Live Commentary

  • That's all we have time for, but we hope that you enjoyed our coverage of Newcastle surprise 2-0 win over Chelsea, leaving Mourinho with plenty to mull over in the coming days. I've been Simon Harrison, and I hope to see you all again next time.
  • Excellent performances from several of Newcastle's defensive line, and a great substitute's impact from Anita allowed for the hosts to step up a gear and really test Chelsea on the break in the later stages. An honourable mention for Remy's outstanding finish, too.
  • Goals from Gouffran and Remy wrap up an immeasurably important three points for the Toon, especially given the tempestuous week in the north east. That's exactly what the doctor ordered following their derby day woes.
  • Nobody would have expected that outcome before the game, but Mourinho certainly won't be permitted such an abject performance to occur again any time soon. Chelsea devoid of a cutting edge or any creativity, whilst being on the receiving end of one or two controversial decisions.
  • FULL TIME! Well, what an upset! A stuttering Magpies outfit before the game must surely be one of the more confidence-filled sides now! Newcastle beat Chelsea 2-0 at St. James' Park, leaving the battle for top spot wide open for this afternoon's later fixtures!
  • 90' + 5'
IVANOVIC! The Serbian rises excellently to meet a deep cross, but a touch from Williamson deflects it behind for a corner! Krul claims the set piece, and the celebrations begin!
  • 90' + 3'
We're midway through stoppage time, and Newcastle have plenty of bodies in and around their penalty area, allowing for the likes of Remy to stay upfield and act as a rather dangerous outlet to get their side upfield.
  • 90' + 1'
Five minutes of added time in this game, but I don't think that Chelsea would score if they'd been given another 90 minutes. Devoid of ideas and creativity in this second half, Mourinho's substitutes have been ineffectual too.
  • 90'
    Yellow Card Loïc Remy
  • 90'
We're in the final minute of normal time, and there is no way that the home crowd are going to be quiet anymore! The atmosphere is bouncing inside St James' Park, and plenty of Chelsea fans are heading for the exits.
  • 89'
    Assist Vurnon Anita
  • 89'
    Goal Loïc Remy
GOOOOAL! TWO FOR NEWCASTLE! Remy has gotten it, and the crowd and players alike are going absolutely wild! He'll be booked for his celebrations, but I don't think he cares! Great finish in off the post!
  • 88'
Two minutes left to play, and Hazard spurning that chance moments ago might just suggest that this isn't going to be Chelsea's afternoon, adding ever more magnitude to the meeting of Arsenal and Liverpool later!
  • 86'
HAZARD! THAT WAS THE CHANCE! The Belgian finds himself in a pocket of space at the back post, picks his spot but finds the wrong side of the far post! He throws up his hands despairingly, he knows he should have buried that opportunity!
  • 85'
Good defending from David Luiz! The Brazilian does just enough to deflect Remy's header wide of the target, and Terry congratulates his defensive partner heartily.
  • 84'
    SubstitutionYoan Gouffran Gabriel Obertan
  • 84'
Eto'o goes down on the edge of the penalty box, and wants a free-kick but Lee Probert instead penalising Ivanovic for a challenge on Yanga-Mbiwa. Frustrations rising for the visiting side, but they need to focus on the task at hand if they are to net against this resolute and stout Magpies' defending.
  • 82'
Newcastle have almost their entire eleven men behind the ball, with the majority camped on the edge of their penalty area. Last ditch, desperate stuff from the Toon at times, but they're looking to drag themselves over the finish line by any means necessary.
  • 81'
Schurrle nods wide at the back post, and the German has his head in his hands, he thinks he should have done better than. Chelsea just might have left themselves with too much to do in order to get back into this match. Just ten minutes remaining!
  • 80'
GREAT CLEARANCE FROM DEBUCHY! The right-back is on hand to deflect an Eto'o effort away from danger, as Newcastle continue to hang on! Countless goal line clearances in this game!
  • 79'
Tame effort from Remy! The loanee cuts inside from the left, onto his favoured right boot, but can only muster a feeble effort that doesn't even test Cech whatsoever.
  • 77'
    Yellow Card Ramires
  • 77'
Newcastle look lively and vibrant on the counter-attack, a big contrast from the first half. Pardew's side have really made the step up in the second 45 minutes, and Chelsea look a little clueless regarding how to cope with the motivated likes of Gouffran and Remy.
