FLOP OF THE WEEKEND: PART TWO

Alan Pardew. The Newcastle boss has been in charge for nearly four years and is the second longest-serving manager in the Premier League but is now facing the axe after a heavy 4-0 defeat to Southampton. Hull boss Steve Bruce is favourite to replace him.

FLOP OF THE WEEKEND

His inclusion saw him trend on Twitter before the game had even started and he was hauled off at half-time following a poor first-half performance. The award for Flop of the Weekend goes to... QPR captain Clint Hill.

PLAYER OF THE WEEKEND

Angel Di Maria had a fantastic Old Trafford debut today, but this one has to go to Diego Costa. The Chelsea striker overcame a hamstring injury, for a change, to start and score a hat-trick in a 4-2 win over Swansea. That's a Player of the Month award and seven goals already for the striker. Quite a start.

VAN GAAL RECAP

He said: “I said to the players 'we have to make a new start, today'. We start now. I now have my selection, 27 players. These will be our players for the season. We made four goals, and in spite of our loss against Swansea and the draws [against Sunderland and Burnley], we were the better team but we failed to make goals. Today we made goals and created chances. I’m very happy with the goals and in the second half we had a lot of chances."

FALCAO WATCH

He started the day by calling this afternoon's opponents Qeens Park Rogers on Twitter, and ends it having received a tremendous ovation on his Manchester United debut. The Colombian may not have played as long as we liked, but here's how our player rater felt he fared: "On for his debut with 20 minutes to go, and will take him a bit of time to get up to the speed of the Premier League."

DI MARIA KICKSTARTS VAN GAAL ERA

One word to sum up that Manchester United performance: SWAGGER. The flair, pace and attacking quality on show today was missing at Old Trafford last season but it’s all change now following the arrival of Angel Di Maria. He scored once and registered an assist to put in a man-of-the-match display. Here's how Goal’s Paul Macdonald rated United's performance...

VAN GAAL REACTION - WHICH LANGUAGE DO PLAYERS SPEAK?

And finally: “All the players are learning English. I can speak Spanish so sometimes it’s better to communicate sometimes in Spanish, but they will learn within a year they will learn to speak English.”

VAN GAAL REACTION - NEW ERA AND FORMATION

He adds: “I said to the players ‘we have to make a new start, today’. We start now. I now have my selection, 27 players. I could hardly play with five defenders because Smalling and Jones were injured. I would have to have played a left-footed player on the right of defence. I was forced to play four defenders, but I know that the quality of the players allowed me to play this way.”

VAN GAAL REACTION - TITLE CHALLENGE

More from LVG: “The most important thing is the trajectory. We are building a process and we have to play in a certain style and we have to improve and at the end, I hope to be manager of the champions of the Premier League, if not this year, or next year, but I want to give the title to the fans.”

VAN GAAL REACTION - ON ATTACKING SYSTEM

Asked if this is the most attacking team he has worked with, Louis van Gaal tells reporters: “I have worked for 25 years and all my teams have scored the most in the league. I hope at the end of this league we will also score the most. But it is not our goal. Our purpose is to be in the first three, because we have to qualify for the Champions League.”

PREMIER LEAGUE TABLE

It doesn’t reeeaaally matter at this stage, but it kind of does. A first win under Louis van Gaal moves Manchester United into the top half for the first time this season. They now sit ninth in the table and two points off a Champions League place. QPR? Well, they’re down to 16th and, with -8, have the worst goal difference in the Premier League.
