Real Madrid win Aggregate 2 - 0

Live Commentary

  • Thanks to those of you who stuck with this LIVE for its entirety, and those who just popped by to see the result intermittently! I've been Miles Chambers, stick around on Goal for reaction to the Real Madrid cup win.
  • Full-time! Real Madid are through to the last four of the Copa del Rey with a 2-0 aggregate win over Espanyol, an 1-0 on the night. Jese Rodriguez's early goal sealed the simple victory and they will face either Athletic Bilbao or Atletico Madrid in the semi-final stage of the competition.
  • 90' + 1'
Three minutes of stoppage-time at the Bernabeu.
  • 90'
Morata lashes way, way over. Real Madrid have lost interest in this tie now. They know they're through. And Espanyol know they're out.
  • 87'
    Yellow Card Sidnei
  • 87'
Espanyol go so close to levelling on the night! Raul Rodriguez at the back post from a free kick hammers into the side netting. He really, really should have scored that, though as a defender he's hardly a natural in front of goal.
  • 86'
    SubstitutionÁngel Di María Casemiro
  • 86'
    Yellow Card Sergio Ramos
  • 84'
Ronaldo's failed to score again! He lashes it into the side netting from close range. He'll be disappointed in himself for that.
  • 83'
Morata smashes the ball on target from an acute angle, which Casilla saves, but it doesn't matter as the substitute was just offside.
  • 81'
    SubstitutionIsco Morata
  • 80'
That red card was certainly one of the least spicy I've seen this season. The atmosphere's gone very flat, too, as the home crowd watch their team show little interest in gung-ho attacking and the visitors sit spark-less when the ball is at their feet.
  • 79'
    Yellow Card Jhon Córdoba
  • 78'
    SubstitutionAlex Fernández David López
  • 77'
RED CARD! It's a harsh one. Espanyol's Victor Sanchez gets his marching orders after the ball ricochets off his arm in a 50/50 with Xabi Alonso. It's hard to feel too sympathetic though as he's being walking on a tightrope for a while now.
  • 76'
    Yellow/Red Víctor Sánchez Mata
  • 75'
Alonso skids a shot wide from 25 yards. Never threatening the goal, really, but worth a crack unmarked from that distance.
  • 74'
Pepe goes on for Coentrao, who's brought off as a precaution. Nacho moves over to the left, as a result.
  • 73'
    SubstitutionFabio Coentrao Pepe
  • 73'
Di Maria whips in a corner, which Espanyol fail to effectively clear. Real Madrid remain in possession and the visitors remain under pressure.
  • 71'
A clash of heads between Coentrao and Stuani sees the Portuguese full-back grounded for a minute or so as he receives treatment.
  • 68'
Yellow card for Ronaldo! Not every game you see that, but he's put in the referee's book for a mistimed tackle on Sidnei (who's been Espanyol's star tonight).
  • 67'
    Yellow Card Cristiano Ronaldo
  • 66'
    SubstitutionPizzi Stuani
  • 66'
Pizzi is hauled off for Christian Stuani. Hopefully he can keep his shots lower than 20 feet.
  • 64'
Pizzi, Pizzi, Pizzi. He must have kicked the ball over the stadium with that "effort" from the edge of the Madrid area. Seconds earlier, Cordoba had tried - and failed - to scored with an overhead kick, barely making contact in the end.
  • 62'
Espanyol, for the record, are playing unremarkably mediocre. It's not a poor performance, per se, but it's really not what you want from a team who need two goals to prevent elimination from the competition.
  • 60'
The crowd are starting to get a bit restless as the ball pings tediously from end to end. Neither side have had a chance in a few minutes.
  • 57'
Casillas touches the ball! Twice! Firstly to clear the ball (poorly) from a lame through-ball and then to deny Cordoba in a one-one-one. The shot was straight at him, but the flag was waved afterwards for offside anyway.
  • 55'
A shot from a tight-ish angle from Ronaldo - who's clearly craving a goal right now - flies a few feet wide of Casilla's left upright. He probably should have tested the goalkeeper again from that distance, but his sharp turn must have made him lose his bearings a bit.
  • 52'
A friendly reminder that it's 2-0 on aggregate. Espanyol are really up against it if they want to qualify for the Copa del Rey last four.
  • 49'
HOW DID THAT NOT GO IN?! A mix of great fortune and good goalkeeping sees Ronaldo burst into laughter as his shot from eight yards out skims Casilla's side and flies inches over the crossbar! How many times has he been denied a goal by the Espanyol shot-stopper now? Has to be at least four, maybe five times already.
  • 48'
Jhon Cordoba, brought on at half-time for the totally anonymous Gabriel Torje, dips a shot over the bar from 20 yards out.
  • 47'
Fun fact: it's been 704 minutes since Real Madrid last conceded a goal in competitive football. Not too shabby at all!
  • 46'
    SubstitutionGabriel Torje Jhon Córdoba
  • 46'
We're back underway at the Santiago Bernabeu!
  • Half-time at the Bernabeu! Real Madrid sit relatively comfortable in a 1-0 lead on the night and 2-0 over Espanyol on aggregate. Jese Rodriguez's goal has seen the hosts edge closer to the semi-final stage of the Copa del Rey and the visitors are yet to show any real signs of an unlikely comeback.
  • 45'
Ronaldo's been moved into the middle as Real Madrid keep their formation fluid. Pizzi has his second shots in two minutes, but this time it's booted over from 10 yards out. Way, way over.