  • 76'
Chelsea aren't getting things their own way here, as now Oscar complains as he is penalised for allegedly taking the ball out of play. First the possible handball from Yanga-Mbiwa, and now they're denied a corner. A quarter of an hour left for them to salvage something!
  • 75'
    Yellow Card David Luiz
  • 74'
Yanga-Mbiwa steps in again! Great interplay from Chelsea, as Hazard knocks the ball smartly around the corner for Eto'o to run onto, but the Frenchman is at the right place at the right time yet again. He hoofs clear!
  • 73'
Yanga-Mbiwa makes the block! The Frenchman throws himself in front of an Eto'o strike, to deny the substitute from having an immediate impact. Last ditch stuff, but that's great defending. Eto'o appeals for handball!
  • 72'
Great challenge from Terry! The captain covers across well to slide in and deny Remy, as Newcastle look for a second goal! The atmosphere is tremendous, the noise gets positively deafening whenever the Magpies press upfield.
  • 71'
That switch for Chelsea shows that Mourinho isn't too sure whether his current attacking options could have scythed their way through the resilient and well disciplined Toon rearguard, but if any side has the creative talents available to create something out of nothing, it's Chelsea.
  • 70'
    SubstitutionFrank Lampard Andre Schürrle
  • 69'
That goal was coming, Newcastle have been a different animal in this second half, forcing Chelsea back at every opportunity and really silencing their creative threats. Mourinho's men have a lot of work to do if they're to come away from this with maximum points now!
  • 68'
    Assist Yohan Cabaye
  • 68'
    Goal Yoan Gouffran
GOOOOOAL! GOUFFRAN HEADS THE HOSTS AHEAD! It's an excellent free-kick delivery from Cabaye, and the diminutive forward manages to stoop to nod home into the bottom corner! 1-0 to Newcastle!
  • 67'
Chelsea are struggling to gain any momentum here, with Newcastle threatening on the break and currently having an answer for everything the visitors throw at them. Eto'o might be the next substitute to enter the field of play, Chelsea need something a little different to test the Toon.
  • 65'
GOUFFRAN! The French forward blasts an effort towards Cech's near post from the edge of the area, but he's denied as the goalkeeper palm it around the woodwork. The resulting corner is fruitless.
  • 64'
The home crowd are in good spirits and good voice, and they genuinely believe that their side have Chelsea on the ropes here! No chances for the away side in about ten minutes.
  • 63'
Newcastle really have their tails up here! Those two chances in quick succession have really proved to be warning signs for Chelsea, who will need to really dig in here to get a favourable result. Both managers ring the changes, as they try to manipulate this game as best suits them.
  • 62'
    SubstitutionShola Ameobi Papiss Cissé
  • 62'
    SubstitutionFernando Torres Samuel Eto'o
  • 62'
    SubstitutionJuan Mata Willian
  • 61'
REMY! From the resulting corner, another Frenchman has another chance for Newcastle! It's Remy this time, who smashes an effort directly at Cech from six yards out! If he'd have put that anywhere else it'd have been a goal!
  • 60'
SISSOKO! SO VERY CLOSE FOR NEWCASTLE! The former Toulouse man powers his way down the right hand side, before sliding an effort narrowly past Cech's back post, courtesy of an important touch from the Czech international!
  • 59'
Good clearance from Terry, before Ameobi goes close! The usual derby day hero powered past the likes of Luiz there, but his intended ball to the back post to find Remy was thwarted by a good interception from the Chelsea centre-back!
  • 57'
We're rapidly approaching the 60 minute mark, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Mourinho making a change in the near future. With Schurrle on the bench, Mata could be the sacrifice made, with Eto'o a possible choice later in the game.
  • 55'
Hazard looks to have picked up a knock on his ankle, as the Belgian landed rather awkwardly on his ankle, after playing a nice flick around the corner. He limps off the field, but should be able to continue, even if he is moving slightly gingerly.
  • 54'
Chelsea are still being frustrated by a disciplined Newcastle side, and it appears that the hosts are merely keen to hit their opponents on the break whenever possible. The London-based club aren't enjoying the success they'd perhaps hope for with such a talented trio behind Torres.
