Couldn't be faulted for either of Wigan's goals and dealt with crosses into the box confidently.
Got forward to good effect and combined well with Gutierrez. Solid in his defensive duties as well.
Poor performance. Inaccurate with his crosses when he did get forward and was tormented by N'Zogbia throughout. Completely lost the Frenchman for the second goal.
Composed performance, read the play well and got across to disturb Wigan's attacks. An accomplished showing.
A suspect touch nearly let McCarthy in on goal in the first half and was out-jumped by the much shorter N'Zogbia for the opening goal.
Has a good reading of the game, gets himself into good defensive positions and always seems to find the right pass. Robust in the challenge.
Gave the ball away in the build-up to Wigan's crucial second goal and was at times wasteful with his passing. Didn't get forward enough in support of his attackers.
Lively performance, some good movement and intelligent passing. Sometimes guilty of failing to track back and cover his full back. Wasted a free-kick in the second half.
Largely anonymous in the first half. Had two half chances but couldn't make the most of the opportunities - failed to get a shot off on goal on either ocassion.
Made a couple of good runs in behind the opposition backline but the pass never reached him. Had the ball in the back of the net but handled it to steal it off Al-Habsi. Missed a late chance.
Ali Al Habsi
Good early save to deny Carroll, did well to claim crosses and was untroubled by Carroll's challenges.
Prepared to get back and cover for his full back, intervening with some well time challenges.
Solid contribution, was in a good position to clear from a Carroll header in the first half. Dealt well with Gutierrez's runs down the left flank.
Has quickly acclimitised to the requirements of the Premier League. Made a couple of key headers to cut out balls over the top, and looked comfortable alongside Caldwell.
Restricted Newcastle down the right flank, ensured that neither Guthrie or Routledge had a major impact on the game.
A good piece of pressure almost saw the youngster get in behind the Newcastle defence, but Krul did well to deny the 19-year-old. Didn't look out of his depth without making a big impact.
Revelled in the animosity of the crowd and delivered two very well taken goals in the first half to silence the Geordie faithful. Wigan's main attacking threat.
Brilliant sliding tackle to deny Lovenkrands following a slip from Alcaraz. Had a quiet game but made good interventions when required.
Didn't see much of the ball, dropping deep to try and collect possession. But was himself guilty of some sloppy passes.
F. Di Santo
Good shift down the channels, worked tirelessly for his side and provided two quality balls into the box for both of N'Zogbia's goals.
- 33 O. Söderberg
- 28 T. Kádár
- 16 R. Taylor
Replaced Guthrie as Newcastle looked to chase the game.
A late introduction in place of Perch. Had no impact.
- 17 A. Smith
On for Lovenkrands with half an hour to play and gave Newcastle an extra dimension. Took his header well and troubled the Wigan backline with his movement.
- C. Kirkland
Replaced N'Zogbia in the final moments of the game.
- 8 B. Watson
- 11 V. Moses
On for Ronnie Stam and barely had a touch.
- 9 M. Boselli
Didn't see much of the ball and didn't have the chance to influence the game. Made economical use of possession of the few ocassions he did see it.
