Live Commentary

  • In a game that was largely void of real quality Spurs were able to create two magic moments from their star wide men to fashion three points. Newcastle showed plenty of endeavour but were unable to provide any cutting edge. Spurs move into fourth position ahead of Chelsea while Newcastle remain mid-table.
  • 90' + 1'
Spurs happy to go forward if allowed the space and Jenas once again drives towards the Newcastle goal before trying to curl the ball into far post. Krul scrambles as the ball goes just wide.
  • 89'
White Hart Line show its voice as the fans are already celebrating three points as the game begins to peter out.
  • 87'
Newcastle gamely trying to go forward but their overall quality today just hasn't been there.
  • 84'
With the three points now assured, Redknapp will be desperate to keep a first clean sheet since the opening day of the season against Manchester City.
  • 82'
    Yellow Card Andy Carroll
  • 81'
    Assist Luka Modric
  • 81'
    Goal Gareth Bale
  • 81'
GOOOOAAAALLLL!! What a blistering goal that is by Gareth Bale. In a promising position Carroll loses out to Modric who drives into the Newcastle half before setting Bale free who weaves left and right before unleashing a shot from an extremely tight angle which goes into the bottom corner. Perfect execution of counter attacking football.
  • 79'
    SubstitutionCheikh Tiote Peter Lovenkrands
  • 79'
Barton really has had an awful afternoon. Nothing has gone right for the stand-in skipper. He has the ball and tries to pry open the Spurs defence with a through ball for Carroll but his pass is woefully too strong and it goes out for a throw in.
  • 76'
The counter attack is most certainly what Spurs are playing for. Lennon goes extremely close to extending his and Spurs' tally for the afternoon. Jenas drove towards the Newcastle box before releasing Lennon in a very similar position to where he scored the goal and he tried to do the same thing but this time the ball goes just wide.
  • 75'
Spurs content to sit a little deeper now and wait to catch Newcastle on the counter with the pace of Lennon and Bale.
  • 72'
SubstitutionRafael van der Vaart Peter Crouch
  • 72'
If the result stays the same here for Spurs they will move above the faltering champions Chelsea into fourth position and their title push would be very much on.
  • 69'
Spurs had to contend with going down to ten men against Aston Villa and Redknapp will be hoping his team holds out for the win. It's doubtful that this will be the last card of the game.
  • 67'
    SubstitutionJonas Gutierrez Nile Ranger
  • 67'
    SubstitutionRoman Pavlyuchenko S. Bassong
  • 65'
    Yellow/Red Younes Kaboul
  • 65'
Kaboul has been sent off!!! Just after saying Tiote could have been sent off a few times he is involved in another contraversial incident. Kaboul reacts angrily to a Tiote challenge and squares up to the Ivorian before looking to head butt the midfielder. There wasn't any force on the head butt but the referee had very little choice but to show the red card. Big moment in the game this.
  • 64'
Tiote could have been sent off three or four times over this afternoon again clips the heels of Modric but the referee says nothing doing. He really is walking a tight rope at the moment.
  • 61'
Confidence is oozing from the Spurs players now after that goal. Pavlyuchenko controls on the edge of the box and slides the ball to Modric who shoots low towards the corner which Krul does well to get across to save.
  • 60'
Harry Redknapp had Crouch warming up just before goal but unsurprisingly the England striker has been told to sit down for now.
  • 59'
    Yellow Card Alan Smith
  • 57'
    Assist Younes Kaboul
  • 57'
    Goal Aaron Lennon
  • 57'
GGGOOOOAAAALLLL!!! What a brilliant finish that is from Aaron Lennon. Kaboul finds the winger on the right hand side, he is given far too much space by Perch. Lennon takes the opportunity to drive into the box and from a wide angle Lennon powers the ball into the far bottom corner. What an excellent goal and now Newcastle must respond in an attacking sense.
  • 54'
The game is beginning to open up now as Spurs push for an opener. Newcastle looking to draw the home team onto them so they can catch them out on the counter attack.
  • 52'
    Yellow Card Jonas Gutierrez
  • 51'
    Yellow Card Younes Kaboul
  • 51'
Barton incurs the wrath of the Spurs fans as he hits a drop ball out for a throw in, which was his version of giving the ball back to Spurs. He does love to be the pantomime villain wherever he goes.
  • 49'
Barton, captaining the side in place of Kevin Nolan, is usually a master from set pieces but today his radar has been very poor. This was again highlighted as a free kick from the right hand side is way over hit and goes out for a throw in.
  • 46'
    SubstitutionWilson Palacios Jermaine Jenas
  • 46'
A change has been made in the middle of the park for Spurs as expected. Jenas replaces Palacios who will provider more of a passing role than perhaps Palacios did.
