Live Commentary

  • That's my cue, it's been a pleasure. Bye for now.
  • Job done in the end for Spain, who outclass and outscore the South Americans without ever having to click into top gear. Alvaro Negredo and the impressive Santi Cazorla got the goals for la Roja, as Ecuador, despite improving in the second half, can have no complaints about the result.
  • 90' + 3'
And that's it! Ecuador 0-2 Spain is our final score.
  • 90' + 2'
Oh dear. Noboa seemed to have it all, with options either side of him on a 3-on-2 break, but chooses to go for goal himself, and absolutely shanks it over the bar.
  • 90'
We're into the first of three added minutes.
  • 88'
Arroyo has the ball in the back of the net, but it's immediately ruled off for offside, much to his frustration. Correct call.
  • 86'
Good defending from Albiol, under pressure from his man, to get the ball away from danger on a bouncing ball into the area.
  • 84'
Navas again causing problems, but his final ball is lacking, as a low centre across the face of goal misses both Llorente and the far post.
  • 83'
    SubstitutionS. Castillo O. Bagui
  • 82'
Good strong drive from Navas down the right, his first cross picks out Thiago, whose shot it blocked. The ball is worked back to Navas quickly, but he cannot pick out a teammate with his second attempt at a cross.
  • 80'
Time is slipping away from Ecuador, and what has looked inevitable for some time is nearing closer to reality, as Spain look to close out the game on the back of a 2-0 lead.
  • 78'
    SubstitutionSanti Cazorla Koke
  • 78'
On comes Koke in place of Cazorla. Great game from the Arsenal man, a very heavy hand in both Spain goals.
  • 77'
"Cambiar Santi" is the word coming from the touchline. Looks like Cazorla will make way soon.
  • 75'
The match has slowed to a crawl in the past minute or two. Spain having a bit of trouble getting the ball out of their own half, believe it or not!
  • 74'
    Yellow Card Javi Martínez
  • 73'
Inigo Martinez, by the way, has joined the fray in place of Sergio Ramos, who had a very strong game.
  • 71'
Valdes takes no prisoners, getting first to a ball in the box and punching clear, clattering Arroyo in the process.
  • 70'
    SubstitutionJ. Rojas L. Saritama
  • 70'
    SubstitutionSergio Ramos Íñigo Martínez
  • 69'
Ecuador definitely giving a better account of themselves in the second half. There's far more composure in the way they approach their attacks.
  • 67'
OH DEAR...Rojas, after doing so well to beat Arbeloa to the byline, spots Casillas off his line and clips back in towards Caicedo. But the cross is so poor, that it's all that Ibarra can do to keep it going out for a throw in on the near side!
  • 64'
A deserved goal for Cazorla, who's been the best player on the pitch today. Hard to see Ecuador mounting a comeback.
  • 63'
    Assist Tello
  • 63'
    Goal Santi Cazorla
CAZORLA!!! Clinical stuff to double Spain's advantage! The Arsenal man plays a one-two to bypass his man and drills home neatly into the bottom corner from the edge of the area!
  • 62'
    SubstitutionFelipe Caicedo N. Mina
  • 62'
    SubstitutionEdison Vicente Méndez M. Arroyo
  • 62'
    SubstitutionEnner Valencia R. Ibarra
  • 61'
POST, ECUADOR HIT THE POST! Out of nowhere, a great cross from substitute Noboa picks out Valencia, who rises well unmarked, but hits the frame of the goal with his header! Valdes beaten!
  • 59'
Rojas penalized for handball, a fairly obvious call after beating Arbeloa to the ball.
  • 57'
Spain killing the game in the centre of the park with a series of sideways and backwards passing. Restore, reset, recycle, that's the nature of their use of the ball. Ecuador can't get a look in.
  • 55'
Little change in the nature of this game to start the second period, but Ecuador do look to have a little more oomph in the way they play.
  • 53'
And again from Ramos, this time preventing Caicedo from getting a look. Excellent anticipation from the Real Madrid man.
  • 52'
    SubstitutionP. Quiñónez C. Noboa
  • 51'
Important interception from Ramos, who stops Mendez from latching onto a ball from Castillo and breaking clean through.
  • 50'
    SubstitutionIker Casillas Víctor Valdés
  • 49'
To recap our chances at half time - Llorente on for Negredo, Navas replaces Silva and Thiago spells Iniesta. It looks like Valdes will also take the gloves from Casillas shortly.
  • 48'
Cazorla wastes a decent set-piece opportunity from 20 yards by blasting the ball well into orbit.
  • 46'
    SubstitutionNegredo Jesús Navas González
  • 46'
    SubstitutionDavid Silva Fernando Llorente
  • 46'
    SubstitutionIniesta Thiago Alcántara
  • 46'
    Here we go again!
  • It seems like business as usual for Spain - plenty of possession, a goal to the good, and little in the way of a threat from the opposition. Ecuador have a lot of rethinking to do at the break. 1-0 the score to Spain.
