Player Ratings: Fulham 2-0 Wigan Athletic

By Alex Dimond at Craven Cottage

    Mark Schwarzer

Tested early by N'Zogbia, the Australian passed those tests and then enjoyed a relatively unhurried afternoon's work.

  • Chris Baird

    Chris Baird

Found Dempsey with a fine cross to allow the American to fire home Fulham's second of the game just before half-time. Defensively he made no errors of note — always a positive for the position.

  • Brede Hangeland

    Brede Hangeland

Missed a good early opportunity when his height afforded him an opportunity in the box, but his main duties as usual were defensive and he performed them with reasonable aplomb.

  • Aaron Hughes

    3.00

    Aaron Hughes

Dependable performance from the veteran, who was rarely challenged by Rodallega — especially in the first half.

  • C. Salcido
    10

    3.50

    C. Salcido

One of the game's star performers, Salcido covered a lot of ground and made a major impact for his side at both ends of the pitch. He could have added to his opening assist had his strikers been even more ruthless, and did well to silence Charles N'Zogbia — for a long time Wigan's only attacking threat.

  • Simon Davies

    Simon Davies

Workrate from the Welshman was impressive, and on the ball he was often effective — even if, on occasions, he looked to pass when perhaps he could have taken it on himself.

  • Danny Murphy

    3.00

    Danny Murphy

Not the former Liverpool man's most memorable game, he sat deep in midfield and helped provide the foundation for Gera to take the majority of the midfield impetus .

  • Jonathan Greening
    2
    0
    3.00

    Jonathan Greening

The water-carrier of the midfield, Greening rarely found himself in a position to make a difference going forward but was a willing runner and worker to ensure a goal was not conceded.

  • Clint Dempsey

Clint Dempsey Top of the Match

The cutting edge of the game, his goals were the difference in victory for his side who otherwise seemed to lack for some intent in front of goal. Dempsey's workrate was as impressive as his finishing, and he deserved his two finely taken efforts.

  • Zoltán Gera
    2
    0
    3.50

    Zoltán Gera

The brains behind the all-important opening goal, spotting Salcido's rampaging run and finding the Mexican with ease. Missed a handful of chances of his own to get on the scoresheet, but Mark Hughes wil probably forgive him for that.

  • Mousa Dembele
    4
    0
    3.00

    Mousa Dembele

A hard-working runner, but perhaps needs to learn the physicality of the Premier League again after his recent injury layoff. Looked a bit timid in the challenge, and consequently failed to create too many chances for himself, but his touch was assured and his interplay with team-mates clever.

Substitutions

  • Kagisho Dikgacoi

    Kagisho Dikgacoi

    Late replacement for Murphy.

  • Andy Johnson

    Andy Johnson

Late substitute appearance, but had enough time to nearly win two penalties and make his impact felt. Promising after long injury layoff.

  • Ali Al Habsi

    Ali Al Habsi

Early flap at a corner was a bad omen of things to come, but the Omani composed himself to put on a decent display. Could do little for either of Dempsey's goals, but did make one breath-taking save to claw away another header that deserved the applause it got.

  • Ronnie Stam

    3.00

    Ronnie Stam

Nothing to write home about for the Dutchman, who enjoyed a relatively easy second half but was beaten all ends up by Salcido for much of the game.

  • Gary Caldwell

    2
    3.00

    Gary Caldwell

The Scot was not at his best against the clever movement of Dempsey and Dembele. Marshalled the backline as best he could, but will be disappointed with how things panned out.

  • Antolín Alcaraz
    0
    1
    3.00

    Antolín Alcaraz

Played in a somewhat erratic manner, seeming to lose concentration on occasions when it was perhaps best he didn't. But when he was on form he dealt with problems with some conviction.

  • Maynor Figueroa
    0
    0
    3.00

    Maynor Figueroa

An under-par afternoon for the highly rated Honduran, who was clearly his side's classiest defender without reaching the heights he is capable of.

  • H. Thomas
    0
    1
    2.50

    H. Thomas

Not quite the dominant force in midfield his side needed him to be.

  • Mohamed Diame
    1
    1
    3.00

    Mohamed Diame

Showed good workrate throughout the 90 minutes, but was frequently beaten to the ball defensively. Went close with one solid effort early in the second half.

  • Tom Cleverley
    5
    1
    3.00

    Tom Cleverley

Looked a bit bemused by the pace and power of the early proceedings, but grew into the game and, after second half tactical changes, became a major influence going forward as the Latics tried to create something.

  • Charles N'Zogbia
    0
    1
    3.00

    Charles N'Zogbia

His side's most dangerous attacking threat throughout — although that is hardly saying much.

  • Hugo Rodallega
    0
    1
    2.50

Hugo Rodallega Flop of the Match

Non-existent in the first half (where he was playing from the left), he grew into the game slightly when played through the middle for the second 45.

  • Franco Di Santo
    3
    0
    2.50

    Franco Di Santo

Withdrawn at half-time as Martinez looked to change the game, the Argentine youngster had some nice touches in the first half without ever really looking like causing Hangeland problems.

Substitutions

  • Jordi Gómez

    Jordi Gómez

Brought on for ineffective Di Santo. No improvement.

  • Victor Moses
    3
    0
    3.00

    Victor Moses

Late substitute, had some flashes of inspiration that nearly helped his side back into the game.
