Player Ratings: Southampton 2-0 Fulham

First-half goals from Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez gave the hosts all three points in a comfortable victory on Saturday evening, the Cottagers offering very little in response

    Artur Boruc

His distribution wasn't great but had little else to do as Southampton kept Fulham at bay.

  • Nathaniel Clyne

    Nathaniel Clyne

Bombed forward as if he were winger at times, having little to do at the back.

    Dejan Lovren

As his centre-back partner dominated the Fulham attack who created little. Headed wide when he might have done better after the break.

    Jose Rocha Fonte

Won his headers and kept the ball on the floor when he could. Was never really tested by Fulham, but did make one important block to deny Sidwell.

  • Luke Shaw

    Luke Shaw

Didn't get forward as much as he normally does, while his final ball also wasn't as good as it can be. Solid at the back though.

  • Morgan Schneiderlin

    Morgan Schneiderlin

Unlucky to see a shot blocked off the line after he followed up well. Played a bit further forward than usual and, at times, Saints missed his drive from defence to attack. Got slightly slopping the second half.

  • Victor Wanyama

    Victor Wanyama

Went close with left footed shot. Tackled back well, as ever, keeping the likes of Ruiz and Berbatov quiet. Headed a good chance wide.

  • James Ward-Prowse

    James Ward-Prowse

Dropped deep to get on ball whenever he could. Good delivery for the first goal and, in general, whipped in several very dangerous balls. Defensively sound, too.

  • Adam Lallana

Adam Lallana Top of the Match

Pressed Fulham very high with great intensity. Might have scored early on after stealing the ball from Senderos. Partially set-up Saints second with a brilliant cross-field ball to Lambert. Lost a bit of urgency after the break, but found it right at the death with two great moves.

  • Rickie Lambert

    3.50

    Rickie Lambert

Looked sharp after his rest against Manchester United. Found space in Fulham's box to head home Saints' opener. Was denied a second by the post, and then by Stekelenburg. Assisted Rodriguez's goal with a neat header across goal.

  • Jay Rodriguez

    Jay Rodriguez

Flicked on Ward-Prowse's corner for Lambert's opening goal. Should have scored himself after a fine break moments after, but did get his goal just before the break. Went close to a second with a acrobatic overhead-kick attempt. Brought off late on after running his socks off.

    Jack Cork

Replaced Ward-Prowse very late in the game.

    Guilherme Do Prado

Came on late on for the hard-working Rodriguez.

  • Maarten Stekelenburg

    Maarten Stekelenburg

Saved well from Lallana early on. Made another important save to keep out Rodriguez just after Saints' opener, and then again to deny Lambert a second later on.

  • Philippe Senderos

Philippe Senderos Flop of the Match

Had a bit of a nightmare. Made a mess of an early clearance and was then caught napping by Lallana before a good Saints chance. Beaten too easily by Rodriguez for another good opportunity. Nearly allowed Lambert in with a miss-kick late on.

  • Sascha Riether
    2
    3
    2.00

    Sascha Riether

Defended fairly well against the tricky Lallana & Shaw but failed to offer anything going forward. Withdrawn at half-time.

  • Amorebieta
    2
    4
    2.50

    Amorebieta

Made an important block off the line to deny Schneiderlin. Part of a defence that too often lost their men from set-pieces and crosses, though.

  • Steve Sidwell
    2
    2
    2.50

    Steve Sidwell

Made a few sloppy passes and was unable to ever really get a grip of the game. Worked hard to get back and help out defensively, and did improve after the break.

  • Pajtim Kasami
    1
    4
    2.00

    Pajtim Kasami

Found it hard to find space on the ball against Southampton's high-intensity midfield, and thus had little effect. Still, could have done more with what he had.

  • Kieran Richardson
    3
    2
    2.50

    Kieran Richardson

Was pinned back by Clyne for the most part and thus had no effect going forward. Let Lallana stroll past him for a good chance late on.

  • Scott Parker

    2
    2.50

    Scott Parker

Was caught on the ball a couple of times, in particular by Lallana who caused his some problems. Made a few important tackles though.

  • Dimitar Berbatov
    4
    6
    2.00

    Dimitar Berbatov

It was the kind of game that Berbatov can go quiet in - and that he did. Barely had a touch of the ball.

  • Bryan Ruiz
    6
    2
    3.00

    Bryan Ruiz

Showed a few nice touches but didn't get enough ball to cause Saints any real problems. Was the one player who threatened to do something dangerous. Brought off late on.

  • Darren Bent

    1.50

    Darren Bent

Much like his strike parter was non-existent for the most part and was duly replaced with just under 15 minutes left.

Substitutions

  • Aaron Hughes

    Aaron Hughes

Came on for Riether at the break and helped with damage limitation - though Saints did take their foot off the gas a bit.

  • Alexander Kacaniklic
    2
    2

    Alexander Kacaniklic

A late substitute. Added a bit of flair to Fulham's attack.

  • Hugo Rodallega

    3

    Hugo Rodallega

Replaced the quiet Bent with around 15 minutes remaining but had no impact.