  • 53'
    SubstitutionCheikh Tiote Vurnon Anita
  • 52'
Newcastle are almost playing with five men at the back here, as the hosts really try to frustrate Chelsea. The visiting side thrive on their diminutive playmakers getting in between the lines and into pockets of space, but the Toon aren't allowing that to happen.
  • 51'
Well cleared by Cabaye! Yanga-Mbiwa manages to half clear Ivanovic' near post cross, before his compatriot is forced to made a second clearance to get the ball out of danger with Torres lurking.
  • 50'
The crowd is growing a little restless, and rightly so. Very frustrating to watch a game that is littering with so many nearly moments. Debuchy is perhaps the most guilty party, the amount of misplaced balls the France international has made is getting ridiculous.
  • 48'
Good clarance from Luiz! Sissoko uses a delightful drag back to carve out some space for himself, before laying the ball on for Debuchy to overlap. The Brazilian steps out to intercept, hoofing the loose ball clear.
  • 47'
TORRES! The Spaniard races through on goal, taking the ball around Krul, but is halted by the offside flag! It's the right decision by the linesman, but a goal really wouldn't have hurt this game! It needs a spark.
  • 46'
We're back underway in the second half, and let's hope that there are less errors and more goals! Both sides have been as bad as each other in terms of unforced mistakes.
  • The second half is delicately poised, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Mourinho shuffle his offensive pack rather early on in the second half. The two Spaniards haven't had a great deal of luck in the final third thus far.
  • Chelsea have gone closest, with John Terry and Fernando Torres striking the crossbar in quick succession, but Krul is yet to make a telling save. Newcastle have forced Cech into two rather comfortable stops, and will be keen to give Remy and Gouffran more of the ball in the second half.
  • HALF TIME! Lee Probert calls time on a tight first half, which has been filled with errors and misplaced balls. Newcastle won't be disheartened by their first 45 minutes, as they've held firm, but Mourinho will undoubtedly be keen to see more from his attacking four.
  • 45' + 1'
Poor effort from Debuchy! The full-back shows exactly why he should stay a little deeper, by spiralling an awful long range effort way over the bar. Not a strike he'll want to be reminded of.
  • 45'
One minute of added time has been awarded by the fourth official, and it doesn't look likely that there will be a goal before we head in for the half time break!
  • 44'
Only a couple of minutes until the break, and I have a sneaking suspicion that Mourinho will have some criticisms to release. His side have moved the ball nicely at times, but have really struggled to stretch Newcastle in order to create any gaps to exploit. Toon are staying resilient.
  • 43'
Foul by Mata! The Spaniard turns the ball home, but the referee had already pulled play back for a rather obvious shove on Williamson. That little incident was testament to how scrappy and unrefined this game has been at times.
  • 42'
    Yellow Card Moussa Sissoko
  • 41'
Well, what an awful attempted ball from Tiote! The Ivory Coast international looks to float a ball in behind Cole, to allow Sissoko to burst forward, but it doesn't even bounce as it makes its way out of play. Terrible ball from the Newcastle man.
  • 39'
Good defensive header from Terry! He's been aerially dominant this afternoon, and this time it's in his own penalty area, as the Englishman nods away a Debuchy cross. Tough to know which side will grab the breakthrough goal here, it's been tight!
  • 38'
SISSOKO! Good effort from the Frenchman! He finds himself on the left hand side of midfield, drives into the area and stings the palms of Cech with a low drive. The Chelsea keeper was almost wrong-footed there!
  • 37'
OFF THE LINE! It looked like a combination of Krul and Yanga-Mbiwa there, as Chelsea saw yet another set piece almost creep over the line off the head of Terry!
  • 36'
Chelsea have managed an average of over two goals in their last five visits to Newcastle, but there's no real sign of Mourinho's men running away with this one. They've looked the brighter side creatively, but aside from hitting the crossbar, Krul hasn't been too troubled.
  • 35'
Newcastle are moving the ball quite nicely at times, with the crowd sounding their appreciation, but it's never in good areas. The likes of Gouffran and Remy are getting the ball sporadically, but they're never able to exercise a positive option, they're always heading away from goal.
