The Leon defender thinks Mexico has a difficult World Cup group, and says the Real Sociedad man could help El Tri in Brazil.
Talking to Spanish outlet Marca, the 34-year-old said he gets on well with Vela, without being a close friend, and that the forward would give El Tri a boost.
“He’s a great player, he’s doing things well in Real Sociedad and he’s at a good level,” said Marquez. “He’s someone that could help us.”
Marquez added that the Europe-based Mexicans should definitely be considered and that El Tri has been handed a tough draw alongside Brazil, Cameroon and Croatia.
“It’s a complicated group but if we want to make history we have to win,” Marquez said. “We have to change the Mexican mentality.”
Continued the former Barcelona player: “I believe the youth national teams have demonstrated that we can play and win against anyone. It’s time Mexico made a small step forward.”
Marquez blamed poor decision-making for El Tri’s shoddy qualifying and lamented the firing of Victor Manuel Vucetich after just two games in charge, but added that introducing Miguel Herrera, his system and the America players got the job done.
