Two minutes added on at the end of the first half...

Ashley Cole is bundled to ground by Marouane Fellaini and responds by almost stroking the face of the Belgium midfielder with a swipe of the arm. All very strange. Fellaini, in agony of course after such an horrific attack, needs to leave the field to be treated. Meanwhile, paper aeroplanes continue to be thrown on the pitch. Arrgghh.

Eden Hazard is given sight of goal for one of the first times so far this afternoon, and somehow gets a shot away at Joe Hart despite having three players in front of him. The ball swerves as it flies towards the England keeper but he’s able to hold on.

James Goldman reports from Wembley: “The Belgians love chips with mayonnaise, but that one from Danny Welbeck came with a side order of class and a helping of aplomb. A goal of rare quality and one largely out of keeping with a drab encounter. We’re going to win this tournament, aren’t we?”

ENGLAND GOAL: Options in attack for the France game, Roy Hodgson looks a happy man. Danny Welbeck passes his pre-Euro test by beating Simon Mignolet with an uber-cool chip after being put through by Ashley Young, just seconds after Moussa Dembele is easily dispossessed. Young-Carroll worked well last week, now Young-Welbeck. Who needs Wazza?

GOAL!! England 1 (Welbeck) Belgium 0

Crunch! Scott Parker is next to enter the referee’s book following a poorly timed lunge on future Tottenham team-mate Jan Vertonghen. A deserved yellow, it has to be said.

Duncan Hay on Twitter: “What a joke Mertens is, the theatrics have more chance of injuring him than the foul! #cheat”

‘Dries Mertens LIVE!’ continues as the Belgium No.7 rolls around on the deck for an age after a foul by Glen Johnson. This sounds like I’m not a fan of Mertens but...well, he’s being a nuisance. Marouane Fellaini receives the ball from the resulting free kick inside a packed England penalty area, but is soon crowded out.

That pesky Dries Mertens is in the thick of the action again - for the right reasons this time - by nudging the ball to his right to find Axel Witsel in space around 25 yards out. The Belgium midfielder lets fly with a fierce strike but it sails a few yards over.

More from Jimmy-G at Wem-ber-ley: “Not much going on at ground level, but up in the stands fans are occupying themselves by launching paper aeroplanes at the pitch. Come on people, this is a football match not a GCSE geography lesson.”

Amas Albert on Twitter: “England's football is boring. Roy Hodgson is bringing relegation football tactics!”
We're gonna win the Euros...! Oh.

17:35 BST

02/06/2012

James Goldman on further trouble for Gary Cahill: “Whammo. Gary Cahill’s on the floor following a meaty collision with Joe Hart. The Chelsea defender, having been shoved in the general direction of his goalkeeper by Mertens, looks dazed and confused. Hodgson takes no chances and makes an instant change with Joleon Lescott entering the fray. More injury woe.”

17:32 BST

02/06/2012

Dries Mertens, you nasty, nasty man! Fresh from fouling Ashley Cole and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, the Belgium midfielder - looking to latch onto the ball between Gary Cahill and Joe Hart - pushes the Chelsea centre-back into the goalkeeper to cause a collision between the two! He then gets on the end of the loose ball and strokes it over the line after the referee has blown for a free kick. Yellow card for Mertens - and rightly so. Cahill looks in trouble...

17:30 BST

02/06/2012

Ox - again! He’s getting plenty of chances early on today, that’s for sure. Danny Welbeck does well to beat the offside trap down the left, keep the ball in play and lay it back to the onrushing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain 20 yards out. Again, the England youngster goes for goal first time, firing a few yards over on this occasion.

17:28 BST

02/06/2012

More from James Goldman Stats at Wembley: “Bright start from Oxlade-Chamberlain, who skipped past the challenge of Gillet with his first touch, but we’ll have to wait until we crank the hype-ometer into overdrive after the Arsenal man makes a horrible mess of a presentable opportunity following James Milner’s cut back.”

17:26 BST

02/06/2012

BANNED: People asking us how Belgium did not qualify for Euro 2012. Please, please - no more!

17:24 BST

02/06/2012

Ox again! Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, arriving in plenty of space just inside the Belgium area, receives a bobbling cross from James Milner. The England starlet opts to go for goal first time but gets it all wrong by slipping over and miscuing well wide. Chin up, Ox, lad.

17:22 BST

02/06/2012

Dries Mertens’ main aim of today is to whack every England player in sight. FACT! It’s not really - we hope - but his next victim is Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who he clatters to ground after a promising run down the left from the youngster. Steven Gerrard joins the wars moments later by getting knocked to the deck by Moussa Dembele, but it doesn’t look intentional.

17:21 BST

02/06/2012

James Goldman reports from Wembley: “Phew. Ashley Cole appears to be moving freely after he took a knock on the knee following an early collision with Dries Mertens. An injury to the Chelsea man is just about the last thing Roy Hodgson needs right now with his England side already having a ‘patched up’ feeling about it.”
