thumbnail Hello,

One of the most underrated - yet highly entertaining - tournaments kicks off Saturday when The African Cup of Nations opens up in South Africa starting with Group A.

The African Cup of Nations is by far one of the most exciting tournaments in world football.  This year, South Africa will play host, the first time since 1996 when it defeated Tunisia 2-0 to win its only title to date.

As hosts, Bafana Bafana are slated at odds of 10.00 to win the whole thing and are favoured to win the group at 1.80.

However, they haven't made it to at least the semi-finals in the last six Cups and didn't even qualify for the previous competition after a brutal interpretation of the rules by team management saw the team let up during its final qualifying match. Adding to that, their inability to deliver so far in their 2014 World Cup Qualifying campaign in which they sit third behind Ethiopia and the Central African Republic has a lot of bettors looking at other team options.

To win the opening match they are listed at 1.57, but South Africa will need to find the back of the net, a severe problem that has plagued the team over the last two years. They may have a break in that their first game is against a squad many people are already writing off in Cape Verde, a small group of Islands just west of Dakar. Cape Verde will be playing for the first time in this competition and is surprisngly ranked 70th in the world, wedged between Scotland and Trinidad.

To win the competition, Cape Verde is paying a large 67.00, while its odds to win the group (which also features Angola and Morocco) are at 15.00. For this particular match, however, the visitors are paying out 6.00 even to pull off what most would consider a shocker.

Though it may seem nuts to bet against the home side, consider that the debutant islanders recently drew Nigeria, lost only 1-0 to Ghana, after having eliminated Cameroon in qualifying to reach the tournament. They certainly have proved to be formidable opposition against the continent's heavyweights. The draw bet can be taken at 3.60.

Here is the list of odds for the outright winner in the African Cup of Nations over at Uwin.com. And remember that the tournament is in the same time zone as Europe so you can bet live on these matches throughout the competition through your mobile, laptop, or tablet.
