FULL-TIME! The referee blows his whistle and sees Liverpool earn a 2-0 win after a hard-fought battle with Oldham. The League One side were unable to match their upset against Liverpool last season, but they put in a good display nonetheless. Korey Smith escapes a second yellow as Sterling stays on his feet despite several attempts from the Oldham man to knock him over.
Liverpool nearly get themselves a third as Suarez squares to Coutinho in the area, but the Brazilian's shot is blocked.
On comes 20-year-old Anton Rodgers, the son of Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.

GOAL!!! Liverpool double their lead just when Oldham were looking encouraging! Aspas did well to get into the area and find Sterling. The winger's shot looks to be going comfortably wide, but it strikes Tarkowski and directs into the goal.
Decent effort by Countinho from the edge of the area, but Oxley saves it well.
There we go, Liverpool lose a man as Agger heads straight down the tunnel.
Liverpool could be about to go down to ten men. Agger is struggling with a knock and they have already made all three of their substitutions.
Rodgers is seemingly unhappy with how his team are attacking as he brings Luis Suarez on from the bench. Gerrard leaves the pitch.
This encounter is really starting to open up. Oldham are pressing as much as they can, while Liverpool are being presented opportunities to attack on the counter.
Massive save by Jones! Petrasso produces as excellent turn on the edge of the Liverpool area and hits a stinging drive towards the goal, but Jones denies him.
Sidenetting for Gerrard! Mellor is tackled and Liverpool are quick to exploit the space. The hosts' captain gets into the area and fires at goal, but he can hit the side of the net.
Oldham feel they should have had a penalty in that previous passage of play. Philliskirk appears to be pushed in the back, but the referee ignored the protests.
Oldham causing problems now, however. Mellor crosses from the right and Philliskirk looks to connect with it, but Jones manages to intercept with a punch.
After a fairly manic start to the second half, the match seems to have calmed down a little now.
Important block by Tarkowski as he gets in the way of a Gerrard shot from the edge of the area.
Aspas really has bursted into life in this second half. He gets another chance, but misses the target.
Liverpool waste another golden chance! Sterling finds himself through on goal and he tries to take the goalkeeper on, but overruns the ball. He then picks out Coutinho, but the Brazilian cannot find the net from a tight angle.
Aspas hits the post! The former Celta Vigo man rose well to meet a Sterling cross and he glanced the ball on to the frame of the goal.

GOAL!!! Finally Liverpool have the breakthrough against League One side Oldham! Sterling runs past his marker and chips a good cross into the area and Iago Aspas finds the net with a good volley.
Big chance for Liverpool! Coutinho puts in an excellent corner and Gerrard arrives late to flash a header just over the bar!
Liverpool nearly create a good opening as Gerrard fizzes a pass across to the edge of the area. Henderson collects and tries to squeeze an intricate pass into the box for Aspas, but it is not quite good enough.
Coutinho fires a delivery into the penalty area. Both Toure and Agger try to get shots on goal before Kelly sees an effort from distance deflected wide.
There was in fact another Liverpool change at the break. Coutinho replaced Moses, who was poor.
Once again, nothing comes of the Liverpool corner.
Liverpool win themselves an early corner as a lofted pass is deflected behind by an Oldham defender.
There has been one substitution at the break. Lucas replaced Luis Alberto, who was one of Liverpool's better attackers in the first half.
We're back underway for the second half.
HALF-TIME: The referee blows his whistle for half-time and Oldham take a well-earned 0-0 draw into the break after a decent defensive display. Liverpool have controlled possession, but they are struggling to break their opponents down. Can they get through in the second half?
Good try by Philliskirk as he tries his luck from long range, but he flies just wide.
Dangerous move by Liverpool. Luis Alberto slips a good pass in behind the Oldham defenders and Aspas collects before firing just wide.
Liverpool open up Oldham and Sterling's eyes light up as he is presented with a good chance on the half-volley, but he hits it over the crossbar.
Clarke-Harris isolates Henderson and bursts past him down the flank, but at the final moment he knocks the ball out for a Liverpool goal kick.
Oldham defend the corner well and ensure nothing comes of it.
The corner is worked back to Sterling just outside the area and he sees a shot deflected wide. Another corner.
The hosts win another corner as Cissokho's low cross narrowly misses Aspas and Oldham put it behind.
They play it short and Mellor drills a cross in, but the delivery is overhit and goes out for a goal kick. What a waste.
Oldham make a rare venture into the Liverpool half. Petrasso evades Toure and then wins a corner off the Ivorian.
Liverpool are starting to control this now and again they cause problems down the flanks. Sterling beats his man and hammers a low cross into the danger zone, but Oxley cuts it out.
Kelly gets into the Oldham area and gets fires an effort at goal, but Oxley saves well.
Luis Alberto delivers the corner and the ball breaks for Sterling. The wingers gets a shot away, but a combination of two Oldham defenders manage to keep it out.
Cissokho has proven to be a good outlet on the left so far. This time he wins a corner.
Encouraging move for Liverpool as Moses gets down the right. He runs at his marker and tries to beat him. The Oldham defender does well to knock him off balance and the winger makes a mess of the situation.
Great effort by Luis Alberto as he fires a shot at goal from long range, but Oxley is equal to it as he punches it away.
Gerrard takes the corner but the passage of play quickly comes to an end as an incorrect offside decision is given.
Intelligent play by Luis Alberto as he shields the ball from Oldham defenders and plays Kelly in down the right. The full-back then wins a corner.
Luis Alberto picks out Gerrard to his left in the centre. The England and Liverpool captain sprays a pass out to the wing for Cissokho, but his attempt is awful and he sticks it straight out of play.
Oldham are doing well so far. Liverpool have threatened, but the visitors are seeing plenty of the ball and playing positively.
Good chance for the hosts as Cissokho gets forward down the left and crosses low to Moses. He picks out Luis Alberto to his right, but the summer signing from Sevilla narrowly misses the target.
Sterling is looking dangerous down the left. He runs at Oldham full-back Mellor, but the defender deals with the England international well and wins a goal kick.
Liverpool play the corner short, but Oldham are quick to win the ball back. They try to hit the hosts on the counterattack, but Cissokho ends it with a cheap foul.
Moses threatens down the right and wins a corner for Liverpool.

Liverpool storm forward and go close to taking the lead as Aspas flashes the ball across the face of the goal, but he puts it just behind Moses and too far in front of Luis Alberto.
Nothing comes of the corner and Liverpool immediately spring a counterattack.
Oldham win themselves a corner after Philliskirk caused problems in attack.
Good move by Liverpool as Cissokho crosses from the left. The delivery is dangerous, but no one can connect with it. Kelly collects on the right flank and also crosses, but nothing comes of the move.
Gerrard seems to be fine now after that Smith challenge. He has been moving a little gingerly, however.
There is the match's first yellow card as Smith clatters Gerrard on the edge of the Liverpool area. Very strong tackle.

Meanwhile, the son of Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is on the bench for Oldham today. Could Anton Rodgers upset his old man today?
Liverpool will be out for vengeance today after losing to Oldham in the same competition last season, suffering a 3-2 defeat at Boundary Park. This is the third successive season in which these two teams have faced each other in a cup competition.
