    Tim Krul

Did all that was asked of him in the first half, looking strong from crosses and authoritative in his box. Had much less to do after the break, which would have surprised him. Saved from Willian late on.

Could not produce much going forward but completed his defensive duties solidly. Cleared one Terry header off the goal-line.

    Mike Williamson

Losing John Terry in the box almost cost his side a goal as the defender headed onto the crossbar. Will be delighted with the clean sheet.

    Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa

Never inspired confidence early on. Was beaten easily by Hazard in one counter-attack and made some poor clearances. But got much better and better as the game progressed and in the end produced a number of key blocks and tackles as Newcastle defended their lead.

  • Mathieu Debuchy

    Mathieu Debuchy

Has been one of Newcastle’s better players recently and was good here again. One risky challenge on Mata could have resulted in a penalty in the first half but made some other key interventions. Always a threat down the right.

  • Yohan Cabaye

    Yohan Cabaye

Created Gouffran’s goal with an excellent set-piece delivery. A solid showing in midfield and he grew in influence as the game progressed.

  • Moussa Sissoko

    Moussa Sissoko

Booked for a late lunge on Ivanovic and had one shot saved by Cech. Powerful performance in the second half, making a real impact in midfield

  • Cheikh Tiote

    Cheikh Tiote

Limped off the pitch after 53 minutes to be replaced by Anita. Didn’t look fully fit and was lightweight at times in the midfield battle.

  • Yoan Gouffran

    Yoan Gouffran

A real threat for the hosts. Always worked hard and ran at the Blues’ backline. Came close with a low shot in the second half and deserved his goal when he struck with a diving header.

Loïc Remy Top of the Match

Came alive in the second half. Only denied the first goal by a great defensive block by Terry after some impressive skill and kept the Chelsea defence honest with his pace on the counter. Sealed the win with a great late finish.

  • Shola Ameobi

    Shola Ameobi

Quiet for much of the game as he was starved of service. Had a good spell after half-time where he laid on a good chance for Remy and led a counter-attack before being replaced by Cisse.

Neat and tidy on the ball after coming on for Tiote early in the second half. Set up Remy's goal with a good run and pass.

Came on for Ameobi and worked hard without seeing see too much of the ball.

    Petr Cech

A good performance despite conceding two goals. Made vital saves from Sissoko and Gouffran after the break, while also keeping out Remy. The only reason it stayed 0-0 as long as it did with Newcastle rampant in the second half.

  • Branislav Ivanovic

    Branislav Ivanovic

Strong defensively and good going forward – almost scoring in the first half in the aftermath of Terry hitting the bar. Was closest to Gouffran when he headed home the winner, though.

  • Ashley Cole

    Ashley Cole

Was steady enough in the Chelsea defence alongside Terry as the captain took control.

    John Terry

One of the few Chelsea players to have a good game. Came so close to scoring on two occasions in the first half. Headed one corner onto the crossbar and had another effort cleared off the line. Strong at the back.

  • Ramires

    Ramires

Chelsea lost the midfield battle and the Brazilian was poor. A weak challenge on Anita ahead of the second goal summed up a bad display.

    Eden Hazard

Good early in the game on both wings. Picked up a knock after the break which slowed him down slightly until he struck wide with a late chance.
