Live Commentary

  • For Aston Villa, Christian Benteke never did come alive, but the supporting cast found enough among themselves to haul themselves back on level terms to give the travelling fans a pleasant four mile journey back home.
  • West Brom, though, had more clear cut chances, many of which fell to the wayward Sessegnon. They should have put this game to bed and the point gained will most certainly feel like two lost.
  • An amazing turnaround in the second half means we see a repeat of the scoreline from this fixture last season which also finished 2-2. Both sides remain on 15 points after Shane Long's fantastic first-half double was cancelled out by El Ahmadi's opportunistic effort, and a sublime long-range shot from Westwood.
  • FULL-TIME: West Brom 2-2 Aston Villa
  • 90' + 4'
That was the last kick of the game, the ball is swung in but West Brom manage to clear through Mulumbu.
  • 90' + 3'
    Yellow Card Gabriel Agbonlahor
  • 90' + 3'
West Brom have another chance from the right and it's Amalfitano again who crosses but it's too light. The Baggies have a corner though...
  • 90' + 2'
It's West Brom going for the winner and Amalfitano is the man who is always in space. A poor dribble and then a poor cross allow Villa to regain possession. I suspect they'll take the draw.
  • 90'
Brunt swings in a free kick from near the halfway line but it's too long and gets a touch before going out for a throw. The fourth official signals for three additional minutes.
  • 89'
Amalfitano and Brunt try to combine down the right flank but Fabian Delph gets back and reads the danger well to make a vital intervention. Into the dying moments now.
  • 87'
West Brom patiently try to work a chances inside the Villa half with some nice passing and movement but when Brunt tries to swing a cross into the area he miscues and fires the ball into the crowd. Frustrating for the home support.
  • 86'
    Yellow Card Ciaran Clark
  • 85'
Great chance for Villa is wasted by Weimann! Benteke did well to win a flick-on into the Austrian's path but the striker elected to fire a volley at goal from range and unfortunately for him it sailez into row Z.
  • 83'
Paul Lambert made all three of his changes shortly after half-time so all the cards have been played in the West Midlands derby. It's set up for a grand old finish...
  • 82'
    SubstitutionGoran Popov Victor Anichebe
  • 82'
Victor Anichebe, who has scored in his last two appearances against Aston Villa, is about to enter the fray. He replaces Popov, so Clarke is going all-out to win this one!
  • 80'
The hosts are forced into the passing the ball back through the lines before Myhill eventually hooks his long clearance straight out of play. Agbonlahor then wins a header on the edge of the box to put in Benteke, but the Villa striker was stood offside.
  • 78'
The away fans are rampant and so are their team. It's all Villa at the moment and the Baggies are the nervous ones now. Can they complete a remarkable comeback with a third?
  • 76'
    Goal Ashley Westwood
  • 76'
WHAT A GOAL FROM WESTWOOD! He collects a clearance 30 yards from goal and hits a shot with the outside of his right boot which whistles past Myhill into the right side of the net. What a comeback from the visitors, incredible stuff!
  • 75'
Long is away on the break again from a long ball aim towards the left flank. The Irishman drifts towards the box and elects to shoot, despite Brunt making a good overlapping run. His effort is tame and easily collected by Myhill.
  • 73'
    SubstitutionStéphane Sessegnon James Morrison
  • 73'
Sessegnon makes way for Morrison, the Benin international has had a weird night as he missed a number of clear cut chances but contributed well elsewhere.
  • 71'
The Villa fans are back in fine voice once more, declaring themselves 'the pride of Birmingham'. They have just under 20 minutes to get themselves level with West Brom and a throw-in in line with the edge of the box. Benteke, though, gifts the ball back to the hosts.
  • 69'
That goal has breathed new life in Aston Villa's performance. Paul Lambert, meanwhile, has taken his coat off in the dugout. It is absolutely freezing, but then again he is Scottish.
  • 67'
    Assist Andreas Weimann
  • 67'
    Goal K. El Ahmadi
  • 67'
GOAL!!! El Ahmadi gets Villa right back into the game with a little dink over Myhill after the ball luckily broke to him in the box. The visitors handed a lifeline!
  • 66'
Some signs of life from Benteke as he wins a long ball out from the back inside the Baggies penalty area. His shot which follows is on target but it was never going to trouble Boaz Myhill.
  • 66'
Some signs of life from Benteke as he wins a long ball out from the back inside the Baggies penalty area. His shot which follows is on target but it was never going to trouble Boaz Myhill.
