Player Ratings: Newcastle 0-2 Manchester City

The Magpies are left enraged by referee Mike Jones after Cheikh Tiote's disallowed goal as Manuel Pellegrini's men escape with all three points to go top of the Premier League

    Tim Krul

Was left with no chance by Dzeko's cool finish early on. Was put under real pressure by City set pieces but stood firm and produced a great save to deny Negredo before he was finally beaten by the Spaniard late on.

  • Davide Santon

    Davide Santon

Composed and lively in the first half as Nasri continuously drifted inside. Had to be more alert in the second period after the arrival of Navas and struggled at times with the Spaniard's pace.

  • Mike Williamson

    Mike Williamson

It looks as though Coloccini may be rubbing off on the Englishman as he remained Newcastle's most composed defender in the Argentinian's absence, while also showing his aerial prowess at both ends of the pitch.

  • Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa

Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa Flop of the Match

Starting in an unfavoured right-back role, looked out of his comfort zone early on as he gave away possession cheaply and struggled to cope with the power of Kolarov. Lucky not to be sent off for a vicious hack which forced Nasri off.

  • Steven Taylor

    Steven Taylor

Solid in his first game back alongside Williamson as they kept chances for City's front two at a premium after an early blip. Occasionally caught under the ball but his return was a welcome sight for Newcastle fans with Coloccini out injured.

  • Yohan Cabaye

    3.50

    Yohan Cabaye

Looked every bit the top player that is being pursued by clubs this transfer window. Consistently tough in the tackle and displayed his fine range of passing. Denied an equaliser on a couple of occasions by Hart's quick reactions.

  • Moussa Sissoko

    3.00

    Moussa Sissoko

Was called upon early on to deal with the power of Kolarov on the right and the switch in wings did him a favour as he received more of the ball and was given more space, such was the Serbian's tendency to get forward.

  • Vurnon Anita

    Vurnon Anita

What he lacked in stature against the towering Toure and Fernandinho, he made up for in spirit as he zipped around the midfield, readily receving passes and often linking well with Cabaye and Tiote before being subbed.

  • Cheikh Tiote

    Cheikh Tiote

Seriously unlucky not to double his tally in Newcastle colours as his ferocious effort was ruled out for offside. Apart from that disappointment, he kept his head, and more importantly kept Toure out of the game.

  • Yoan Gouffran

    Yoan Gouffran

Struggled with the physicality of Kolarov early on and had to switch wings to accommodate for it. Worked tirelessly to help out Santon and was unlucky to be ruled offside when Tiote was denied the leveler.

  • Loïc Remy

    2.50

    Loïc Remy

Fed off scraps in the opening period but came into the game as it opened up. Should have capitalised on the defensive mix-up between Kompany and Zabaleta and maybe should have done better with a late header too.

    Massadio Haidara

Came on for the tiring Yanga-Mbiwa and didn't fare much better against the pace of Navas.

    Hatem Ben Arfa

Came on as Newcastle tried to conjure a late goal but his fleeting footwork didn't have the Man City defence fooled.

Came on as Newcastle searched for an equaliser.

  • Joe Hart

    Joe Hart

Was well beaten by Tiote's effort and in truth his appeals for offside were probably more in hope than in expectation. Did produce stops when necessary though, including an impressive save from Cabaye.

  • Vincent Kompany

    Vincent Kompany

City are always a different prospect with their captain at the back and he encapsulated his side's dominance, although still managed a few shaky moments.

  • Pablo Zabaleta

    2.50

    Pablo Zabaleta

Booked for a nasty looking challenge on Tiote but didn't put him off his game as he continued to out-muscle Gouffran in their duel.

  • Aleksandar Kolarov

Aleksandar Kolarov Top of the Match

Had a field day down the left in the early exchanges as he bullied Yanga-Mbiwa and Gouffran, his dominance leading to an excellent assist for City's opening goal.

  • Martín Demichelis

    Martín Demichelis

Demonstrated his experience time and again with crucial interceptions that halted menacing Newcastle attacks in their tracks.

  • Samir Nasri

    2.50

    Samir Nasri

Showed bags of pace and gave the Newcastle backline no time on the ball, pressing them into poor passing. Went off with what looked like a nasty knee injury in the second half that will put a dampener on City's win.

  • David Silva

    3.00

    David Silva

As ever, was the key cog in City's midfield, turning defence into attack with just the one touch at times. Constantly classy all afternoon.

  • Fernandinho
    0
    0
    2.50

    Fernandinho

Fairly innocuous in the opening period as he and Toure failed to seize the initiative in midfield, allowing the home side periods of sustained possession.

  • Yaya Touré
    0
    0
    2.00

    Yaya Touré

The newly-crowned African player of the Year didn't really ever exert himself in the opening period as he sat back in an attempt to keep Tiote out of the game. Cut a tired figure though at the beginning of the second period

  • Negredo
    0
    0
    3.00

    Negredo

Was an inch or so away from doubling City's lead on a couple of occasions as he did well to lose his marker and reach crosses from the boot of Kolarov. Deserved his late goal for his constant hard work.

  • Edin Dzeko
    0
    0
    2.50

    Edin Dzeko

Was in the right place at the right time to fire City into an early lead but rarely got a sniff apart from that. Dropped deep to link with the midfield more readily but was taken off just after the break as City looked to shore things up.

Substitutions

Came on and gave Newcastle cause for concern down the right.
