Real Madrid 6-1 Deportivo La Coruna - Cristiano Ronaldo brace helps Jose Mourinho's side overtake Barcelona

Portuguese forward started and ended the rout...

Real Madrid recorded a comfortable 6-1 victory over Deportivo La Coruna at the Bernabeu on Sunday evening to go third in La Liga and leap frog title rivals Barcelona.

Cristiano Ronaldo was on target twice for los Blancos, who also had Mesut Oezil, Angel Di Maria and Gonzalo Higuain on the scoresheet. Deportivo’s Ze Castro scored an own goal while Juan Rodríguez found a consolation for the visitors in the second half.

The Madrid onslaught commenced right at the start when Ronaldo headed home Ozil’s corner from close range as early as the fourth minute.

The flow of the game tempered a bit thereafter but los Blancos continued to maintain control, with Di Maria forcing Depor's goalkeeper, Manu, into a good save.

The second Madrid goal came on 23 minutes when Ozil found himself at the end of a brilliant Madrid move that had Ronaldo at the heart of it. The Portuguese forward slipped the ball to Higuain on the edge of the Depor penalty area, who then played a pass into the German international, who in turn, made it 2-0 with a sweet strike.

Three minutes after the half-hour mark, Di Maria added Madrid’s third with a header. Xabi Alonso released Higuain down the left wing and the Argentina international whipped in a delightful cross that Di Maria nodded in.

Madrid could have added to their tally in the closing stages of the first half had Ronaldo been more accurate.

Lassad Nouioui forced Iker Casillas into making a good save as the second half resumed, but thereafter it was about Madrid all over again.

Higuain, who had provided the assists in two of the earlier goals, etched his name on the scoresheet in the early minutes of the second session. Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos combined in front of the Deportivo penalty area and the Madrid right-back spread the ball wide to Di Maria, whose cross was tucked in the Argentine.

Seven minutes later on the hour mark Ze Castro summed up Deportivo’s evening when he shot past Manu into his own net while tying to stop a dangerous run from Marcelo.

Deportivo pulled one back on 78 minutes when Juan Rodriguez headed home an Adrian cross from close range.

There was still enough time for Ronaldo to score his second goal of the evening and his fourth of the league championship this season. After receiving an Alonso pass on the right the former Manchester United winger galloped with the ball and shot home with his left-foot from close range.

The most impressive victory under Jose Mourinho to date propels Madrid to third in the table with 14 points from six matches, just two behind leaders Valencia and one ahead of fourth-placed Barcelona.

On the other hand, Deportivo are at the foot of the table with just three points and no wins.
