, Drogba's long ball finding Malouda, then Torres, then Lampard, who looks to find Torres again but the pass runs through to Al-Habsi.
  • 86'
Conor Sammon gets the wrong side of Alex on a nice through pass but, a bit like Torres, gets the ball caught between his feet and the chance is lost.
  • 85'
    SubstitutionMohamed Diame Victor Moses
  • 84'
Fernando Torres looks very much like he hasn't scored in two and a bit months. Benayoun plays a magnificent ball into his path. It's the sort of pass the former Liverpool duo converted many times in their Anfield days - but Torres gets the ball tangled under his feet and falls over. You almost feel sorry for him - it's not for wont of trying.
  • 81'
The game is somewhat fizzling out now. Diame does at least break inside from the left and try his luck from 20 yards, but Petr Cech would have saved that in his sleep.
  • 78'
Good football from Chelsea releases Torres again, but the ball is nicked off his toe and sent behind for a corner. Malouda to take, but Wigan defend it a lot better this time around.
  • 75'
    SubstitutionPaulo Ferreira Alex
  • 75'
Chelsea are completely dominating now - Wigan have had the stuffing knocked from them having conceded at a poorly defended corner. A welcome return now for Alex, who replaces Paulo Ferreira.
  • 73'
Ramires is able to carry on. And he was nearly witness to history - Fernando Torres' first goal for Chelsea. Terrific run from Drogba on the left and his cross was just inches too far in front of the former Liverpool striker. And then just moments later a long ball from Lampard finds Torres COMPLETELY UNMARKED!!! With nobody near him, the Spaniard fails to control the ball. That is just the way of things for him at the moment.
  • 70'
Ramires is down injured after a hefty challenge from Di Santo. That's a concern for Chelsea ahead of the Manchester United tie on Tuesday.
  • 67'
    Assist Branislav Ivanovic
  • 67'
    Goal Florent Malouda
  • 67'
And we have a goal! A corner is not dealt with by Wigan and Florent Malouda crashes home from close range! 1-0 Chelsea!
  • 64'
That's better from Fernando Torres - shifting the ball inside but not quite making enough room to get a clean shot away. The crowd are absolutely dying for their new signing to break his duck this afternoon.
  • 63'
    SubstitutionCharles N'Zogbia Franco Di Santo
  • 63'
    SubstitutionHugo Rodallega Conor Sammon
  • 63'
Rodallega looks frustrated as he is substituted, with Nzogbia also making way. On come Conor Sammon and Franco Di Santo.
  • 62'
Al-Habsi called into action from a long-range Drogba free kick, which deflects off the wall and requires to be tipped over the bar by the Wigan keeper.
  • 60'
Anelka gets a good reception as he goes off, but Torres gets an even better one as he comes on. A certain Mr Abramovich looks pleased to see his most expensive plaything on the field, judging from his demeanour in his private box.
  • 59'
    SubstitutionNicolas Anelka Fernando Torres
  • 57'
Fernando Torres is receiving his instructions - and it seems as though Anelka will make way for the £50m (and goalless) man.
  • 55'
    Yellow Card David Luiz
  • 55'
And David Luiz is finally booked! He's had two or three of those on Rodallega, and referee Webb has finally had enough.
  • 49'
Wigan come forward down the left, and Nzogbia's low cross is dealt with by a combination of Ivanovic and Luiz. Corner to the visitors, Cech comes a long way and gets just a left hand on it, then McCarthy's deep cross drifts out of play.
  • 47'
Chelsea force the first corner of the second half. It's quickly taken, but the haste caught out the rest of the home team, with nobody in position to take advantage of Malouda's cross.
  • 46'
    SubstitutionJohn Obi Mikel Yossi Benayoun
  • 46'
It's John Obi Mikel who will make way for Benayoun, who makes his first Premier League appearance since September. Wigan to kick off, and we're underway again...
  • Teams are on their way back out, and Yossi Benayoun is ready to come on for Chelsea.
  • Referee Howard Webb blows his whistle and we're goalless at the break. Wigan have looked the more eager to force things, but really don't look to have the teeth needed to break down a solid Chelsea team. Chelsea, however, seem keen to get this over with and concentrate on Tuesday night. Join us for the second half to see if either team can make the breakthrough.
  • 45' + 2'
Corner for Wigan - last chance of the half, almost certainly. Watson's cross, Alcaraz's header. Wide. And that's quite enough for one half.
  • 45'
Into stoppage time. We'll have two minutes of it. Not quite sure why - there's not been any lengthy stoppages.
  • 44'
Nice stuff from Drogba. Great turn, nutmegs Boyce - then thunders it wide from a tight angle. What a waste. Sums up this first half, sadly.
  • 42'
    Yellow Card Emmerson Boyce
  • 42'
And Howard Webb has had enough - he's booked Emmerson Boyce for time-wasting at a throw in. In the Wigan man's defence, his team-mates were doing a terrible job of giving him something to throw to.
