Steve Gerrard gave England the lead just four minutes in but Robert Green will make the headlines, palming the ball into his own goal from Clint Dempsey's ambitious strike from 25 yards out. The USA will be pleased with a point but there are still questions over England. A poor mistake from Green will no doubt throw into question whether he will face Algeria next week. So that's it then, a point for both sides in the Group C opener. Thanks for joining me tonight.

England continue to press for a goal late on but USA's five-man midfield look difficult to break down. Terry launches the ball forward towards Crouch and he is onside by two yards but is wrongly ruled to be in an offside position by the assistant referee.

Four minutes of added time in Rustenburg. It looks like the game will be a draw now but there's always a chance England could grab a late winner or could a USA player make themselves the modern day Joe Gaetjens?

Half-chance for Donovan. Buddle makes his first major contribution and lays the ball off to Donovan who steadies himself before firing right-footed at goal but his powerful effort lacks accuracy and sails well over the bar.

Bob Bradley makes another change now. Jozy Altidore comes on and is replaced by Bolton Wanderers midfielder Stuart Holden. A midfielder on for a striker so expect Holden to line up in the centre of midfield alongside Bradley and Clark.

Lampard plays a clever through ball to Lennon on the right side of the USA area and continues his run into the box. He then receives the return pass from the Spurs winger but can't quite strike at goal as Onyewu slides the ball away.

Rooney drives forward from deep as he is so good at doing but is nudged by Onyewu and is awarded a free-kick. Gerrard takes the set-piece but after the playing a short pass to Lampard, the move breaks down and the USA regain possession.

Wright-Phillips receives the ball on the left wing and clips a cross into the area and Crouch has a chance just a minute after coming on but can only loop his header straight into the arms of Howard.

Fabio Capello makes his final change now, bringing on Peter Crouch for Emile Heskey. Straight swap for England and Crouch will be looking to add to his 21 goals for his country.

Heskey has the latest chance for England. Gerrard whips in an inch-perfect cross to Heskey around eight yards out but he can only header the ball over the bar under pressure from Onyewu. Meanwhile, Edson Buddle has come on to replace Robbie Findley for the USA.

IT'S WRIGHT-PHILLIPS NOW! A number of passes are played across the edge of the USA penalty area and Wright-Phillips is found in space on the left wide of the area but his right-footed curling effort is palmed away by Howard.

ROONEY WITH ANOTHER CHANCE!! Lampard plays a short pass to his left to Rooney 30 yards out and the England striker takes a touch before unleashing a fierce right-footed strike toward the top right-hand corner but the ball flies just wide. Good effort from Rooney, he had Howard scrambling across goal!

ROONEY WITH A HEADER FOR ENGLAND! Gerrard curls a wonderful ball over the USA defence to an unmarked Rooney at the far post but he can't quite get enough on the ball to direct it towards goal and heads the ball out for a throw-in. A difficult header for Rooney to perfect - the ball cross was just too high.

Wright-Phillips receives a pass from Lennon on the edge of the area but takes his time to get the ball under control and is dispossessed by Bradley. The ball falls to Rooney but Cherundolo puts in an important challenge to smash the ball away.

Heskey is bundled to the ground 30 yards out from goal and England are awarded a free-kick. Lampard steps up and has that look in his eyes as if he is about to rifle the ball into the top corner. However, the Chelsea midfielder smashes the ball right-footed well over the crossbar, earning ironic applause around the stadium.

GREEN MAKES A GREAT SAVE FROM ALTIDORE! The ball falls to Altidore around six yards out towards the left side of the England penalty area and turns sharply before striking towards the near post. However, Green is there to push the ball onto the frame of the goal and the ball is promptly cleared by England. Good save from Green but he's not redeemed himself yet!

GOOD EFFORT FROM LAMPARD! Ashley Cole plays the ball inside to Lampard 30 yards out and he jinks onto his left foot past Bradley and fires at goal from the edge of the area. Howard looks as though he is about to catch the ball but palms the ball over the bar. The Jabulani ball playing it's part there?

Carragher a minute ago, and now Gerrard goes into the book for a mistimed challenge on Findley. Donovan steps up to deliver the resulting free-kick from the left but Bocangera diverts the ball well wide of the goal off his shoulder.