  • 33'
Cech is forced to clear desperately, with Gouffran closing him down, before Tiote and Oscar clash while challenging for the falling ball. The Brazilian looks to be a little worse for wear, but both players will be set to continue after a spot of treatment.
  • 31'
A tight first half an hour in this game, with neither side trading heavy blows, but plenty of half chances and niggling errors. I shouldn't suppose that Pardew will be too discouraged so far, but Mourinho might be expecting a little better from Torres, he's been anonymous.
  • 30'
CABAYE! Cech is forced into his first real save of the afternoon! The ball sat up nicely for the former Lille midfielder, and he forces Cech to get down quickly to his left hand side to smother the effort. Warning signs for Chelsea, perhaps?
  • 29'
Dangerous ball! Hazard manages to work his way down the right flank, before thumping a low delivery through the corridor of uncertainty, but nobody is there to meet it. If there had been a blue shirt at the back post, I think that would have been the game's breakthrough goal!
  • 28'
Too predictable from Santon! The Italian is picked out excellently with a crossfield ball, but Ivanovic knew that the Newcastle full-back would want to cut back onto his right foot, and therefore steals the ball with ease.
  • 26'
Good block from Yanga-Mbiwa! The Frenchman slides it to turn away the strike, to the applause of the St James' Park faithful. They've been in quite good voice so far in this game, despite the recent poor mood around the club.
  • 25'
This opening half an hour has been absolutely littered with individual errors. Whether it's an overhit pass, or one directed too close to an opposition player, both sides have been guilty of gifting the ball away too often. Let's hope that things can get a little more refined as the game progresses.
  • 24'
Looking back on that half chance for Cole, Chelsea may possibly have had a claim for a penalty, as a stray leg from Debuchy looked to bring down Mata. Lee Probert didn't see anything amiss, however!
  • 23'
COLE! Hazard and Mata combine well inside the penalty area, exchanging possession with some well-timed flicks, before the Belgian is forced to release the ball in search of his full-back. Cole strikes hard and low at goal, perhaps hoping that Krul will parry it back out, but the goalkeeper holds.
  • 21'
Poor delivery from Lampard! Hazard is brought down clumsily by Sissoko, who is presumably being played on the right side of midfield for his pace alone, but the England international fails to put in a telling ball. It loops over Krul's crossbar, much to the Dutchman's relief.
  • 19'
Almost an opening for Newcastle! Gouffran controls well with his back to goal, before fending off Luiz and feeding a ball in behind Cole in search of Ameobi. However, there was slightly too much on it, leading to his teammate quite visibly showing his frustration as the ball ran out of play.
  • 18'
Well claimed by Krul! The Dutchman rises well to take the ball away from the intended target of Torres. Yanga-Mbiwa falls to the turf, rubbing his head with some discomfort, but he's quickly back to his feet despite complaining briefly to the referee.
  • 17'
Good work from Cabaye! The France international works back well to make a very important block, preventing Ivanovic's intended cross from finding a blue shirt in the penalty area. The resulting corner comes to nothing for the away side.
  • 16'
Chelsea are beginning to get back on top now, with the likes of Cole and Ivanovic able to really press on and gain a numerical advantage in certain areas. Hazard has faded from the game slightly, but the pacey Belgian needs only one opportunity to get onto the ball to make an impact.
  • 15'
Almost a mistake from Yanga-Mbiwa! The returning central defender slices a clearance entirely, and it would have bobbled its way through to Torres, but for a good header from Williamson. Shaky stuff!
  • 13'
CROSSBAR! AND AGAIN! Chelsea go close twice in quick succession, as Terry heads onto the crossbar, before a deflect Torres overhead kick also clips the bar as it loops out for another corner!
  • 12'
Shola Ameobi calls Cech into action for the first time this afternoon, but the Czech Republic international won't need to make an easier save than that during this afternoon. The diagonal ball from Cabaye picks out the physically imposing striker, but he can't get any power on the header.
  • 10'
The first ten minutes of the game have passed us by, and it's been a close affair so far. No chances of yet, and both sides have equally shared dominance either side of the five minute mark. Hard to predict how this one will turn out.