  • 40'
MAGNIFICENT SAVE!!! A long ball from deep from Chelsea allows Drogba to provide the flick on and Malouda is through on goal. His shot from just inside the area is brilliantly blocked by Al-Habsi. Malouda might have wanted to do better than he did, but there's no denying the quality of the stop.
  • 37'
Chelsea are beginning to find their feet now. Anelka's effort from the edge of the box deflects for another corner.
  • 36'
David Luiz wins the ball near halfway and begins to stride forward. The crowd start to beg him: SHOOOOOOOOOTTTTT!!! And so he does - high, wide and not so handsome. It was fun to watch though.
  • 34'
Chelsea finally force a corner of their own, and Lampard's cross almost finds Drogba but is just too high for the striker. David Luis ends up with the ball at his feet on the left side of the area and swings over a delicious cross! Well defended by Wigan, who first concede another corner and then deal with the threat once more, allowing Al-Habsi to catch comfortably.
  • 32'
OOPPPHHH! What a strike from James McCarthy. Chelsea only half-clear the corner and the young Ireland international has a pop from 25 yards, which veers narrowly wide of Cech's goal. The Chelsea keeper looked comfortable enough, but he really wasn't going to stop that one if it had been on target.
  • 31'
And now Lampard is dispossessed. McCarthy sets Rodallega away down the left, and it's another corner for Wigan.
  • 30'
Ashley Cole is the latest Chelsea player to fall asleep - easily dispossessed. It's very sloppy stuff from the champions, symptomatic of a season that is ebbing away from them.
  • 27'
Hugo Rodallega is causing David Luiz problems here. The Brazilian gets on the wrong side of his Ecuadorian opponent, and Rodallega wins a corner for his efforts as his shot is blocked by Ivanovic. The first corner leads to another, as Nzogbia's shot is deflected. There's a lengthy delay for the second one - and it really wasn't worth the wait. Rodallega's header is high over the bar and harmless.
  • 24'
You can't help but feel Chelsea are going through the motions here. Wigan have been forcing the issue for the past five minutes or so, and there's little appetite from the men in blue to break that.
  • 21'
David Luiz finally has his first say in the match - barging over Rodallega for no reason whatsoever! The Wigan man was going nowhere there, but now has a free kick. Watson's free kick is better this time... but Diame is offside. That's yet more poor stuff at set-pieces from Wigan.
  • 19'
Free kick to Wigan 35 yards from goal - and that's really poor stuff. You can see why Wigan are down where they are. Ben Watson's set piece is too strong for everybody, and then when Nzogbia retrieves it on the left flank, his cross drifts out over the crossbar. Chelsea didn't even need to do any defending there.
  • 17'
Lovely move from Chelsea. Anelka plays Drogba in down the right and the Ivorian clatters a shot across the face of goal - but nobody is there to tap in. Good football all the same.
  • 16'
Frank Lampard takes an elbow to the face from James McCarthy. A complete accident though - not the first time McCarthy has been involved in an elbowing incident this season mind you, after his run-in with a certain Wayne Rooney earlier in the year.
  • 14'
Ben Watson hauls down Anelka 25 yards from goal. Great opportunity this for Chelsea, Lampard will surely fancy this. Drogba is also standing near the set-piece, as is Ashley Cole. Lampard walks away - it will be Drogba to strike it....MILES OVER THE BAR!!! Terrible effort.
  • 11'
OOHHH! Now that is a close call. Nzogbia plays the ball forward and Rodallega is clean through on goal - but the linesman's flag is up. The Wigan man looked level with the last line of defence when the ball was played.
  • 8'
Chance for Florent Malouda! Drogba lays a ball through the channel for the Frenchman to run onto between the two centre-backs, but his shot is straight at Ali Al-Habsi, who makes an easy save.
  • 8'
Chance for Florent Malouda! Drogba lays a ball through the channel for the Frenchman to run onto between the two centre-backs, but his shot is straight at Ali Al-Habsi, who makes an easy save.
  • 7'
Decision for referee Howard Webb to make!! Ashley Cole tumbles under a challenge in the Wigan box and turns round hoping for a penalty, but the World Cup final referee rightly turns down the pleas.
  • 6'
Wigan are stroking the ball around confidently, as has been their way this season. They may be loitering at the wrong end of the table, but you wouldn't know it from the way they're playing.
  • 3'
Early chance for Chelsea as Lampard finds room in the area but manages to miscue and the opening is wasted.
  • 1'
    And we're underway!
  • The teams are out at a sun-baked Stamford Bridge - it's a day for shades in London, that's for sure. Let's hope the football is as beautiful as the weather!
  • So Chelsea are casting an eye towards their do-or-die Champions League clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, with John Terry rested, and Michael Essien and Fernando Torres also taken out the starting line-up to leave something in the tank for the trip to Manchester.
