FULL-TIME! All over and Manchester United win 5-0 to remain hot on the heels of Chelsea and having improved their goal difference considerably! As for Wigan, a night to forget, on their last game of 2009!

Into three minutes of stoppage time at Old Trafford...

Decent ball by Figueroa into the United box sees Wigan win a corner. The ball comes in to the near post but Rooney heads clear. The ball then falls to Edman who hits it high and wide much to the delight of the home fans.

The home side win a succession of corners and eventually the ball comes to Anderson who hits a great strike but just puts too much on it and the ball flies over the bar.

United win a free kick on the edge of the penalty area after Rooney is felled. The striker picks himself up and tries to curl it in but it's deflected wide for a corner which comes to nothing.

Great save by Kuszczak! A deflected cross finds Rodallega but he puts his header too close to the United stopper who does well to keep it out!

Rooney is the creator this time. He seizes the ball, looks at the options around him before rolling a perfect ball to Valencia who clips it past Pollitt with the outside of his right foot! Great finish!

Corner to Wigan which Gomez takes but it's cleared easily by United. Figueroa tries to feed it back in but it's too close to Kuszczak who claims.

Fletcher comes forward for United and tries to find Rooney but again Bramble is the man to clear for Wigan. It's been a tough night for the visitors, particularly in defence, but you can't fault Bramble for effort.

What a chance for Wigan! A good move by the visitors sees N'Zogbia teed up but he slams his shot just wide of the post! So close!

Some more fancy footwork from Berbatov sees the Bulgarian evade Scharner with some style. The former Tottenham man is enjoying himself tonight.

Valencia and Rafael combine down the right as yet another cross is whipped in to the Wigan area but this time Bramble heads clear and the Latics survive.

Brilliant play by Berbatov who waltzes through the Wigan defence and tees up Rooney who heads against the bar! So close to being 5-0!

Valencia is the creator going around N’Zogbia before crossing for Berbatov who takes a touch before prodding low with the outside of his boot into the far corner!

Good save Pollitt! Rooney gives the Wigan substitute his first touch with a left footed half volley but it's straight at a smiling Pollitt who will be relieved to save that!

A rare Wigan attack sees Rodallega run into the United area but Brown times his tackle to perfection and the Red Devils prepare to come forward again.

More pressure from United ends with Bramble forced to charge down Rooney's shot. Half-time can't come quick enough for Wigan at the moment.

Hendry Thomas tries to get Wigan back in it with a long ranger that has Kuszczak worried but is just over the bar.

Lovely goal by United with a super pass by Berbatov finding Valencia who crosses for Carrick to sidefoot home.

Wes Brown gets the Red Devils moving bringing the ball forward and finding Rafael. The young Brazilian then sends in a wicked cross which Rooney diverts home at the near post to hand United the lead!

A long ball by Carrick tries to find Rooney in the penalty area but Melchiot does well to get it back to Kirkland who clears for Wigan.

Mid-way through the first half and the home side will be wondering how they are still on level terms. Rooney has come the closest, hitting the post, but Wigan are still holding on and United will be hoping they don't come to rue those misses.

Another great chance, this time, for Berbatov! The Bulgarian is put clean through and clips it past Kirkland but just wide of the post! He really should have scored there!

Rooney hits the post! Even closer for United! A super shot by Rooney looks to be heading in but hits the post and somehow the visitors escape!

Off the line by Wigan! So close for United! A corner isn't cleared properly and allows Valencia to cross, Vidic then heads it goalwards and it beats Kirkland but not Scharner who hoofs it clear!

Great challenge by Bramble! Rooney finds Berbatov who looks certain to score but he is denied by a brilliant challenge by the centre-back! Great defending!

Valencia does well to beat N'Zogbia and feed Rooney. The striker then chips the ball to the far post to Berbatov but his header back across goal doesn't find Valencia and simply flies safely into Kirkland's arms.

Park finds Valencia who cuts inside and tries to cross but it's a woeful effort and balloons into the stands. Just over 10 minutes gone and United clearly on top so far.

Some good play by N'Zogbia sees the former Newcastle man win a corner for the visitors. It's taken short but the cross hits the first defender and Berbatov and Rafael clear the danger.

Good persistence by Rooney sees hims rob the ball off Gomez and advance goalwards. He tries his luck from range but his shot is too high and Wigan escape.

Half-chance for Wigan as Rodallega shoots but Kuszczak saves comfortably. Incidentally there is no Ben Foster on the bench for United tonight. Young Ben Amos is the reserve goalkeeper for the Red Devils.

A bad mistake by Thomas almost allows Valencia in! The defender plays the ball across his own area and goes straight to the winger who has a pop at goal but his scuffed shot is saved by Kirkland. Let off for Wigan!

Here we go! Manchester United get things underway at a chilly Old Trafford. The Red Devils immediately pour forwards with former Wigan man Valencia swinging in a cross which is headed clear by Bramble.
