Robert Green Flop of the Match

Visions of World Cup error returned as he was at fault for Chelsea’s second after he spilled Drogba’s free-kick with Kalou eventually scoring. The rest of his game was free from any faults.

  • Matthew Upson
    13
    11
    2.50

    Matthew Upson

Was partly to blame for Chelsea’s second goal, he had enough time to put the ball out for a corner or a throw but instead the England international elected to smash his clearance against Saloman Kalou. He looked uncomfortable alongside Tal Ben Haim and Avram Grant may need to play the two together more often in order for the partnership to work.

  • Tal Ben Haim

    10
    2.50

    Tal Ben Haim

Looked uneasy against his former club and the partnership with Matthew Upson was not effective. His clearances form the back were mostly aimless and his lack of composure hindered West Ham when they needed to attack with precision.

  • Lars Jacobsen

    Lars Jacobsen

The Dane struggled with the overlapping runs of Ashley Cole but he passed the ball well and showed good composure to avoid aimless clearances.

  • H. Ilunga

    H. Ilunga

Coped reasonably well at left-back. The defender had little to do in defence but he would have been reluctant to join West Ham’s attack for fear of being exposed.

  • Scott Parker
    15
    9
    3.00

    Scott Parker

Struggled to have full control against his former side. Alongside Mark Noble, he was overrun by the visitor’s midfield trio and subsequently failed to make an impact in attack. The midfielder took his goal well in the second half.

  • Mark Noble
    6
    7
    2.50

    Mark Noble

Struggled to cope with Chelsea’s trio of midfielders in the first half. With Parker dropping further back to quash the visitor’s attack, it left Noble isolated and the 23-year-old was not able to run West Ham’s engine room on his own.

  • Valon Behrami
    5
    7
    3.00

    Valon Behrami

The midfielder was fairly anonymous in the first half. In the second 45 the Switzerland international was more industrious and having tucked inside to help out the stranded Mark Noble, he managed to have more of an impact in the game.

  • Boa Morte
    3
    4
    2.50

    Boa Morte

Tracked back well and surprisingly headed the ball to safety during a number of Chelsea attacks. Going forward he struggled against his opposite number Paulo Ferreira. Subbed at half-time.

  • Victor Nsofor Obinna
    24
    6
    3.50

    Victor Nsofor Obinna

He was the brightest spark for West Ham. His runs were purposeful and he showed a good range of passing. He looks a promising signing but he lacked cohesion with Carlton Cole, which is a worrying sign for Avram Grant.

  • Carlton Cole
    3
    7
    3.00

    Carlton Cole

Despite winning his fair share of headers, the striker had a torrid time against his former club. Having a goal ruled out for offside has summed up his season thus far. Avram Grant may be partly to blame for Cole’s subdued performance after the Israeli decided to drop Obinna back into an attacking-midfielder role, which left the England international isolated.

Substitutions

  • Kieron Dyer

    4
    3.00

    Kieron Dyer

Looked tired near the end of the second half, despite only coming on as a substitute at half-time. His range of passing was good, however.

  • Frédéric Piquionne
    6
    8
    2.50

    Frédéric Piquionne

Missed a glorious chance towards the end after coming on as a substitute.

  • Petr Cech

    3.00

    Petr Cech

Dealt with everything with relative ease and was not at fault for West Ham’s consolation goal.

  • Paulo Ferreira
    37
    3
    3.00

    Paulo Ferreira

Had little to do at right-back in a defensive capacity, but he provided a peach of a cross to set up Chelsea’s third goal.

  • John Terry
    49
    4
    3.00

    John Terry

Coped with any attacking threat well and looked composed when distributing the ball. Carlton Cole was not much of a match for the Chelsea captain.

  • Branislav Ivanovic
    48
    3
    3.00

    Branislav Ivanovic

Had little to do in the heart of Chelsea’s defence. Questions could be raised regarding whether he is now a better right-back than a centre-back.

  • Ashley Cole
    53
    4
    3.50

    Ashley Cole

Another solid performance from the left-back. Attacked and defended well, making no errors. He will be a big part of Chelsea’s potential success this season.

  • Ramires
    69
    5
    3.00

    Ramires

A promising full debut from the midfielder. He ran Chelsea's engine room well alongside Essien and looked comfortable in possession.

  • Michael Essien
    105
    8
    3.50

Michael Essien Top of the Match

Controlled the game efficiently alongside Ramires. He took his header well, as well as adding a second to put the Blues three up, and has firmly established his place in the Chelsea side after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

  • John Obi Mikel
    71
    5
    3.50

    John Obi Mikel

Had little to do in the defensive midfield role. But he looked comfortable in possession.

  • Salomon Kalou
    42
    7
    3.00

    Salomon Kalou

Didn’t know too much about his goal thanks to Matthew Upson. Carlo Ancelotti was gesturing several times to the Ivorian during the game, telling him to pull wide. His positioning needs improvement.

  • Nicolas Anelka
    47
    6
    3.00

    Nicolas Anelka

Was a threat when he was running with the ball. West Ham struggled to keep track of him and subsequently chopped him down with several rash challenges.

  • Didier Drogba
    48
    4
    3.00

    Didier Drogba

Held the ball up well and created an ample outlet for the visitors.

    Had little chance to impress.

  • Gäel Kakuta
