Player Ratings: West Bromwich Albion 2-1 Liverpool

By Greg Stobart at the Hawthorns

  • Scott Carson

    Scott Carson

Stayed big to make important early save to deny Kuyt and then saw little of the action until he was forced to pick the ball out of the back of his net.

  • Steven Reid

    3.00

    Steven Reid

Impressive athlete and not afraid to go forward - as shown when his flicked header forced Reina into action. Sometimes looked uncomfortable against the dribbling skills of Suarez.

  • Abdoulaye Meite

    3.50

    Abdoulaye Meite

Strong and powerful up against the physical threat of Carroll but struggled against the clever footwork and nimble movement of Suarez.

  • Jonas Olsson
    7
    5
    3.50

    Jonas Olsson

Certainly up for the battle as he treated Carroll in much the same manner as he did a picture in the tunnel at Stoke. He knew the England forward lacked pace so stayed tight to him and used every trick in the book.

  • Nicky Shorey

    Nicky Shorey

Solid performance from the veteran full-back up against the hardworking Kuyt. Rarely ventured forward but kept his position well.

  • Paul Scharner

    5
    3.00

    Paul Scharner

Sat deep in a holding role for much of the game as West Brom stayed organised. Worked hard and made a nuisance of himself against the technically-minded players like Suarez and Meireles.

  • Youssouf Mulumbu

    3
    3.50

    Youssouf Mulumbu

The Congolese midfielder set the tone for the hosts with his aggressive tackling, constant pressing and tidy use of the ball.

Chris Brunt Top of the Match

Capped a strong performance by keeping his cool to score both penalties, drilling the ball past Reina on both occasions. Always a threat for West Brom with his calmness on the ball and his cultivated left foot.

  • Jerome Thomas
    5
    4
    3.50

    Jerome Thomas

The winger's pace and trickery caused Carragher all sorts of problems, particularly in the first half as he exploited space in behind the Liverpool right-back. Linked up well with Odemwingie but seemed to tire in the second half.

  • Simon Cox
    4
    5
    3.00

    Simon Cox

Handed a start by Roy Hodgson but seemed a little off the pace of the game before he was replaced by Fortune in the 74th minute. Had one excellent chance just after the re-start when he broke the offside trap and struck a fierce volley at Reina from 16 yards.

  • Peter Odemwingie
    47
    6
    4.00

    Peter Odemwingie

The Nigerian striker was a constant threat for West Brom and it was no surprise that he won both penalties after good runs into the box. Clever movement, searing pace and powerful shooting meant Liverpool could never take their eyes off him.

Substitutions

  • Gonzalo Jara

    5
    0.00

    Gonzalo Jara

Replaced Thomas in added time as West Brom held on for all three points.

  • Marc-Antoine Fortune
    4
    3
    3.00

    Marc-Antoine Fortune

Replaced Cox in the 74th minute and his pace and physical strength allowed the hosts to take a more direct approach.

  • Pepe Reina
    40
    9
    3.50

    Pepe Reina

By far the busier of the two goalkeepers and had to make flying saves to deny Reid, Cox and Odemwingie as West Brom created the bulk of the chances. Loses a mark for conceding the penalty for the winner after a clear trip on Odemwingie.

  • Jamie Carragher
    20
    24
    2.50

    Jamie Carragher

Played in an uncomfortable right-back position and lack of pace horribly exposed by Thomas and Odemwingie as West Brom targeted that area.

  • Martin Skrtel
    47
    6
    3.50

    Martin Skrtel

Bullet header from a corner five minutes after the re-start gave Liverpool the lead against the run of play. The visitors' best defender on the afternoon and made some important last-gasp challenges - although he was lucky not to head into his own net on one occasion in the first half.

  • Daniel Agger
    30
    9
    3.00

    Daniel Agger

The Danish defender lasted 24 minutes before he limped off with an apparent knee injury. Had looked comfortable until that moment, both as centre-back and then on the left side following Johnson's injury.

  • Glen Johnson
    21
    4
    3.00

    Glen Johnson

Afternoon came to a premature end as he was substituted in the eighth minute with a hamstring injury.

  • Jay Spearing
    9
    33
    2.50

    Jay Spearing

The youngster worked hard but lacked composure in his touch against West Brom's hassling and harrying.

  • Lucas Leiva
    17
    27
    2.50

    Lucas Leiva

Solid performance from the Brazilian to celebrate his new contract but was unable to really stamp his authority on the game as Liverpool were overrun in midfield.

  • Raúl Meireles
    18
    15
    2.50

    Raúl Meireles

The Portuguese playmaker's main threat was his set-piece delivery, one of which led to the opening goal. He showed some touches of class but sometimes seemed reluctant to fully commit to challenges. Has a good understanding with Suarez and fired one chance just over the crossbar from inside the penalty area.

  • Dirk Kuyt
    15
    20
    3.00

    Dirk Kuyt

The Dutchman played on the right and constantly tracked back to help Carragher against the threat of Thomas. Had few opportunities to make an impact on the game in the final third but saw early header smothered by Carson.

  • Andy Carroll
    19
    32
    2.50

    Andy Carroll

The £35m man played the full 90 minutes but cut a frustrated figure for most of the game. Offers an excellent option as a target but his lack of pace and subtlety made him easy to deal with.

  • Luis Suárez
    67
    6
    3.50

    Luis Suárez

The Uruguayan looked the most likely player to make something happen for the visitors as he moved into dangerous positions and showed excellent vision, skill and dribbling ability. Two wonderful late efforts were somehow kept out by West Brom.

Substitutions

  • Sotirios Kyrgiakos
    18
    54
    2.50

Sotirios Kyrgiakos Flop of the Match

Absolute nightmare for the Greek defender, who replaced Johnson in the eighth minute. Conceded the first penalty after a clumsy challenge on Odemwingie and failed to deal with a high ball in the build-up to the second spot-kick.

  • Danny Wilson
    34
    10
    3.00

    Danny Wilson

Replaced Agger in the 24th minute and generally solid at left-back, although he could have offered more support going forward.

  • Joe Cole
    9
    19
    0.00

    Joe Cole

Replaced Kuyt in the 87th minute but had no impact on the game.