  • 45' + 1'
What a save from Krul. Hutton crosses in for Pavlyuchenko whose header is powerfully struck towards the corner and looked goalbound only for Krul to somehow get across one-handed and save it onto the post before the ball trickled along the line to hit the other post. Excellent end to the half which was the final play of the first half.
  • 45' + 1'
Spurs dominating the closing moments of the half as Newcastle look to try and settle for 0-0 at half time.
  • 43'
The game is starting to get stretched a little as Spurs get Bale and Lennon on the ball which is when they have looked most dangerous. No end product but better play from the home side.
  • 40'
Free kick from just outside the Spurs box typifies this afternoon's action. Joey Barton strikes the ball straight at the wall and his rebound volley spoons a long way wide. Not an awful lot of quality on show this afternoon thus far.
  • 39'
    Yellow Card Wilson Palacios
  • 38'
Very little happening in the game still as errors is the major theme of the afternoon so far.
  • 35'
    Yellow Card Cheikh Tiote
  • 35'
Much better play from Spurs. Modric neatly gets into space and plays an inside ball into the path of Van der Vaart. His first touch is good but Collocini gets across to block his shot well.
  • 33'
Van der Vaart has a go from a free kick from 30 yards out and forces Krul to tip over the bar. Decent save save from the Newcastle keeper. White Hart Lane faithful beginning to show their voice.
  • 31'
Such a scrappy game at the moment as neither side can keep hold of the ball for any length of time. Newcastle working very hard to keep Tottenham quiet.
  • 28'
Bale finally gets into the game, he runs onto Van der Vaart's flick and beats Collocini before attempting to cross but Smith brilliantly gets across to block Bale's ball. The resultant corner came to nothing.
  • 27'
Modric coming deeper and deeper to try and get in the game which has bypassed him for the most part so far. Redknapp might be thinking of a change at half time.
  • 25'
First chance for Newcastle now. Tiote finds Gutierrez on the left hand side who twists and weaves waiting until the right moment to cross. When he does eventually cross the ball Carroll gets up and heads towards goal but the ball hits the roof of the net.
  • 22'
First worry of the game for Newcastle. Van der Vaart very cleverly wins a free kick wide on the left hand side. The Dutchman's ball is under the nose of Krul who drops the ball but luckily for him he is the first to react and smother the ball.
  • 19'
Both teams very wasteful in possession so far and because of that are finding it difficult to build any momentum moving forward.
  • 16'
Carroll has given away a couple of free kicks after leading with his left arm in headers. Jermaine Defoe was sent off for just that against Aston Villa and Carroll will have to be careful.
  • 15'
Chants of "You're just a small club in Arsenal" ring from the away fans as the game flatters to deceive so far.
  • 12'
Very even so far as Newcastle have responded well to some early Spurs possession. No chances in the game as of yet.
  • 9'
Newcastle looking to get the ball in the air going forward as soon as they get hold of the ball. Carroll will be a handful for Kaboul and Dawson today.
  • 7'
Taylor and Van der Vaart tussle for the ball and the Dutchman goes down clutching is face. Taylor did appear to make contact with Van der Vaart's face but it was purely accidental.
  • 5'
Spurs seeing a lot of the ball in the early exchanges. Newcastle have set up here with five men across the midfield to stifle the creativity of Spurs.
  • 3'
Cagey opening from both teams as they try and feel each other out. The gameplan from the home side looks to be to get the ball out to Lennon to run at the returning Perch.
  • 1'
Referee Anthony Taylor starts the game in front of a very loud and expectant White Hart Lane.
  • Newcastle's 3-1 Boxing Day defeat to title contenders Manchester City leaves Alan Pardew's men comfortable in the top half which would have been objective at the start of the season. Andy Carroll is the Toon's top scorer this season and he again will lead the line this time with a different support man. Kevin Nolan's suspension means that Alan Smith gets a rare start. The other change to the team sees James Perch come in for Jose Enrique.
  • Tottenham come into the game unbeaten at home in the Premier League since August and full of confidence following their 2-1 victory against Aston Villa on Boxing Day. Spurs will be looking to keep a clean sheet for the first time since the opening day of the season. The one change to the side that beat Villa is enforced due to suspension, Jermaine Defoe's sending off gives Roman Pavlyuchenko another chance to lead the line for his team.

  • Festive greetings to all and welcome to’s live commentary of Newcastle United’s visit to Tottenham. Newcastle have won their two previous trips to the capital so far this season with striker Andy Carroll scoring the winner both times. Spurs will be hoping this is not a bad omen as their unexpected title challenge looks to gather momentum.
