Player Ratings: Southampton 0-3 Chelsea

An inspired second-half substitution was just the tonic for the ever-improving Blues as goals from Fernando Torres, Oscar and Willian saw them home on the south coast

    Kelvin Davis

Alert to deal with the dangerous Ramires early on and dealt with everything that was thrown at him until the second-half goals, none of which he could do much about. Impressive in his short distribution from the back.

  • Dejan Lovren

Dejan Lovren Flop of the Match

Endured a torrid time up against a rejuvenated-looking Torres and his lack of pace told. Looked less assured on the ball than his normal self, too. Not the Croatian's finest hour but he did grow into the game somewhat.

  • Jose Rocha Fonte

    2.50

    Jose Rocha Fonte

Susceptible to Chelsea's torpedo-like counterattacking play but took up a deeper role to deal with the threat as the game progressed.

  • Luke Shaw

    Luke Shaw

Slightly inhibited by the constant movement and probing of Mata out wide but showed tremendous energy reserves to get up and down the flank time and time again. Was replaced at the break.

  • Morgan Schneiderlin

    Morgan Schneiderlin

Returned to the first-team fold and gave his side some structure and discipline in the middle of the park. Snuffed out several Chelsea attacks and was always committed in the challenge.

  • Steven Davis

    Steven Davis

Excellent display from the Northern Irishman early on, who linked up well with the full-backs and his fellow attacking players to connect midfield and attack. Unafraid to get stuck in but, like his side, he faded.

  • G. Ramírez

    G. Ramírez

Looked like the sort of player who earned such rave reviews during his time with Bologna. Technically excellent but worked hard, too, robbing Chelsea players of possession on several occasions and knitting play intelligently.

  • Jack Cork

    2.50

    Jack Cork

Composed at the base of the Saints midfield and efficient in his use of the ball throughout. Looked to prove Chelsea wrong for letting him go but could do little to impact on the result.

  • Adam Lallana
    1
    1
    2.50

    Adam Lallana

Not allowed as much freedom as usual, mainly due to the incessant pressing from the Chelsea back line, but was tidy on the ball.

  • Calum Chambers

    Calum Chambers

Impressive performance from the latest youngster off the Saints' conveyor-belt of talent. Regularly got at Cole and Schurrle failed to get the better of him.

  • Jay Rodriguez

    2.50

    Jay Rodriguez

Battled hard but wasted a terrific first-half opportunity and could not get the better of the determined Cahill and Terry.

Substitutions

  • Nathaniel Clyne

    Nathaniel Clyne

Came on at the break and put in a stellar display down the left, constantly overlapping Lallana as the Saints sought a breakthrough. Stuck to his guns defensively, too, allowing little past him.

  • James Ward-Prowse

    James Ward-Prowse

Barely touched the ball during his brief spell on the pitch.

  • Rickie Lambert

    2.50

    Rickie Lambert

Frustrated by a serial lack of service from those behind him but battled to get the better of a water-tight defensive duo in Cahill and Terry.

  • Petr Cech

    2.50

    Petr Cech

Looked suspect at times from corners but was helped out by his defence time and time again. Solid for the most part, that said.

  • Ashley Cole
    2
    0
    2.50

    Ashley Cole

Did not seem his usual self. Rarely got forward and was pegged back by Chambers time and again. Did not seize the opportunity to show that he deserves a regular spot in the side.

  • Gary Cahill
    1
    0
    3.50

    Gary Cahill

His relationship at the heart of the defence with Terry continues to blossom and he largely stifled the threat of Rodriguez, with the Saints striker often forced wide in search of the ball.

  • John Terry

    3.50

    John Terry

A strong performance from Chelsea's leader. Looked assured with Cahill by his side and stood firm in the face of Southampton pressure.

  • César Azpilicueta
    2

    3.00

    César Azpilicueta

Quiet from an offensive perspective but there could be no complaints with his defensive contribution. It was no coincidence that this was one of Lallana's quietest showings of the season.

  • Ramires
    1
    0
    3.00

    Ramires

Sloppy in possession but always looked to drive his team forward from central areas. Struggled to exert enough influence on the game, though, as the attacking cavalry became isolated.

  • John Obi Mikel

    John Obi Mikel

Dependable as ever, the Nigerian kept his side ticking with some clever passing and positioning. Ensured that his side were never outnumbered on the counter.

  • Eden Hazard
    1

    3.00

    Eden Hazard

Showed some neat tricks and flicks but very little end product to show for it as the Saints looked to gang up on the Belgian.

  • Fernando Torres
    3
    1
    4.00

    Fernando Torres

Was electric from the outset with runs in behind the Saints' back line and showed excellent perseverance when others around him toiled to score the crucial opening goal of the contest. Merited it for an all-action display.

  • Juan Mata

    0
    3.00

    Juan Mata

Impressed largely but offered little attacking threat. Did not contribute enough on the counter but his passing accuracy could not be faulted. Hauled off as the Blues went in search of an opener.

  • Andre Schürrle

    0
    2.50

    Andre Schürrle

A hit-and-miss display from the German, who showed good awareness of those around him but was also slack with his passing and failed to beat his marker enough. Sacrificed at the start of the second period.

Substitutions

  • Michael Essien

    Michael Essien

Did not have enough time to make an impact.

    Oscar Top of the Match

The Brazilian added some much-needed verve to an otherwise stale attack and strengthened Mourinho's case for fielding him as the first-choice No.10. Set up the goal slightly fortuitously, it has to be said, but came up with the goods when it mattered. Even added a goal to boot.

  • Willian
    1
    1
    3.50

    Willian

His arrival coincided with Torres's opener and he later got himself on the scoresheet with a superbly taken strike. Worked tirelessly up and down the right wing to keep the Saints at bay.
