By Eliot Rothwell at Goodison Park

  • Tim Howard

    Tim Howard

The Everton 'keeper made a number of smart saves throughout the game. He looked commanding and marshalled his defence excellently as his bellows could be heard from the stands.

  • Tony Hibbert

    2.50

    Tony Hibbert

Consistent throughout, Hibbert endeavoured to get forward during his first-half spell but was replaced by the attack-minded Coleman at half-time.

  • Phil Jagielka

    Phil Jagielka

The England international looked shaky throughout as Andy Carroll's aerial ability caused him and Distin a number of problems.

  • Sylvain Distin

    3.00

    Sylvain Distin

Whilst winning a number of aerial battles the centre-back made little impact on the ground. A hanging Newcastle cross in the second-half nearly resulted in an own goal as Distin lazily stuck out a leg.

  • Leighton Baines
    3
    1
    3.50

    Leighton Baines

Consistent but ineffectual, Baines attempted to bomb forward on more than one occasion but was restricted in his impact on the left side.

  • Leon Osman
    3
    2
    3.00

    Leon Osman

The midfielder was handed a start by David Moyes and whilst looking bright at the beginning he gave the ball away too often.

  • Mikel Arteta
    3
    1
    2.50

    Mikel Arteta

The pressing of the Newcastle midfield stifled his creativity as the Spaniard largely failed to assert himself on the general play.

  • John Heitinga
    2
    1
    3.00

    John Heitinga

The Dutchman sat in-front of the Everton defence all afternoon. He gave a steady performance but allowed Hatem Ben Arfa the space to shoot and score in the first-half.

  • Steven Pienaar
    2
    1
    3.50

    Steven Pienaar

Occupying the left side of the midfield, Pienaar had an early effort blocked by Williamson. Looked to create opportunities during the second half but was stifled by Newcastle

  • Marouane Fellaini
    5
    3
    3.50

    Marouane Fellaini

Gave the ball away on countless occasions during the first half but grew into the game, causing the Newcastle defence problems in the air.

  • Jermaine Beckford
    3
    6
    2.50

Jermaine Beckford Flop of the Match

Gifted a start by David Moyes, Beckford failed to have a telling impact and was substituted at half-time for Yakubu.

Substitutions

  • Seamus Coleman

    4
    2.50

    Seamus Coleman

Brought on at half-time to foray forward, Coleman adequately supported his midfield pressing the Newcastle defence further back and opening up the midfield for his counterparts.

  • Aiyegbeni Yakubu
    2
    2
    3.00

    Aiyegbeni Yakubu

Came on as a half-time substitute and caused the Newcastle defence problems. Went close on one occasion but Tim Krul was equal to the effort.

  • Stephen Harper
    5
    1
    3.00

    Stephen Harper

The Newcastle 'keeper had relatively little to do during his 35 minutes on the pitch. His substitution came about due to an injury sustained from a dangerous Jermaine Beckford tackle. Harper hit the ground hard and immediately pointed to his shoulder before being stretchered off.

  • Fabricio Coloccini
    4
    3
    3.00

    Fabricio Coloccini

Won a few headers at the back for Newcastle but the Argentinean leaves spectators with that lingering sense of doubt whenever he has the ball at his feet. Beckford's pace caused him problems on occasion.

  • Mike Williamson
    6
    2
    3.00

    Mike Williamson

Made a number of crucial challenges at the heart of the Newcastle defence, blocking a Steven Pienaar effort early on and shepherding Everton's attacking midfielders well.

  • José Enrique
    9
    1
    3.50

    José Enrique

Made a number of useful forays forward including a weak effort at Tim Howard's goal. The Spaniard was caught out of position, however, by the clever running of Leon Osman, gifting Everton a scoring chance.

  • Wayne Routledge
    6
    4
    2.50

    Wayne Routledge

Fairly anonymous for large spells of the game, the winger rarely managed to disrupt the Everton defence. His crossing was sporadic, at best.

  • Cheikh Tiote
    23
    2
    4.00

Cheikh Tiote Top of the Match

Looked assured on his debut. The midfielder made numerous strides forward in the rain, causing the Everton midfield problems as his excellent distribution created a number of Newcastle moves.

  • Joey Barton
    17
    2
    3.50

    Joey Barton

The former Manchester City man was key to the Newcastle performance. His endeavour pinned back the creative Arteta as the Spaniard rarely broke forward.

  • Hatem Ben Arfa
    30
    -1
    3.50

    Hatem Ben Arfa

The on-loan midfielder received a warm welcome from the travelling Newcastle faithful and he didn't let them down. The Frenchman made a number of first-half runs into the box, culminating in a ferocious effort that whistled past the stranded Tim Howard and into the top corner of the net.

  • Kevin Nolan
    9
    3
    3.00

    Kevin Nolan

The tireless running of the former Bolton player disrupted Everton's attacking flow. He and Barton combined well to keep the likes of Osman and Arteta quiet.

  • Andy Carroll
    8
    2
    3.00

    Andy Carroll

Tall, rangy and possessing a devilish jump, Andy Carroll causes problems to whatever defence he is facing. Today was no different.

Substitutions

  • Tim Krul
    14
    1
    3.00

    Tim Krul

Looked assured when called upon as the stand-in for the injured Steve Harper.