  • 65'
CHANCE! Amalfitano ones again gets in down the byline, this time on the left, but his cut back is blazed over the bar by Sessegnon under pressure.
  • 63'
The changes have at least given Aston Villa some threat now. Agbonlahor's pace has caused some trouble to the Albion rearguard but he can't quite keep control on a run and the hosts survive. Better from the visitors.
  • 61'
From attack to defence, West Brom earn a corner moments after almost conceding themselves. Amalfitano's delivery is well cut out by Vlaar, though.
  • 59'
CLOSE! Weimann pounces on the ball as it drops loose following a challenge on Benteke. His shot his fired at Myhill and then squirms agonisingly past the post and out for a corner. Villa's best moment for a long, long time.
  • 57'
    SubstitutionYacouba Sylla Fabian Delph
  • 57'
    SubstitutionAlexandar Tonev Andreas Weimann
  • 57'
    SubstitutionLibor Kozák Gabriel Agbonlahor
  • 57'
Massive gamble from Paul Lambert as he makes no less than three changes!
  • 56'
Chance! The Baggies exert sustained pressure onto the Villa defence before Amalfitano cuts in from the right flank but his right-footed shot is curled over the bar.
  • 54'
It's the first booking of the night, and it's an accumulation of fouls which does for Mulumbu as he chops down Aleksandar Tonev and goes into the referee's book. The Baggies are content to sit back and see what Villa have got for now.
  • 53'
    Yellow Card Y. Mulumbu
  • 52'
Bacuna has the opportunity to cross from the right but his delivery is very poor. Mulumbu manages to intercept on the edge of the box, but he instantly gives the ball away too. Scrappy from both sides still.
  • 50'
Delph is getting some instructions on the Villa bench but his tracksuit remains on. A scrappy fe minutes sees the ball go from end to end, missing out the midfield, but with very little in terms of quality from either side.
  • 48'
Villa go straight on the attack but Baker's shot on the bounce from the edge of the box loops high and wide. Lambert has resisted the urge to make any half-time changes.
  • 46'
The teams are out for the second half, Villa take the kick-off and we are underway!
  • A lot of talk about that first goal from Shane Long. Many comparing it to the famous goal by Dennis Bergkamp in Marsielle against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup. I have to say, it's out of the same top drawer.
  • Shane Long has made the difference at The Hawthorns with two fantastic goals. The first especially - a Bergkamp-esque first touch on the edge of the box before a ruthless finish. The second effort, a perfectly-weighted dink after a skillful step-over, was more subtle but of the same high quality. Is there any way back for Villa in the second half?
  • HALF-TIME: West Brom 2-0 Aston Villa
  • 45'
Only one minute added on at the end of the half.
  • 44'
Mulumbu rampages through the middle of the park in an almighty scramble. Claudio Yacob and Sylla look to have come off worst. Proper derby challenge.
  • 42'
West Brom have been superb in this first half and it looks like Steve Clarke's instructions are to protect this two-goal lead until the break. A Villa goal now with alter the situation massively.
  • 40'
A poor pass from Brunt gives the ball away to Benteke. The Belgian looks up and finds Tonev on the run. The wideman has another effort on goal but this one is no better than his previous three.
  • 38'
Superb passing from West Brom. The Baggies construct patiently with real quality in the Villa half and work the ball to Sessegnon but the Benin international, for once, fails to beat him man.
  • 36'
Aston Villa seem to be in control of things now but are still struggling to get Benteke on the ball. They don't look like scoring while you wouldn't bet against Long grabbing his hat-trick at any moment.
  • 34'
Comical stuff as Al Ahmadi lays a ball off for Benteke to shoot, but the big Belgian's effort is blocked by the Moroccan!
  • 33'
Westwood drifts a good free kick into the box from deep which causes trouble in the West Brom defence. The ball drops to Benteke but he woefully miscues his effort.
  • 31'
Long is on fire! The Irishman picks the ball up on the half-way line and shifts through the gears running directly through the heart of the Aston Villa defence. He drives a rasping shot at goal but it's right down Guzan's throat, who manages to make a block.
  • 29'
Briliant tackle from Vlaar! Long finds himself through on goal as he latches on to long ball out from the back. To his credit, the Aston Villa manages to get back and make an intervention before Long had a chance to complete a first-half hat-trick.
  • 28'
Aston Villa construct momentum on the attack but Sylla is not on the same wavelength as his team-mates and concedes possession cheaply.
  • 26'
West Brom have a corner from the right with Chris Brunt drives into the area. Guzan has to flap at it and in turn concedes another. Amalfitano takes the second but Baker gets up wel to clear for the visitors.
