The Manchester United manager tells Sky Sports: “My thinking behind it is to beat the opponent we play. With De Gea in goal we play in the back with four defenders... If I want to play with five defenders I can’t because they are injured. Smalling is coming back but is not fit enough to play this weekend and Jones is injured and cannot play.”
Over in Serie A, it’s now 6-0 to Inter at home to Sassuolo, with Maurco Icardi netting a hat-trick, and the visitors have been reduced to 10 men. No shocks there, then, but there is elsewhere in Serie A - Chievo lead away to Napoli. Follow play-by-play updates below.

Three-five-WHO? Suggestions buzzing around The Twittersphere that it could well be a diamond formation for Manchester United today. Here is how they may line up: De Gea; Rafael, Evans, Blackett, Rojo; Blind; Herrera, Di Maria; Mata; Rooney, Van Persie.
It’s all over in the Championship. A second-half goal apiece and it ends 1-1 between Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest and Derby. Jake Buxton was sent off late on for the visitors, while two players were forced off injured for the hosts.
Swansea 1-2, Sunderland 1-1, MK Dons 0-4, Burnley 0-0. Must-win game?

Paul Macdonald reports: “New arrival Radamel Falcao will have to wait a little longer to make his Manchester United debut, with Louis van Gaal naming him among the substitutes for today's clash with QPR. Two debutants do feature, however, in the form of Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind, while Angel Di Maria makes his home bow. Luke Shaw is also among those on the bench as United edge ever closer to a fully-fit squad. Van Gaal will know that's when his team will be truly judged, for better or worse.”
As for Qeens Park Rogers, they've gone for the funky graphic approach to naming their team and hand a debut to new signing Sandro in the centre of midfield. Rio Ferdinand returns to Old Trafford for the first time since leaving in the summer. Joey Barton is injured.
Subs: Lindegaard, Shaw, Fletcher, Januzaj, Valencia, A Pereira, Falcao.
Manchester United XI: De Gea, Rafael, Evans, Rojo, Blackett, Blind, Herrera, Mata, Di Maria, Rooney, Van Persie.
GOAL! It's all square in the Championship again between Nottingham Forest and Derby as Richard Keogh follows up his header against the crossbar to help scramble the ball home for the equaliser. The area was so packed that it could well go down as a goal for Leon Best or Ryan Shotton. Dubious goals committee, do your stuff...

Blimey. Inter don’t mess about. It’s not even half-time in Serie A but they’re already 3-0 ahead at home to Sassuolo. Mauro Icardi has grabbed two of the goals, with Mateo Kovacic scoring the other. Inter won the away fixture 7-0 last season...

Manchester United spent over £200 million on new players in 2014, but could that be topped in 2015? The Sunday Express claims today that Cristiano Ronaldo is desperate to leave Real Madrid and would consider a return to United or a move to Manchester City, while the Mail on Sunday reckons he would command wages of... wait for it... £500,000-a-week! Yikes.
Transfer Talk: Ronaldo wants Premier League return
He cost a club-record fee back in January, but could Juan Mata already be on the move? According to the Sunday People, Manchester United will offer the Spaniard to Roma to help push through a January deal for long-term midfield target Kevin Strootman.
Transfer Talk: Man Utd to offer Mata to Roma
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: "We've spoken about targets. A club like Manchester United has to set targets and I think within the top three is logical... We shall see who plays on Sunday. I'm a coach who always decides based on what I have observed. We've done very well in the transfer market. That's a big plus, and we have to produce results, starting against QPR."
And moving over to France, two Premier League players have scored quickfire goals to put Lille 2-0 up against Nantes early in the second half in Ligue 1. Divock Origi, on loan from Liverpool, and Marcos Lopes, on loan from Manchester City, scored the goals. Aaaand back to Serie A, it’s already 1-0 to Inter against Sassuolo thanks to Mauro Icardi.