  • 45' + 3'
And that's it for now - half time.
  • 45' + 2'
Hello...Casillas forced to earn his corn! Ecuador methodically work the ball around the edge of the box, and Mendez fires away from the edge of the D, but Spain's skipper reacts very well to tip around the post acrobatically!
  • 45' + 1'
    Yellow Card Edison Vicente Méndez
  • 45'
Two minutes of time added on to end the half.
  • 44'
Matters petering out towards the end of the half as Ecuador send another long range effort harmlessly wide.
  • 42'
Mendez with a decent float into the mixer, but two Ecuador heads jump for the ball and Achiller ends up planting it wide.
  • 41'
Ramos takes out Paredes, leading to an interesting free-kick for Ecuador about 40 yards out.
  • 40'
Quinonez attacks a loose ball from 40 yards and takes it full on the half-volley. And it powers right over Casillas' goal and into the stands.
  • 38'
Rojas and Ayovi get the crowd excited by holding possession near the left corner flag, but the latter wastes what little remained of the attack with a woeful cross that sails embarrassingly high.
  • 36'
The Barca fullback looks to be fine, he's back on his feet and the game resumes.
  • 35'
Jordi Alba barrels into Castillo and goes down in a heap. No blame attached to the Ecuadorian midfielder, but Alba does need on-field treatment as he clutches his knee in some pain.
  • 33'
Negredo tries and tries and tries to bring down a long pass from Silva, but he is eventually swarmed off the ball by four Ecuador defenders.
  • 31'
Good hustle from Mendez to chase down a aimless pass and keep it in play ahead of the byeline, but his effort takes him too far away from the ball, and Albiol regains possession for Spain.
  • 29'
Again, the South American side are headless chickens in attack. Paredes runs straight into Martinez when trying to orchestrate a 3 on 3 break.
  • 27'
Spain have not been at their most dynamic, but have created their chances, and now, deservedly, have taken one. Ecuador have been deplorable so far, really, no surprise to see them concede.
  • 25'
    Assist Santi Cazorla
  • 25'
    Goal Negredo
AND NEGREDO SHOWS HOW IT"S DONE BACK AT THE OTHER END! All credit to this must go to Cazorla though. The Arsenal man played a one-two with Silva, and forced Banguera to save his piledriver from 20 yards. It was not the most convincing parry, and Cazorla is quickest to the loose ball, squares to Negredo, who does no miss from eight yards.
  • 24'
CACIEDO! CLose shave at the other end, as the forward comes within inches of connecting on a free-kick into the area. He was completely unmarked too - a proper touch and that was going in.
  • 23'
POST AGAIN! Iniesta unleashes from 20 yards out, and has Banguera beaten, but the ball smacks off the pretty much the exact spot struck by Silva earlier!
  • 21'
Spain's midfield is in complete control, but Negredo looks surrounded by yellow shirts and is struggling to find space - as a result, possession keeps recycling around the 18 yard area.
  • 19'
ROJAS BREAKS THROUGH on the left, but is swiftly met by Casillas, who races off his line to slide the ball away from danger. Offside called anyway, but a bit better from the hosts.
  • 17'
Every time Ecuador manage to advance past the halfway line, the crowd go crazy, but their joy is always short-lived. The hosts seem to excited on the ball and end up losing it, for the umpteenth time.
  • 15'
OUCH...Mina takes the ball full in a very painful area, and is down on the deck trying to catch his bearings.
  • 12'
We're quickly back underway, with the visitors on the ball.
  • 11'
And right on cue, the match is halted for the tribute to Christian Benitez. Led by the stadium announcer, a standing ovation observed by all on and off the pitch. Great touch.
  • 11'
Ecuador get some pulses racing through the crowd with a rare foray forward, but Casillas is out quickly to catch a ball into the box.
  • 9'
Great play from Tello, zooming down the left, leaving his man for dead and squaring to Negredo about eight yards out, but the finish is sorely lacking. Spooned miles over.
  • 7'
It's really hard for Ecuador to advance the ball out of their own half as Noboa coughs up possession to Martinez near the centre circle to keep matters pinned right back in their half.
  • 5'
Typically efficient possession from the World and European champions, keeping the hosts on the back foot.
  • 3'
SILVA BENDS ONTO THE POST! Spain carve through the home side's defence, and the Manchester City man squares up from 10 yards out, but with his left peg, cannot steer it that half a foot inside the woodwork!
  • 1'
    And we're off!
  • The teams are out on the pitch as we go through the national anthems.
  • Tonight's friendly takes place in something of a sombre mood, with the tragic passing of Ecuadorian forward Christian Benitez hanging over proceedings. The 27-year-old died due to cardiac arrest, with recent revelations by doctors stating that the striker played with undiagnosed heart problems. As tribute, tonight's match will be stopped at they symbolic time of 11 minutes to remember Benitez, who of course wore #11 for his national team.
