  City's cup goalkeeper must be getting used to a pretty easy lifestyle. Usually a substitute back-up for Joe Hart, he was so under-worked that he probably could have been sat on the bench next to the England man today, much like in the win over Leeds in the last round.

  A couple of clumsy errors in good positions saw the crowd get on his back a little near the beginning, but he soon had them cheering as he doubled City's lead and then played a role in the third.

  Joleon Lescott

  The form of young summer signing Matija Nastasic has seen Lescott drop down the pecking order, and the hammering of Barnsley will not have provided much chance of winning his place back. That is not to say he was poor, but he had just about nothing to do. Almost produced a calamitous error in the second half, but he put the fire out himself.

  The experienced Ivorian defender has undergone somewhat of a resurgence in 2013 having played a fair amount of football. He, like Lescott, will probably struggle to recall many easier outings.

  Played a very disciplined role at the back and generally stayed grounded despite City's dominance. Completely bossed Cywka while he was on and he had a pretty comfortable evening.

  David Silva

  The Spaniard was quiet in patches, but around the Barnsley penalty area he exploded into life whenever the opportunity arose. He played a role in three goals, including two assists, before scoring City's fifth. The visitors could do nothing to stop his influential display.

  Unspectacular from the England international, but he did his job well as he kept the ball moving when he received possession and acted as a reliable shield in front of the defence.

  Samir Nasri

  One of the Frenchman's more impressive performances of this season. Coming in off the left, Nasri's crossing proved effective, as did his linking up with Kolarov and Dzeko. Found beating Wiseman so easy until he was eventually replaced by Sinclair as he appeared to have picked up an injury.

  Yaya Touré

  Toure seemed to leave much of the creating to Silva as he sat a bit deeper, often looking to spread the ball out to the wings. Nevertheless, he was still effective further up and he played a crucial role in the first goal, chipping an outrageous pass over the defence for Silva.

  Carlos Tévez Top of the Match

  Alleged driving indiscretions found Tevez's name in the newspapers for all the wrong reasons during the week, but that did not seem to be playing on his mind as he steered City towards the FA Cup semi-finals by bagging a very impressive hat-trick. Just for good measure, he got an assist for Kolarov's goal, lending to a fantastic performance.

  Edin Dzeko

  The Bosnian was instrumental in a great deal of what City did in attack and he will be disappointed he was not able to get a goal of his own, because he deserved one. He combined excellently with Silva and Tevez, and the Barnsley defence could do nothing to curb his effectiveness.

  The young midfielder's first involvement saw a shot of his almost go out for a throw-in. After that he mostly played the ball short as he slotted in next to Barry.

  Came on for the final 15 minutes as hat-trick-hero Tevez asked to be replaced. By the time he entered the pitch the match was already won, but he had time to crash a terrific strike against the post.

  After his summer move from Swansea, Sinclair effectively took on Adam Johnson's mantle of being City's forgotten man, but he got on the pitch for a decent stint against Barnsley. He was fairly quiet, however.

  Former Manchester United goalkeeper Steele will consider himself unlucky in terms of having a shaky defence in front of him. Did well to tip Silva's early effort on to the post, but he was undone by Tevez slotting in the rebound. Could have done little else to prevent City's other goals.

  Martin Cranie

  Up against Dzeko from the start, Cranie rarely looked comfortable. First of all, he gave away a cheap free kick for a wild tackle on the Bosnian when the ball was there to be won, and then he let Tevez slip away from him for the opening goal. Failed to cope throughout the match and he will have been glad to hear the full-time whistle.

  Stephen Foster Flop of the Match

  The defender found himself fully involved in the match from the opening stages as he battled away with Dzeko. When facing the forward in close-quarters early on he dealt well with him, but the movement of City's attack was too much for him, most notably for the hosts' opening goal. As the match went on, Dzeko's superiority was obvious.

  Scott Wiseman

  Looked confident taking the ball out from the back at times, but his poor positioning was often exploited by City as they played quick one-twos around him. He was completely caught out for Kolarov's strike, leaving Tunnicliffe with the task of trying to halt the Serb.

  Kennedy was generally the least busy of Barnsley's back line as the majority of the Premier League champions' attack went down the left. However, when City did progress down their right, Kennedy was run ragged by Tevez and the second goal came from that area.

  David Perkins

  Undoubtedly Barnsley's most noticeable player on the day, but that was purely for his abnormally white hair. The midfielder threatened to create openings on occasion, before gifting possession straight back to City. He also produced some sloppy passing in and around his own penalty area.

  Upon making his return to the Etihad Stadium, Etuhu had made it known that he was targeting a shirt swap with Yaya Toure come the end of the match. Perhaps he was more concentrated on that rather than winning as he hardly touched the ball. In defence of the former City man, his team-mates rarely gave him it.

  Ryan Tunnicliffe

  After an encouraging start at the Etihad, the on-loan Manchester United midfielder became rather ineffectual. City dominated, so Tunnicliffe spent most of his time chasing shadows while he failed to spot the run of Kolarov for the Serbian's goal.

  Operating from the left of midfied, Cywka had his fair share of possession, but time and time again his first touch was dreadful. Endured quite a struggle against Zabaleta.

  With Harewood playing as the target man, Dagnall was tasked with scurrying about around him and hopefully feeding the ball through. Unfortunately for Barnsley, Dagnall too often tried to run with the ball himself and he was invariably stopped with ease by City's highly experience defence.

  Holding the ball up was the name of the game for Harewood, and he looked to be doing a decent job towards the start of the match. However, as the game went on, the immense gulf in ability between the two sides became more and more obvious, meaning the support and service for Harewood completely dried up.