  • 9'
The Toon are finally enjoying some sustained pressure, testing the visiting back line with some good direct balls in search of Shola Ameobi. Chelsea are standing firm at the moment, however, with some good tracking from Oscar preventing Santon from cutting inside from the left.
  • 7'
Still no test for either goalkeeper, with a midfield battle being the real theme of the game thus far. Generally, Chelsea are able to move the ball at speed, but are slowed by either a cynical foul or a poor ball. Newcastle just showing signs that they're a part of this match now.
  • 6'
Chelsea's creative trio are already being able to link up well, getting in between the lines with some intricate short passes. It's tough for Newcastle's players to know when to take their man or pass him on, Chelsea are looking rather rosy at the moment.
  • 4'
LUIZ! The Brazilian has an audacious attempt from range, but Lee Probert notes that there was indeed no contact from the wall, it was simply a terrible effort. All Chelsea, so far.
  • 3'
Hazard is already having an impact on this game, bursting beyond Debuchy before Williamson is forced to bring down the Belgian around 30 yards from goal. Another chance of Chelsea to deliver a telling ball, Newcastle are yet to break out of their own half.
  • 2'
Great start for Chelsea! The visitors hold onto possession with confidence as they move the ball around the back four, before an injection of pace from Hazard and the overlapping Cole tests Debuchy. The former Lille man does well however, sliding in to deflect the ball off the Chelsea left-back for a goal kick.
  • 1'
We're underway with this first Premier League game of the afternoon! Newcastle break from their huddle looking rather motivated, but so does Fernando Torres. It will be interesting to see if he can continue his impressive form. Newcastle are in their black and white stripes, with Chelsea in blue.
  • There seems to be more attention surrounding this game in terms of the media furore surrounding Mike Ashley and the fans and press of Newcastle. Enough of that, anyhow, as a minute's silence is held in respect for the approaching Remembrance Sunday.
  • With three points here this afternoon, the visitors can really put some pressure on league leaders Arsenal, who will be heading into a tough fixture this evening in the form of Liverpool. Mourinho will undoubtedly have this in mind, and three points will presumably be the only outcome that the Portuguese wishes to even consider at this moment in time.
  • Ten minutes until kick-off, and it's tough to see how Chelsea won't be able to get a favourable result here today. The hosts are struggling to find the net, by all accounts, and haven't managed to make St James' Park a fortress this season either. An in-form Torres, paired with a creative trio of Hazard, Oscar and Mata really is scary - with equally worrying options available on the bench too.
  • Much has been spoken about Fernando Torres, given the Spaniard's impressive performance against Man City last time out in the Premier League, but some eyes may stray to his compatriot, Juan Mata. Andre Schurrle has been given a seat on the bench, with last season's maestro being deployed seemingly on the right hand side of the trio behind Torres.
  • Chelsea substitutes: Mikel, Schurrle, Willian, Schwarzer, Cahill, Azpilicueta, Eto'o.
  • Chelsea starting line-up: Cech; Ivanovic, Terry, David Luiz, Cole; Ramires, Lampard; Mata, Oscar, Hazard; Torres.
  • Newcastle substitutes: Anita, Ben Arfa, Elliot, Obertan, Sammy Ameobi, Tavernier, Cisse.
  • Newcastle starting line-up: Krul; Debuchy, Williamson, Yanga-Mbiwa, Santon; Cabaye, Tiote; Remy, Sissoko, Gouffran; Shola Ameobi.
  • TEAM NEWS: Chelsea are only missing the long term absentee of Marco van Ginkel, while Massadio Haidara and Paul Dummett miss out following midweek injury woes. Shola Ameobi gets a start for the Magpies, although many Newcastle fans will presumably think that he should have been given more of a chance last week, given his reputation for derby day goals.
  • I'm Simon Harrison, and I will be leading you through all of the action, as Chelsea look to continue their current run of excellent form. Five wins from five for Mourinho's men says it all, they current have the momentum compared to the stuttering Toon. Winless in three matches, the home side will be keen to pick up at least a share of the spoils this afternoon.
  • Hello and welcome to coverage of the Premier League's early kick-off for today, as Chelsea travel north to face Newcastle. The hosts have been in something of a media storm lately, and will want to forget their derby defeat to Sunderland last weekend, so three points would be ideal for Alan Pardew's men.