Findley breaks down the left wing and is quickly closed down by Gerrard and Carragher, but the latter goes in a little to hastily on the pacey striker and picks up a booking for a late challenge.

Heskey involved again now. It seems playing the ball to the big target man is plan A today. This time, he flicks the ball onto Rooney from a goal-kick from Green but the Manchester United striker can't latch onto it and the ball rolls through to Howard.

Howard launches the ball up field and Terry gets in front of Altidore to hack the ball away. Bradley then picks up possession and picks out Donovan on the right wing but he is quickly closed down by Ashley Cole who does well to intercept and clear the ball out of play.

A great chance for Heskey to score there. The big man is having a good game tonight, partnering Rooney up front. Today is his first start for almost three months, but you wouldn't think that on his efforts so far.

HESKEY GOES CLOSE FOR ENGLAND!! Lennon plays an excellent through ball into the path of Heskey 30 yards out and the centre forward is in acres of space and takes a touch before firing powerfully towards goal but his right-footed effort from the edge of the area is straight at Howard, who claims the ball well.

Half-chance for England. Lennon skips past Bocanegra with ease down the right side of the USA penalty area and cuts the ball into the box towards Rooney. The cut back is behind Rooney who, from six yards out, can't quite manage to divert the ball towards goal.

First USA booking of the game and it's DeMerit. The former Watford defender handles the ball when going up for a header with Heskey. No need to do that and he deservedly picks up a yellow card.

Wright-Phillips is in the thick of it in the first couple of minutes of this second half. He's bundled to the ground on the left wing and wins a free-kick before earning another free-kick moments later. Lampard's inswinging cross finds Terry but his ambitious header from the edge of the area is straight at Howard.

England kick us off for the second half. One change at the break from Fabio Capello with Jamie Carragher coming on in the place of Ledley King.

Half-time. England 1-1 USA. Steven Gerrard put England ahead after good work between Wayne Rooney and Emile Heskey on the edge of the area but a howler from Robert Green is what has got the USA back into it. Clint Dempsey was the goalscorer but Green's mistake is the major talking point heading into half-time.

Donovan plays a quick throw-in to Altidore just inside the penalty area next to the byline and the USA striker looks to skip past Terry but can't find a way past the centre-back. He then falls to ground and looks for a penalty but the referee is having none of it.

Three minutes of added time in this first half...

What a terrible moment in Green's career. The West Ham man looked as though he had the ball under control when he looked to gather it but somehow let it run past him. It's Scott Carson all over again for England!

GOAL!!! THE USA ARE BACK IN IT!! TERRIBLE MISTAKE FROM GREEN!! DEMPSEY THE SCORER!! Dempsey dwells on the ball around 25 yards out from goal and he manages to find a way past Lampard to fire low towards goal. His weak effort looks certain to roll into the arms of Green but the bal somehow squirms past the England keeper and rolls into the goal. 1-1!!

Chance for Wright-Phillips. Rooney fires a great cross-field ball to the Manchester City man on the left wing and he cuts inside past Dempsey to strike right-footed towards the top right-hand corner but the ball sails a couple of yards wide of Howard's post.

England are in possession in defence and King picks up the ball under pressure from Altidore and after trying to find his centre-back partner Terry, the USA striker sticks out his hand and concedes a silly free-kick.

Wright-Phillips combines with Ashley Cole down the left wing and picks out the Chelsea full-back on the left side on the USA area. He then tries to cut the ball back but a number of USA players are in the box and they quickly get the ball clear.

Ambitious strike from Altidore. A USA throw-in from the left is flicked on by Findley into the feet of Altidore 30 yards out from goal and he takes a touch before firing the ball right-footed towards the bottom right-hand corner but the effort is far too weak to trouble Green in the England goal.

Here's a surprise from Fabio Capello. James Milner has been replaced by Shaun Wright-Phillips. Presumably the winger has gone off due to that yellow card and Capello clearly doesn't want to take any risks. Meanwhile, Howard is back on his feet and looks fine to continue.

HESKEY WITH A CHANCE FOR ENGLAND! Johnson breaks down the right wing and drills a dangerous low ball across the face of goal to Heskey but the Aston Villa man can't quite reach it and collides into Howard. The USA keeper has stayed down for two minutes and looks seriously hurt.