  • 43'
Pizzi, on loan from Benfica, lashes a shot on target but it's blocked by a Madrid body. Espanyol's attacking remains blunt but they're certainly looking livelier than at the start.
  • 42'
A Real Madrid booking but was it fair? Nacho puts in a superb slide tackle on Sergio Garcia but the referee sprints over to book him as Garcia writhes around on the ground. He did catch him with his thigh on the follow-through, but the amateur dramatics - and the yellow card - were silly.
  • 41'
    Yellow Card Nacho Fernández
  • 41'
Casilla at one end, Casillas at the other. The latter isn't having much to do, mind. He should have been tested by Capdevila from a whipped free kick from Espanyol's right flank, but the Spaniard skims his header wide. He was offside anyway, to be fair.
  • 39'
Again, Casilla off his line quickly to sweep clear a chipped through-ball from Madrid.
  • 38'
Brave goalkeeping from Casilla, who comes out to get to the balls first over Ronaldo. Irrespective of his showing since the goal, he should have saved Jese's goalbound shot.
  • 36'
    Yellow Card Víctor Sánchez Mata
  • 36'
Victor Sanchez gets a deserved booking for hacking at Isco's ankles. The camera pans to Sergio Ramos, who is familiar with the odd booking himself...
  • 33'
Casilla shows good reflexes to react to a deflected Di Maria shot which was dipping inside the goal, tipping it wide for a corner. It looked like an extravagant leap, but it was definitely going in without some sort of dive from the Espanyol goalkeeper.
  • 31'
Some interesting refereeing at the Bernabeu. Joan Capdevila has the whistle blown against him for simple standing still as Casillas leapt past him to punch the ball, without being at all impeded.
  • 30'
Espanyol are starting to gain some ground as Real Madrid relent some pressure. Garcia forces a tackle in the penalty area from Nacho, for a corner to the visitors.
  • 28'
Xabi Alonso exhibits trademark strength to hold off Alex Fernandez's pressing and ultimately wins a free kick just behind the halfway line.
  • 26'
Isco's not impressed me too much tonight, but he just controlled the ball wonderfully. Zinedine Zidane-esque. He's playing in a false-nine position of sorts tonight, in a Madrid 4-3-3, by the way.
  • 23'
CHANCE FOR MADRID! Superb attacking play from Carlo Ancelotti's men. Angel Di Maria gives it to Fabio Coentrao, who ducks inside and slots a fine through-ball to Ronaldo inside the 18-yard box. Casilla flies off his line to meet the attacker and blocks his hammered shot with his outstretched legs.
  • 20'
An Espanyol corner is too deep and Sergio Garcia's header flies wide. The visitors yet to test Iker Casillas.
  • 18'
Ronaldo sends Raul Rodriguez flying with a dummy shot then his shot from 12 yards or so is caught by Espanyol goalkeeper Kiko Casilla, like a basketballer.
  • 16'
Nacho taking no risks as he boots clear after blocking Sergio Garcia's shot. The captain never looked like really threatening the hosts' goal, but he was lively with his dribbling at least.
  • 15'
You've got to feel for Raul Rodriguez, the man charged with marking Ronaldo. He succeeds in preventing the Portuguese star from setting anything goalbound up this time, but at the cost of a corner.
  • 13'
Asier Illarramendi and Xabi Alonso are dictating play in front of the defence. The same defence, by the way, which have broken the record for consecutive wins without conceding a goal. They can extend that record tonight if it stays 1-0.
  • 11'
Espanyol are struggling to see any of the ball at the moment. Ronaldo just fizzed a brilliant ball across the box but Isco swipes and misses at the tantalising pass. Still just 1-0 to the hosts.
  • 9'
Javier Aguirre's men now need to score twice to qualify for the semi-finals. Scoring twice at the Bernabeu - nevermind winning there - is far from easy though...
  • 7'
    Assist Xabi Alonso
  • 7'
    Goal Jesé Rodríguez
REAL MADRID TAKE THE LEAD!! A fine Espanyol break is blocked and suddenly Real Madrid are the ones countering. Xabi Alonso fires a beautiful diagonal ball to the on-running Jese Rodriguez. He controls it excellently then finishes it with prowess at the near post from 15 yards.
  • 6'
Quite a few spare seats in the Bernabeu stands. Apparently midweek cup clashes just don't whet the appetite like La Liga ties!
  • 4'
Free kick to Real Madrid. Cristiano Ronaldo steps up...but the Ballon d'Or winner skims it high and wide. He'll be hoping he's hit his low-point for the evening early on.
  • 2'
Abraham Gonzalez gets a foot in to deny Isco a shot in the opening two minutes.
  • 1'
And we're off in the Copa del Rey clash!
  • So, Real Madrid are 1-0 up following the first leg. Can they build on that advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu? Or is a shock on the cards in Spain?
  • ESPANYOL: Kiko Casilla; Raul Rodriguez, Sidnei, Hector Moreno, Capdevila; Victor Sanchez, Alex Fernandez, Abraham; Torje, Pizzi, Sergio Garcia.
  • REAL MADRID: Casillas; Arbeloa, Sergio Ramos, Nacho, Coentrao; Xabi Alonso, Illarramendi; Di Maria, Isco, Cristiano Ronaldo; Jese.
  • Line-ups coming up, ladies and gents...