  • 24'
WHAT AN EFFORT! Kozak shaves the post with a screamer on the half-volley. He collected a flick-on by Benteke on the edge of the box before unleasing a ferocious drive which sailed agonisingly over.
  • 22'
A free kick from the left is swung in by Brunt and Guzan does really well to collect under pressure. Villa, fortunately for them, have taken some of the early sting out of the game but West Brom are collectively closing down their opponents, with great success too.
  • 20'
In games like this a miss like that can always be a turning point. Can Villa capitalise and force fate in their favour?
  • 19'
WHAT A MISS! Reid takes a clever quick free kick out wide to Amalfitano who takes the ball to the byline before picking out Sessegnon at the back post. The Benin international inexplicably scuffs the shot wide, though. Should be 3-0 and perhaps game over...
  • 18'
This  is a good spell for the visitors, they're finally getting to grips with the occasion. Still not clear cut chances though, as Mulumbu brings down Kozak. The Villa free kick is swung in by Westwood but it's easily cleared by McAuley.
  • 16'
The midfield pair of Yacob and Mulumbu have been brilliant but the former gives the ball away and Villa launch an attack. The visitors probe in the Baggies half but are struggling to get Benteke involved.
  • 14'
Aston Villa look really shakey and are losing the ball in the own half. Long has a couple of chances to thread the ball through to Sessegnon but Villa manage to defend their lines. Lambert is pacing up and downt he touchline.
  • 12'
It's another superb goal from Shane Long. Bacuna is badly at fault after his misplaced pass across his box is pounced upon by the Irishman. The Baggies striker uses a step-over to beat Baker again before dinking a delightful finish over the helpless Guzan. Fantastic start for the home side!
  • 11'
    Goal Shane Long
  • 11'
GOAL!!! West Brom 2-0 Aston Villa. It's Shane Long again!
  • 10'
Toney has another effort at goal but this time it's tame and right into Myhill's hands. Christian Benteke's pass which played him through was too light and caused him to check back.
  • 8'
The visitors have settled on the ball now. Tonev, in particular, looks a real threat on the right-hand side.
  • 6'
West Brom manage to defend the corner and attack on the break. They eventually win a free kick on the halfway line, but Steven Reid's delivery is easily caught by Brad Guzan.
  • 5'
Aston Villa are noticably shaken by that amazing early goal from Shane Long. But out of nowhere Tonev smashes a right-footed shot at goal from range which takes a nick off McAuley before Myhill palms it away from a corner.
  • 3'
    Assist Chris Brunt
  • 3'
    Goal Shane Long
  • 3'
GOAL!!! Shane Long with a beautiful goal! Chris Brunt hits a diagonal ball which is right on the money but Shane Long takes two amazing touches, with the ball dropping over his shoulder, before curling a left footed shot, low past Brad Guzan. The Baggies are bouncing!
  • 2'
A minute of applause took place prior to kick off for the late Stuart Williams, a Baggies legend who passed away recently. The home side are wearing black armbands in memory of the former Wales international.
  • 1'
West Brom take the kick-off and we are underway!
  • Plenty of smiles and embraces during the handshakes, not sure that's going to last long after kick off, though.
  • The teams are emerging from the tunnel, there's an electric atmosphere inside the Hawthorns. Not long till kick-off now...
  • Here's a cracking pre-match stat for you. Villa have failed to score in six of their last eight Premier League games played on a Monday but won they won the last one 6-1 against Sunderland. Read in to that what you will.
  • Less than four miles and a single Premier League place separate the two sides, with West Brom above 12th-placed Villa on goal difference. A win would take either team into the top half.
  • Christian Benteke hasn't scored a goal in his last five league appearances. Is he suffering from second season syndrome? Or will he find form again in tonight's West Midlands derby?
  • After a glance at the team news, West Brom's bench really stands out. With Nicolas Anelka, Victor Anichebe, James Morrison, Saido Berahino and Matej Vydra to call on, Steve Clarke is not short of options.
  • Aston Villa: Guzan, Bacuna, Vlaar, Baker, Clark, Westwood, El Ahmadi, Sylla, Tonev, Benteke, Kozak. Subs: Weimann, Agbonlahor, Steer, Delph, Herd, Bowery, Lowton.
  • West Brom: Myhill, Reid, McAuley, Olsson, Popov, Mulumbu, Yacob, Amalfitano, Sessegnon, Brunt, Long. Subs: Morrison, Anichebe, Luke Daniels, Vydra, Dawson, Berahino, Anelka.