Another chance from a set-piece for the USA now. Donovan whips in a fierce right-footed free-kick from the right into a crowded penalty area. Onyewu escapes Terry to header towards goal but can only direct his effort wide from 12 yards out.

Milner is the first player to go into referee Carlos Simon's book. Cherundolo jinks past the England winger down the right and gets caught late. Not Milner's first foul and no surprise that he's picked up a booking.

Bradley breaks forward from deep in midfield and plays a clever pass to Altidore, who, from around 25 yards out, tries to clip the ball into the path of Findley, but he is stopped in his tracks by King who intervenes sharply to cut out the pass.

Donovan looks like the USA's best threat going forward so far. The former Everton man keeps cutting inside from the right wing to make up an extra forward and will need to be picked up if England are to stop him from creating something.

Lennon breaks down the right wing for England and is in plenty of space as he enters the right side of the USA penalty area. The winger then cuts the ball back towards Rooney but Cherundolo manages to clear the ball away. Lampard then picks up possession with his back to goal but can only fire an overhead-kick into the arms of Howard.

ALTIDORE WITH A CHANCE FOR THE USA!! Donovan picks up possession on the right wing and he plays a wonderful cross into the area for Altidore to head at goal from close range. The USA striker gets in front of King but can only flick a header a couple of yards wide of Green's right-hand post. A wasted opportunity.

Slack defending from England. Bradley plays a short corner to Cherundolo on the right side of the England area and nobody closes the USA right-back down and he is allowed acres of space to pick his pass, but his cross to Donovan as the far post is overhit and rolls all the way out for a throw-in.

CHANCE FOR THE USA!! Bradley swings over a right-footed corner and picks out Onyewu in amongst a number of plays and the AC Milan defender manages to get in front of Heskey and Rooney to direct his header over the bar.

Fabio Capello's men have started the brighter of the two sides, so much so that Johnson tries to recreate the wondergoal he scored against Mexico a couple of weeks ago, only, this time, he fires well over Howard's crossbar and the USA have a goal-kick.

England are awarded a free-kick on the left wing and Lampard tests out this new Jabulani ball by driving the ball into the area but only Donovan can get on the end of it and he turns the ball behind for a corner. Gerrard's looping corner falls to Johnson at the far post but he handles and gives away a free-kick.

What a start for England. Heskey has played a big part so far for Capello's men. The Villa man seems to have the better of DeMerit and has justified his place in the starting line-up already!

GOAL!! ENGLAND TAKE THE LEAD AND IT'S STEVEN GERRARD!! Johnson plays a short throw-in to Lampard around 25 yards out from goal and he picks out Rooney who lays the ball off to Heskey. The Aston Villa forward then nudges the ball to Gerrard who steals a yard in front of his marker to stab the ball past the onrushing Howard. Gerrard puts England 1-0 up!

Now onto the USA’s starting line-up. Bob Bradley has opted to stick to a 4-4-2 formation with Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan playing on either wing, Jozy Altidore has been passed fit to start up front alongside Robbie Findley, while Steve Cherundolo is preferred to Jonathan Spector at right-back.

Gerrard and Lampard in midfield? Green or James in goal? Heskey or Crouch up front? The team news is in and I can tell you that Robert Green starts in goal for England, Steven Gerrard will partner Frank Lampard in central midfield, James Milner starts on the left and Emile Heskey has been given the nod to start alongside Wayne Rooney in attack.

Meanwhile, expectations are not quite as high for the USA. Bob Bradley’s side showed in last year’s Confederations Cup they are no pushovers, beating Euro 2008 winners Spain in the semi-finals before letting a two-goal lead slip in the final, allowing Brazil to fight back and eventually win 3-2. Performances suggest the Americans will have enough to progress from Group C, but it will be a huge surprise to see them beat England tonight.

Everything seemed to be going well for England when Fabio Capello guided them to South Africa with nine wins out of ten in qualifying, but in recent weeks the Italian has come under scrutiny for the first time during his reign as manager. Unconvincing performances in their last three friendlies - as well as doubts over the form and fitness of star players - has put doubt into whether Capello’s men can win the World Cup, but the Three Lions still remain one of the favourites to win the competition this summer.
