THE PAIN IN SPAIN

Spain will tonight have to watch on as they finally lose thier title as world champions, but that hasn't stopped one or two fo them having their say ahead of the final between Germany and Argentina.

Napoli boss Rafa Benitez believes there is no clear favourite ahead of this evening's encounter in the Maracana, but fellow countrymen Raul can only see one outcome.

"Normally, World Cup finals do not have clear favourites," the 37-year-old wrote in his column for the Times of India.

"This tradition has been broken in Brazil. Germany are the team to watch after their demolition of the hosts in the semi-final.

JAN A WANTED MAN

We brought you news this morning in Transfer Talk that Barcelona could be interested in a move for Tottenham's Jan Vertonghen, and now the player's agent has added fuel to the fire.

Mustapha Nakhli has come out to say that there are 'several teams' interested in the Belgium international, but refused to confirm if one of them was indeed the Catalan giants.

CARTOON OF THE DAY

The Dutch may be on their way home but they've certainly done themselves proud after an unprecidented third-place finish in Brazil.

Louis van Gaal is now off to manage Manchester United, and will no doubt be looking for some of Dutch squad to join him at Old Trafford.

But could he possibly tempt Arjen Robben to switch the Bundesliga for the Premier League?

WORLD CUP PREDICTIONS

Everyone is giving their thoughts ahead of the World Cup final it would seem, and even Christ himself is getting involved!

Christ the Redeemer, in Rio, was lit up in the colours of Germany after a worldwide social media vote. Argentine Pope Francis may just have something to say about that.

WORLD CUP COUNTDOWN

T-MINUS FIVE HOURS UNTIL KICK OFF IN RIO!

We are getting closer to game time at the Maracana and footballers past and present are continuing to have their say ahead of Argentina - Germany.

World Cup winner Ossie Ardiles believes that an 'in prime' Lionel Messi is essential to an Argentine victory but has dismissed any psychological edge the Europeans might have after getting the better of the South Americans in the last two tournaments.

"As far as Argentina are concerned, once again all eyes will be on Messi," the 61-year-old worite in his column for the Times of India.

The paper reports that Everton have matched Swansea's £4 million bid for the Ferencvaros youngster, while West Ham are also monitoring the situation.

PAULINHO TO JUVE?

A few midfielders have been linked with a move away from Juventus this summer, so it only seems sensible that they're looking into replacements.

With Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal both strongly linked with moves to England, the Sunday Telegraph reckons Tottenham's Paulinho could be moving in the opposite direction, with a £20 million bid being prepared for the Brazilian.

VALENCIA NEARS HAMMERS MOVE

If the World Cup can guarantee anything apart from England heartbreak, it's unproven stars making their way to the Premier League.

And the first beneficiary of this year's tournament looks to be Ecuador's Enner Valencia, who is on his way to London to hold talks with West Ham, Goal understands.

The 25-year-old could be set to become the most expensive player to leave the Mexican league, with a price of £12 million thought to have been set by Pachuca.

EAGLES TO RAID BLUEBIRDS?

Cardiff City could be set to lose striker Fraizer Campbell as Crystal Palace have shown interest in the former Manchester United striker.

Leicester City met the £600,000 release clause of the 26-year-old earlier in the summer but failed to agree terms and now Tony Pulis is looking to bring Campbell to London, according to the Metro.

SPECIAL PRAISE FROM SPECIAL ONE

They could (hopefully) be at each others throats in a few months time, but for now, Jose Mourinho is lavishing new Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal with praise.

The Chelsea boss reckons the Netherlands boss has done the best job of any coach at this year's World Cup, given the resources he came with.

"If I had to choose one because I think he did a fantastic job... I would choose Louis van Gaal," the Special One told Yahoo.

NO HAMMERS INJURY WORRIES

The pre-season schedules have got underway for a host of Premier League sides, including West Ham.

The Hammers drew 2-2 with League Two Stevenage on Saturday without trio Andy Carroll, Carlton Cole and Mauro Zarate, but assistant Neil McDonald insists there were no injury concerns.

"We've had them in pre-season and they've been training but they just had little knocks or tightness, so we didn't want to take a chance," he said.

MAGPIES SWOOP FOR TRIO

Big News for Newcastle fans. Goal understands that the club are on the verge of not one, not two, but THREE new signings.

Montpellier have confirmed that they have reached an agreement with the St James' Park outfit for the sale of Remy Cabella, but it's thought that Alan Pardew could also be welcoming Netherlands' World Cup star Daryl Janmaat and Monaco's Emmanuel Riviere ahead of their tour of New Zealand.

SUSO PREPARED FOR ANFIELD FIGHT

Spanish midfielder Suso has said he is ready to stay at Liverpool this season and fight for a first team spot.

The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at La Liga outfit Almeria but doesn't want to be shipped out for another campaign.

"If I fight for my place, I do my best every day in training and when I have the chance to ocme on or start a game, if I do well, O could have chances to play a lot of minutes for the first team," Suso told the club's Official website.

SCOCCO NEARS SUNDERLAND EXIT

Another player looking for a swift North East exit is Nacho Scocco. The Argentine was brought in last January to help Sunderland avoid relegation but the striker did little to help the Black Cats' cause following his move from Internacional.

The 29-year-old started his career with Newell's Old Boys and the Argentine club have launched a second bid to take Scocco back to South America, according to the Evening Chronicle.

YANGA-MBIWA BACK TO FRANCE?

With one Frenchman set to arrive on Tyneside this week, it looks as though another could be heading in the opposite direction.

Remy Cabella looks set to complete his switch to Newcastle United this week but former Montpellier team-mate Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa could be heading for the exit, according to the Evening Chronicle, as St Etienne are believed to be in talks for the 25-year-old.
