Newcastle United destroyed their neighbours in the Tyne-Wear derby, securing a 5-1 victory over Sunderland. Kevin Nolan grabbed a hat-trick as Shola Ameobi scored twice for the Magpies. Former Newcastle United defender Titus Bramble was sent off as the hosts went on to complete a rout.

Newcastle had an early chance to take the lead from a Joey Barton corner as Simon Mignolet came to punch but missed the ball. Sunderland managed to clear and broke on the counter with Danny Welbeck picking up possession in midfield after a Steed Malbranque challenge.

Welbeck ran down the middle unchallenged but failed to get his head up to spot Darren Bent bursting free to his left. Instead, the Manchester United loanee went for goal, and saw his shot blocked on the right-hand edge of the penalty area.

The hosts had a penalty claim waved away on 18 minutes. Danny Simpson sent a long ball over the top of the Sunderland defence after spotting a run forward by Andy Carroll. Newcastle's No.9 controlled on his chest and entered the penalty area with Michael Turner breathing down his neck. Carroll went down as Bramble came in to challenge, and replays showed the former Newcastle defender won the ball cleanly.

Newcastle had another chance to take the lead on 24 minutes, after Barton's corner was met at the far post by a strong Carroll header. Mignolet managed to get a firm right hand to the header but could only divert it back across his own goal. Fabricio Coloccini threw himself at it with a diving header but couldn't connect before Shola Ameobi swung a boot at it to send it wide of Mignolet's left-hand post.

Newcastle continued the pressure as Barton stuck from long range to force Mignolet into a good left-handed save to push the ball wide for a corner. This was swung into the far post where it ricocheted off a couple of heads before landing in front of Nolan. The captain wet for an overhead kick and it came off, sending the ball into the roof of the net to give Newcastle the lead.

The hosts had a second goal on 34 minutes and it was Nolan for a second time. Jonas Gutierrez drove infield from the left wing and went for goal from the edge of the penalty area. His shot was blocked and squirmed to the right-hand side of the goal where Carroll tried an audacious scissor kick. It didn't come off as planned, as it went straight to the unmarked Nolan who controlled before placing it into the bottom right-hand corner of Sunderland's goal.

Newcastle weren't done there, as Gutierrez was brought down by Nedum Onuoha after a driving run into the left-hand side of the box. Ameobi stepped up to take it and hammered it into the bottom left-hand corner of the goal - it was unstoppable.

Captain marvel | Nolan bags hat-trick as Newcastle annihilate Black Cats

The nightmare continued for Sunderland as Bramble was sent off early in the second half. Carroll raced down the left flank and was about to burst into the penalty area as Bramble came in with a last ditch challenge. He got it wrong, scything down Carroll and was given his marching orders by Dowd.

Newcastle refused to let off the gas and extended their lead on 70 minutes. Simpson drove down the right flank and whipped in a cross that Carroll rattled off the crossbar. Ameobi was the quickest to react, and followed up with an emphatic finish to add to Sunderland's misery.

It was 5-0 five minutes later. Newcastle had a corner that was sent to the near post. It was knocked-on by a completely unmarked Ameobi before being headed in at the back post by Nolan to give the captain his hat-trick.

Bent managed to get one back for the Black Cats before the game was up. A corner found its way to the edge of the box where it was fired back towards goal. Tim Krul went to collect the shot, but Bent nipped in ahead of the keeper to divert the ball into the back of the net.

It was nothing more than a consolation goal, and Newcastle went on to win 5-1, with fans chanting "we beat the scum 5-1" as they left the stadium.
