The veteran pair have yet to play for the El Tri coach since he took over, but Miguel Herrera says it wouldn't be a shock if they made a return to the fold.Neither Carlos Salcido nor Gerardo Torrado has featured in any of Mexico coach Miguel Herrera’s squads since he took charge last November, but the former America manager isn’t ruling either out of the World Cup.
“They are important names that I haven’t called in to the national team, but it wouldn’t be a surprise because they are players with great ability,” said Herrera on Tuesday in quotes published in Record.
Both Salcido and Torrado were regulars under former coach Jose Manuel de la Torre and have over 100 caps each, but fell out of favor when Herrera came in.
The Mexico coach went on to say a real surprise would be a less experienced player putting together a streak of four or five games and then getting called into the squad for Brazil.
Herrera also talked in the same piece about 24-year-old Giovani Dos Santos, who came back from injury for Villarreal a week ago.
“We know the quality that Giovani has,” said Herrera, lamenting the fact he was injury for the friendly against the United States in early April. “He’s (in the same position) as all the 30 that we have in our head,” continued Herrera, seeming to hint that Dos Santos’ place at Brazil is not secure.
Herrera has stated he will name the 23 players to take to Brazil on May 9, despite the FIFA deadline being June 2.
