thumbnail Hello,

The Leon midfielder had grown into a key player for Mexico, but Miguel Herrera's side will have to do without him at the World Cup.

Mexico’s World Cup hopes were dealt a blow when Luis Montes was stretchered off with a broken right tibia and fibula against Ecuador. The Mexican federation's media officials confirmed Montes was taken to Memorial Hospital in Arlington, Texas.

Rafa Marquez, the captain, was also taken to the hospital during the match with what the FMF called a strong hit to his right foot causing the center back discomfort. Despite media reports indicating he may have fractured a toe, Marquez himself posted a picture on Instagram following the game saying the toe was not broken.

Montes, the Leon midfielder scored 33 minutes into the game, but just two minutes later, his World Cup dream was ended after a clash with Ecuador midfielder Segundo Castillo.

Castillo was also taken to the hospital for evaluation on a right knee injury.

Montes, 28, was expected to be a key player for El Tri in Brazil. He has 12 caps and three goals with the Mexico national team.
